A 1080p image of Solid Snake - hope that the game will run at that resolution! (Source: Konami)
Metal Gear Solid 4 is coming "early 2008"

For months, or even longer, gamers have been scrutinizing every single piece of information surrounding Metal Gear Solid 4 in hopes of shedding some light regarding its status as a PlayStation 3 exclusive. Just a few days ago, a Konami executive even made some rather curious comments following the PS3 price cut that would lead some to believe that MGS games would be heading to the Xbox 360 or Wii for the sake of recovering development costs.

At the Sony E3 press conference, it was explicitly stated that Metal Gear Solid 4 is a PlayStation 3 exclusive. There you have it, folks, official word from Jack Tretton of SCEA that it’s a PS3-only title. And if that’s not good enough, he was joined on-stage by Hideo Kojima, making it certain that it’s an exclusive.

Of course, it wouldn’t surprise me to see some sort of “Substance” follow-up to later appear on Xbox 360, which technically would be a separate game, leaving intact the Sony exclusivity detail.

While we’ve heard the same thing from the director before, Kojima said that this would be his last work on the Metal Gear Solid series. He said the same thing after MGS3, but I’m thankful that he’s decided to give it another go with the latest instalment.

If you have a PlayStation 3, check out the high-definition trailer on the PSN, or if not, then click here. A simultaneous worldwide launch of Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots is set for early 2008. Day one sale confirmed.

Things are finally starting to look good for Sony... $100 price cut with no competing cut from Microsoft followed by big name exclusives... Looks like over the next couple of months I might be getting a PS3.

MGS4 isn't enough reason for a PS3. Need to see more.

Let's see a Final Fantasy. That would make me buy a PS3.

List of PS3 exclusives which have caught my eye:

Final Fantasy XIII and XIII versus
LittleBigPlanet
Killzone 2
Getaway
Ratchet and Clank Future: Tools of Destruction
Uncharted: Drake's Fortune (development team of Jak and Daxter)
Gran Turismo 5 and 5 prologue
Metal Gear Solid 4
Zone of the Enders 3
Heavenly Sword
Lair
Wipeout HD
Warhawk
Haze
Home
Infamous
All NCsoft games (Guild Wars)

Interesting non-exclusives:

Devil May Cry 4
Assassin's Creed
Resident Evil 5
Soul Calibur IV
Unreal Tournament 3
Silent Hill 5
Grand Theft Auto IV
Turok
Guitar Hero III legends of Rock
Virtua Figher 5

What good exclusives does the XBox 360 have now? Gears of War, Halo 3, Mass Effect, and .... uh... :cough: Vampire Rain? Sad.

Here's a few on 360:

Banjo Kazooie 3
Forza 2
PGR4
Blue Dragon
Splinter Cell Conviction
Bioshock
Mass Effect
Marvel Universe Online
Lost Odyssey
GTA 4 exclusive content
Too Human
Alan Wake
whatever is on Xbox Live, I don't even know

Mass Effect, Bioshock, GTA4, and Halo 3 are the are the only ones I really care about of those right now. PC and Wii for the rest. I'd prefer having everything on the PC actually but what can you do.

(That's besides the multiplatform 360 games. To be honest I'm not a big MGS or Final Fantasy fan... they always have cheesy stories. I'm not going to get a PS3 until it is cheap in a couple years. I don't have a 360 but I'll get one this year probably.)

And how many of those are coming out on the PC as well? At least five, that I see.

PCs aren't consoles. For all you know MGS4 will come out on PC eventually. Resident Evil did. Anyway MS is ok with this because they know that the consoles don't really compete with the PC. Some people just prefer consoles so they don't care if it's on the PC.

Those PS3 exclusives might have.... "caught your eye".. but most of those look like they suck to me.

And most of the general populace.
I have no console but I'm buying the 360 when the 65nm shrink comes.

Media center streaming, Xbox Live, XBLA :P Sooo good.

By most of the general populace you mean you and America? Because most of those games have huge fan bases. Final Fantasy and Metal Gear Solids are two of the best selling games in the world. If Heavenly Sword is as good as God of War, then I will definitely pick it up. We can't expect Americans to know a good game cause all they mostly see is FPS.

P.s. I'm an American, but I'll take FF XIII over Halo 3 anyday.

