Microsoft releases Vista Build 5728 to testers

Microsoft today released a new build of Windows Vista to beta testers. Build 5728 comes just three weeks after Microsoft released Vista RC1 (Build 5600) to testers. The download weighs in at 2,622.25 MB for the x86 build and 3,628.64 MB for the x64 build. Beta testers can grab Build 5728 from Microsoft Connect.

According to a blog post last month over at the Windows Vista Team Blog, the 57xx builds are reserved for Release-to-Manufacturing (RTM).

So while things are going swimmingly for Microsoft’s US release of Window Vista, the company still has some issues to resolve in Europe. The European Union is breathing down Microsoft’s neck while Adobe and Symantec aren’t too far behind.

Or anyone else can get it from http://download.windowsvista.com/dl/preview/rc1/en...

That link you provided, for some reason, downloaded a corrupt ISO.

For those wanting to try out build 5728 use this:

http://download.windowsvista.com/preview/rc1/en/do...

After downloading it (it's about 2.56GB) run an MD5 check to see if it matches MSFT's own MD5 which is:

Odd, because that link is exactly the same as the direct download link on the page you link to.

I've successfully installed Vista from the link I provided.

No, the download from the OP's link works fine. I agree YOU may have gotten a bad download, but mine downloaded fine.

I ran MD5 on my download and got:

79cbef523e8afa557a25688349dc8dac

Same as you.

You are correct. The original link is fine. I just tried it again and it works.

For some reason the first night I d/l it the MD5 check failed. Also it was 2.4something rather than 2.56Gb.

Apologies to the OP.

On a brighter note, build 5728 is great. I did an upgrade install from XP SP2 (it took 2.5hrs to complete) and everything seems to work except for AVG Free 7.1 and Nero. Even iTunes 7 works well in 5728.

Strange that MSFT's own intellipoint software isn't compatible still (meaning the mouse just gets a generic vista driver - losing a lot of functionality) and a couple of hiccups in IE7 with a couple of sites.

Apart from that, this build is leaps ahead of Beta 2 which was almost unusable.

Nero's the show stopper for me. Until I can get Nero to work, I can't upgrade my main home PC to Vista. I can dual boot I suppose, but at that point it's just a curiosity. I use Nero all the time, and have no reasonable alternative.

I use mostly the Burning ROM part of Nero 7 but it's still too bad Nero isn't supported in Vista yet. Also, after a few days now with 5728, more bugs are starting to show their ugly face.

One is the Vista sound drivers seem to deactivate every time the PC is put in Sleep mode. I get no sound after coming out of Sleep mode until I reboot (this issue I also had in Beta 2 and I sent in a bug report on - I guess it never got fixed). Another is some abnormalities associated with IE7 (vista edition - my IE7 RC1 in XP didn't have those issues I'm having now).

But mostly, even though Vista RC1 5728 is better, way better, performance wise than previous Vista builds, it's still no match for XP in responsiveness and overall performance. And that's why I have to go back to XP for now, but not before I submit as much feedback and bugs to MSFT.

If you want to use Nero in Vista check out Nero Lite. (http://hp38guser.freepgs.com/index.php/?page_id=14... It is a repackaged version of Nero 7.2.7.0 without a bunch of extra cr@p like Scout, the media center software, etc.

Also, if you want IntelliPoint or IntelliType in Vista click this link: http://neosmart.net/blog/archives/56.

Thanks for the tip on Nero Lite. However it doesn't include Recode which is one of my must-have apps.

I don't see anything on the page that says Nero Lite will install on Vista, but I presume you are saying you know it will?

Oh no, AVG Free 7.1 can't be used? Now that puts me off...any ideas of other good subsitutes that can be installed in Windows Vista?

While there is nothing wrong with the link provided by the OP, the link provided by ATC does allow you to use the Akamai download manager which I've found in the past is far more reliable at downloading Vista ISO's. I had no problem getting a valid ISO from the original link, but that may explain ATC's corrupt download.

People should note also this info from that page (which might better have been included in DT's original article):

quote:
This build (5728) has a number of improvements and updates from RC1, but has not been put through the same internal testing process as RC1 and therefore may be unstable in certain installations. We are making this release available for a limited time only (and only by download) in order to get broad distribution and testing in a variety of PC configurations. Please note: This build may not have the same level of support or servicing via Windows Update, and you may not be able to upgrade to the final version of Windows Vista.

Based on that, I'm not sure whether to use 5728 or continue with RC1... newer isn't always better is it?

What about DirectX 10?

Will DirectX 10 be released at the same time?

If I remember correctly, DX10 will be Vista only. Forever Vista only. Not porting DX10 over to XP. What I heard at least?

I would say as of right now Direct X10 will probably in a patch to introduced later, just the like the new file system will be. I don't know why microsoft wants to release this OS to Buisnesses first and sell it to everyone in january, I would just wait until January all together and know that i have a good product then release and let all the bug go flying. So hopefully in january there may even be a service pack for it.

The new file system will not be released. Period. Months ago Microsoft announced it would not release WinFS, and that it "may" be used for SQL Server at some point.

DirectX 10 has been part of windows vista for quite some time.

DirectX 10 will not be ported to windows XP

There are DX10 files on Vista, but whether or not they actually work is debatable. And just because they're there now, doesn't mean they will be when the OS releases. Vista itself doesn't use DX10. All the Aero stuff runs on DX9. So for them to launch Vista, they don't need DX10.

There is no directX 10 hardware out. So how in the world could anything written for DX 10 work properly without the compatible hardware. Direct x 10 call will be dumbed or not used when the hardware isn't capable.

I think DX10 relies quite a bit on the new graphics driver model that Vista has, which means a port to XP would require porting a significant chunk of Vista and it's drivers. That isn't going to happen.

ok, now a real comment/question
By johnsonx on 9/22/2006 3:34:44 PM , Rating: 1
If 5700 builds are RTM (like a RC but they REALLY mean it now?), does that mean that everything in the ISO is final, or does that just mean the core code is final but bundled software, drivers, and etc. will still evolve before it goes gold?

Also if Microsoft is already at an RTM build, is there any indication they may change course and release OEM and Retail before January? Or are they right on schedule and 3-4 months is simply how long it takes from to get to retail?
