Now the entire line has received a $100 price cut

Microsoft Corp.'s (MSFT) 12-inch Surface Pro 3 hybrid laptop-cum-tablet is getting cheaper -- $100 cheaper, to be precise.

The third-gen Surface Pro comes in five SKUs, which had previously ranged in price from from $799 USD to $1,949.  These tablets come with various flavors of dual-core Intel Corp. (INTC) Haswell processors ranging from a 1.5 GHz (no turbo) Core i3-4020Y to the 1.7 GHz (w/ 3.3 GHz turbo) Core i7-4650U.  They pack solid state drives ranging from 64 to 512 GB.

Two weeks ago Microsoft cut the price of the mid-range SKUs by $100.

Now it's completed that cut with $100 off the entry level (Core i3 + 64 GB SSD) and high end (Core i7 + 512 GB SSD) model.  And it's also sharing even more love, giving away a free protective sleeve worth $39.99 USD to all Surface Pro 3 buyers.

The price cuts mean you can get a Surface Pro 3 now for as little as $699.00 USD -- effectively 12.5% off the original price.  It's important to remember that while the Surface Pro 3 comes with its specialist stylus pen, the type cover which turns it into a laptop stand-in costs an additional $129.99 USD.

Microsoft offers a bundle, though with a 1-year subscription to Office 365 and a 2-year extended warranty, which offers somewhat of a price break to keyboard buyers of the base level model, trimming $279.97 USD off the price of these offerings, unbundled (at a price of $968 USD).

That takes the discounted price of the laptop-style Surface 3 Pro to $828.99 USD.  That may seem pretty steep, but with a unique form factor, super-portable form factor (11.50 x 7.93 x 0.36 in (292.10 x 201.42 x 9.14 mm); 1.76 lbs (0.79 kg)); and full Windows software support many are willing to pay a bit of a premium for the third-gen pro.

Microsoft is taking the device market very seriously, and making bold moves including its recent purchase of Israel's N-Trig, who makes the Surface Pro 3's stylus.  It's also committed to major ad campaigns to promote its house brand in recent months, including an ad deal with America's biggest money sports league, the NFL.

In Microsoft's Q2 FY2015 (calendar Q4 2014) the devices and services giant saw Surface revenue crack the $1B mark for the first ime, indicating sales of around 100,000 units.  Things should heat up at these lower prices, especially with Windows 10 looming ahead and with a 10 percent discount for students (which takes the entry price to $759.09 USD w/ keyboard or $629.10 USD w/out).

Even enterprise users are starting to join the Surface bandwagon.  Things are looking up for Microsoft & Co.