Don't clump all of us American's into the Football and beer crowd. I am a Die hard FF fan and MGS fan as well. I love a good story line. Don't let the blue collar crowd fool you "most" of them (90%) can't stand FF series or anything with alot of story line, and Most of them can't afford a PS3 or 360 either because McDonalds or Wal-Mart doesn't pay them enough, or would actually rather go out and do something physical rather than spend their hard earned money on a game system. Let them eat sports and FPS. Leave the fine dining (RPG's and heavily story driven content) to us.

It really is three different crowds. The Party crowd (Wii), the action/sports crowd (360), and the complex story crowd (PS3). There may be some mixing and cross-over there, but the distinction is real. Else why would someone say FF sucks? The FF games have been primo quality all the way. If you think it "sucks" it has nothing to do with the quality or substance of the game, it is more likely not suited to your idea of entertainment. Millions of copies sold and almost none on the used games racks? Rave reviews by people who have actually bought the games and played them. That's like saying Titanic is a crappy movie (I think it is) but it sold freakin' how many tickets in the Box Office? Good lord it was marketed to the right demographic. Don't spend a fortune trying to sell a Porche to the guy with 4 kids. Your not going to make the sell. If he's going to buy one he will contact you, otherwise you are wasting your ad dollars.

And the argument that "the Xbox has a larger game selection" is getting really old. Go in a used games store and look at how many of them are on the shelves. Most of the "many" xbox 360 games that are out are crappy by 360 owners' standards. not worth keeping. so the shotgun effect creates more looser games than a few well placed bullets. That's why I am happy it is more difficult to make games on the PS3. I don't want the companies that crank games out weekly to be able to program on it. They never make anything worth owning. Most people who buy the square games (they make the FF series) still have the carts for their Nintendo platforms. We keep the games like books we cherish. Because maybe one day we will pull it down blow the dust off of them and re-live the story once again or try to find the other hidden secrets that someone hinted about.

You're just being pompous and stupid to say that RPGs are superior. I'll poop all over you and say that actual novels have stories waaaay better than the schlock you get in most popular videogames.

I like all videogame genres (well not so much sports or edutainment or whatever). The best ones have gameplay that is really surprises you. Final Fantasy was fun when I was 10 on the SNES but nothing's really different: FF is easy gaming. It's relaxing to just wander around from place to place following directions and fighting fairly easy battles. And the stories are ok but if all I want is a story I can read a good book.

In innovative RPGs like Fallout the game could play quite different and have different solutions depending on what kind of character you played: a real role-playing game that used the interactive format to the fullest. While the best FPS shooters are immersive and test your skill, while they can also tell compelling stories. To dismiss them all just shows ignorance.

Myself, I am an avid reader. (Jordan, Goodkind, Pratchett, Koontz, Crichton, to name a small few) Thanks for bringing novels into this as it is soo on topic.

That being said. The story lines of SOME fps games are good and I actually like playing them. Unfortunatly, I also like playing other games like RPGs where you get to explore the story from the inside while thinking and not so much reacting, so X360 is out.

Final Fantasy Tactics, Awesome Game, GREAT STORY!

Xenogears, WOW, even included elements from one of my favorite movies "Soylent Green"!

Bard's tale (The old ones I,II,III) Awesome games great value for their era.

Ultima series, great

Wizardry 6 was awesome.

Zork (the original text based games) great.

The Numbered Final fantasy games were really a great value, there was always something else to do (or do better) plus certain ones did have branching storylines (VI for example)

The Chrono Trigger series, on the first one I still haven't found all the possible endings.

Fallout, Awesome RPG, thanks for proving my point! What was yours again?

Mine was that there are 3 different camps of gamers (with some blurring at the edges) and people fall into their categories and like the games that match them best. You seem to like FPS and action/reaction gameplay style. It shows in your outward reaction to something you cherish. My slef I am more of a thinking gamer, an optimizer (Yes! I did it! Now, how can I do it better?) My wife likes the puzzle party games, with a slight leaning towards Story driven content (She plays WoW with me in bed on our laptops, *snicker* theres a pun in there somewhere I just know it!)

Don't fight it, accept it and it will make you a happier consumer.

You can't read that list and say the word suck.

Final Fantasy XIII alone is Sony's Fat Man.
Lair, GT5, and MGS4 are their Little Boys.
The 2008 market will become Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August 1945.

Ummm,

None of those games look fun. I mean.. PS3 has been reduced to never ending sequels that just get worse and worse and worse.

While The Halo series is getting progressively better.

I don't play either (Xbox360 or PS3). But I will tell you this. Sony will probably continue bleeding like there's no tomorrow and remain in a far distant third place (overall world wide).

