Microsoft has signed another licensing deal -- totaling six in the past year

Microsoft announced it has agreed to a cross-licensing deal with LG Electronics Inc.  The agreement between the two companies covers hardware and software intellectual property, including the Linux operating system.  It took the two companies more than four years to finalize the deal, which began in 2003.

The deal will allow LG Electronics to have access to Microsoft patents which can be used in computer and home appliance products.  Microsoft will have access to LG patents that deal with LG computer-related products.

"We believe that the license agreement with Microsoft provides appropriate recognition of the value of LG's computer system-related patents, which includes patents directed to computer architecture utilized in game consoles and other products," said Jeong Hwan Lee, LG's executive vice president of intellectual property.

Analysts expect LG to be able to better compete with companies such as Samsung in the next-generation mobile devices market.

"This agreement is another example of how Microsoft is continuing to build bridges with others in the industry through intellectual property licensing," said Horacio Gutierrez, vice president of Microsoft Intellectual Property and Licensing.

Both companies chose not to disclose financial terms of the deal.

Some analysts and critics accuse Microsoft of a "de facto advance for Redmond's unproven claims to Linux-related intellectual property."  In November, Microsoft's Steve Ballmer made a claim on Linux code -- then Novell and Microsoft signed a deal to work together.  More recently, Microsoft announced it wants royalties from Linux and other open source technology.

Microsoft has agreed to similar deals with Novell, NEC, Samsung Electronics, Seiko Epson, Nortel Networks and Fuji Xerox.

Probably a custom build used in their devices, yes.

Yeah, I'd say there's a good chance. I don't have experience with LG products, but I noticed my Sony TV came with a notice mentioning the open source software they used. It's using Linux and BusyBox.

I'm confused. So basically microsoft is signing deals with companies over the alleged patent infringements linux violates in regard to the windows os? Therefore *IF* it is found that linux violates these patents, the companies who signed deals with microsoft are fine? Sounds like extortion to me.

Its a protection racket.

MS is trying to skimp around GPL as version 3 is being readied.

They've even funded a "study" (How nice of them!)

Zune based phone in the works?

I would think that LG may be looking at releasing a Zune based phone (the zPhone?). With the iPhone due out soon we might see someone, like Verizon looking to LG (a major phone supplier for Verizon) to provide an iPhone killer.

1) That Balmer pic is just too funny. He takes the role of 'front-face' of MS quite literally.

2) I think MS is just working on giving companies a good alternative to OSS by setting these patents agreements. Companies won't have to fear getting sued and can use Microsoft as software(framework) provider for their appliances. If it goes well it will pay good in the mid/long term future as more appliances use MS' technology.

Does this remind anyone of SCO ?

SCO tried to extort money because of alleged IP in fairly similar fashion.

Does it seem to you that MS is faring better in making agreements than SCO ?

SCO's credibility was not so good. MS is likely more credible and definitely more formidable so that might explain the cooperation ?
