Microsoft's January '06 update is now available through Xbox Live

Microsoft has released the much hyped January 2006 update for the Xbox 360. The mandatory update will install when you sign on to Xbox Live. There doesn't appear to be anything to get excited about, but here's the list from Microsoft on what's included with the update:

  • Improvements to the Xbox Guide.
  • Option to retain your saved games when you delete a profile.
  • Increased accuracy of "last time played."
  • Network configuration improvements for Xbox Live® members in the Netherlands.
  • More detailed messaging for unreadable disk or region errors.

if they waited for HD-DVD.. they probably wouldn't have made the holiday rush. Heating issues.. well.. you would have thought they learned something from the xbox release.....

Too bad that the 360 doesn't have any heat problems. Mine has been crammed in my entertainment center for months and works without a hitch. Everyboy thinks Microsoft is the only one who releases a consumer product that ships with a couple of faulty units. Remember when the PSP launched and everyone and their mother were complaining about the large number of dead pixels on the display and Sony refused to offer anyone a replacement for it?

No, I don´t think any release of a product is flawless :)
But the XBox360 were just being released too soon...

There should be no need for this Upgrade for the cooling system around, if there wasn´t something about it. And no, also ´BOXes´ not cramped in a shelf, can have a heat issue.

Try open the BOX half an hour into heavy gaming, and feel that frying iron - not good for chips to get that hot.
I don´t think the Cooling system is well designed in the 360 - for the price given, maybe, but for a tiny amont it could have been so much better.

Also, having worked with electronics for more than 25 years, teached me that it is very easy to make a product degrade automatically without any obvious defects.
By purpose design a circuit to electrically be ´very close´ to the electrically limits, stressing the components - there You go - shorter lifetime - build in!! I´m talking consumer products here.

ALSO XBox, 360, PS and whatever is out there.

I think that most of the overheating issues are caused by people stuffing it into a tight space without proper ventilation, as if it were a vcr or dvd player. I give my 360 plenty of space and have had no hardware issues whatsoever. Now software issues are something entirely different, as they have a LOT of work to do in that area.

Don't forget to purge the dust and sticky gunk from the internal GPU and CPU heatsinks every six months. With the dual-fans pulling lots of air, the high-density CPU heat-sink should clog up completely in about 9 months in a typical home environment. Oops, I forgot - can't get at the heatsinks for a thorough spring-clean without breaking seals and voiding warranty. Ah, well, all is not lost - do nothing and when the CPU or GPU overheats and goes flaky or fails completely, get a brand-new Xbox360 replacement under your extended warranty . Those heatsinks will also do a good job of frying the DVD drive too. Very clever hardware design jamming them both right up against the DVD housing. Various Xbox360 owners have been reporting discolored discs after prolonged continuous use of the console.... Hopefully there are not too many capacitors in that area of the DVD drive electronics. Otherwise, don't worry....be happy! No doubt all of these hot-spot issues will be addressed by a physical redesign and/or moving the CPU and GPU to cooler 65nm or 45nm processes mid-2007 ---probably synchronous with the announcement of the Xbox720 with an on-board hard-disk and the winner of the HD-DVD/Blu-Ray DVD-wars -- 100% backward-compatible with the discontinued Xbox360, of course.

HD-DVD players arent on the market... it still wouldnt have shipped TODAY if they waited for that.

I get about as many heating problems with the 360 as i got with the original Xbox.... aka, dont stick it in your AV cabinet with the door closed sitting on its power brick and youll be fine.

Actually, my PS1 had far more overheating problems. Oh how i remember flipping that badboy. :D

The hell with all of that, they can't even get enough units as it is. MS f'ed this launch up. Any headstart they got on Sony is being wasted.

Oh my god now consoles are getting patches and updates...
This is bad, really bad. Next thing you know they will sell us antivirus and antispyware software to keep the darn thing running properly.

well all the new xbox 360 rev have no heating issue since they changed teh cooling system. my xbox 360 had no heating issues.

Heaven forbid they give you a free update that improves things or adds useful new features. Next thing you know they'll be adding more games to their Xbox compatibility list. My. God. What have we done?!??

Honestly, all I see is a bunch of uninformed comments being made by a majority of people who obviously do not have an Xbox 360. I have had no problems whatsoever with this system, and everyone I know who has one has no complaints either. Unless of course you consider "amazing graphics," "awesome games," or "xbox live rocks" to be complaints in some manner.

So the system shipped without HD-DVD support. Big deal. It's also less expensive and sooner available because of this. I personally would rather be playing the games now than waiting for a format that is not going to be available to the masses for quite some time.

No system could be release without having it's share of growing pains, so I fail to see why everyone is acting like the 360 is the only system that has had some problems. Even if the percentage is higher than Microsoft claims, it still is well within the expected amount for a new console. As was mentioned earlier, there was the dead pixel fiasco with the PSP that I'm sure was much more widespread than the couple of overheating 360's. I know a couple of people with PS2's that went through a few before getting one that was solid.

Keep in mind that you rarely ever hear the good with the bad. My recommendation for people who are concerned about purchasing an Xbox 360 is to ignore the majority of the bad comments you're hearing. Keep an eye on it for a couple more months if need be, but you can be sure that you will be getting a excellent console for the money.

But nobody want´s a machine that looks like something from ´83, ..gets ´strange´ sometimes - AND feels like a(nother) updateable apperatus from MS....just like?.....Windows!!

Why should I get one more piece of flawfull software from a company that thinks more about money than wellwritten software (in case 360 also hardware)...

And until some more exiting game concepts than the usual "I´m a soldier on an important(!) mission!!"...

Not this time around for me.