Sony is pretty much dead.

It's funny how you say the PS3 has sequels when Halo 3 is...NO!!! IT CAN'T BE!!!...a sequel. And IMO I think all the Halos are just the same thing with a few "new" tricks throw in so people can't call them the same. And Sony is FAR from dead.

As in the past (MGS2), this game has great visuals, great cutscenes, probably no real "game" included. If they can package that in there, I'll be happy and buy.

Damn tricksters.

I'm sorry you bought a game you didn't enjoy. I hate when that happens, but i have enjoyed all of the metal gears i have played, when they were released that is. (going back to the nintendo metal gear after many years was just frustrating) I do find each game to be as different from each other in overall gameplay as some sports game, but i liked the system when it came out and still look forward to this one, as soon as i can save the money and actually afford the PS3.

Ha ha! It's like a movie with some interruptions for some gameplay. It might as well be interactive television the way they have a 15 minute cutscene every 5 minutes.

RE: come out for 360!
By FITCamaro on 7/13/2007 6:59:50 AM , Rating: 1
Konami themselves have said they will likely release the game on other consoles because of the poor sales of the PS3. Companies need to make money. And when you spend a few hundred million dollars to make a blockbuster title, its hard to make your money back when your target audience only consists of 1/4 to 1/3 of other consoles. Even if the PS3 doubles its install base between now and when MGS4 comes out, they're still going to be drastically under the install base of the 360.

So yes I expect this game to come out on the 360. It might be 6 months or so after the PS3 release, but I think it will. MGS2 was a PS2 exclusive only to later be released for the Xbox. Hopefully though they learned their lesson with that one and won't do as shitty a port with MGS4 as they did with MGS2.

What does it take to get an exclusive title?
By azrael201 on 7/12/2007 8:55:31 AM , Rating: 2
does Sony take less royalties? What kind of deal does Sony or any other console company offer that could be better for the publisher/developer?

By luigionlsd on 7/12/2007 9:41:07 AM , Rating: 2
Well, at the time the original MGS came out, PlayStation was the only plausible platform for it - Saturn was on its way out, and 64 wouldn't fit all those cutscenes. MGS sold very well on PSX, so it went onto PS2 for the sequel (again, the more plausible platform: GCN did not have DVD, and nobody knew if anyone would even buy the Xbox). Again, PS3 has the advantage with the Blu-ray Disc, and if anyone is going to be the first to use that successfully, it's Hideo Kojima. I bought a PS2 to play MGS2, and I bought a PS3 to play MGS4. I'm ready for this thing to release!

Old News
By Razgriz20 on 7/14/2007 2:58:29 AM , Rating: 2
Kojima has already said it last year that MGS4 is a PS3 exclusive not just because of the rights but because its not practically possible with the Xbox360's DVD medium. Those HD cutscenes needs a lot of space that the Blu-ray can offer. You don't want to play MGS4 on the Xbox360 using 10 discs do you? =P

Kojima Prefers the PS3
By deeznuts on 7/12/2007 1:40:21 PM , Rating: 2
Kojima, on many occasions, for some reason seems to prefer the PS3 hardware/capabilities. He's never expanded on why, he just does. Remember when he said the PS3 is like the theater, while 360 was like a DVD or something of that nature?

He's also said single layer blu-ray is not enough, and he will come close to filling up the dual layer. Don't know if this is true.

And lastly, the idiot head of Konami N.A. who said these things has repeatedly urged Kojima to bring it to the 360 (Kojima's an artist, this guy is an executive/bean counter so you can't fault him) and Kojima said "No way."

PS3 is a blueray player and this isn't a price drop it is phasing out the 60gb sku for $100 dollars until no more are in stock, to release an 80gb sku for the $599 price point which would probably cost them about $5 more to put in in hopes to spur sells of the 60gb sku that has been getting outsold by the 360 and wii since launch and give faith to 3rd party publishers that have chosen to use their platform in the past.
Maybe they will have some content next year but I will likely purchase a 360 this year because i'm more interested in the titles they have coming out. MSG 4 has good cut scenes which is all I really cared to play them for aside from the first one when the gameplay was kinda unique but it now sucks in my opinion, because fps give hideo kojima motion sickness I don't see why we have to suffer because of it.

Naruto
Enternal Sonata

Forza 2
PGR4
Halo 3
Halo Wars

Splinter Cell Conviction
Bioshock

There was another rpg I forget the name though.
