Mercedes-Benz Vision GLK BlueTec Hybrid Concept  (Source: Mercedes-Benz)

  (Source: Mercedes-Benz)
Mercedes' compact concept SUV gets 40 MPG from a diesel-electric powertrain

It looks like German automakers are really stepping up their efforts in the realm of diesel-electric hybrid vehicles. Over the past two weeks, DailyTech has brought you information on the Volkswagen Golf Hybrid which achieves an astonishing 69 MPG. BMW soon followed with its Vision EfficientDynamics hybrid concept vehicle (based on the X5 Sport Activity Vehicle) which achieves 36 MPG.

Mercedes-Benz is now stepping into the diesel-electric hybrid fray with the Vision GLK BlueTec Hybrid concept. As its name implies, the vehicle is based on the upcoming GLK compact SUV which will do battle with the BMW X3, Infiniti EX35 and the Audi Q5. The vehicle will slot under the mid-size ML SUV.

In concept form, the GLK BlueTec Hybrid the uses the mild hybrid system co-developed with BMW -- the hybrid components are also used in the BMW Vision EfficientDynamics concept. Whereas the BMW uses a 2.0-liter diesel as its primary source of power, the Vision GLK BlueTec Hybrid uses a 2.2-liter diesel which when combined with the electric engine/generator provides 224 HP.

Mercedes-Benz says that the Vision GLK BlueTec Hybrid is capable of accelerating to 62 MPH in 7.3 seconds and has a top speed of 134 MPH. The company lists CO2 emissions at 157 grams per kilometer while fuel economy is pegged at 40 MPG.

"With the refinement, driving pleasure, outstanding economy and effective environmental friendliness that is typical of our brand, the Vision GLK BlueTec Hybrid ideally represents our ideas on future model generations in the world of SUVs", says Mercedes-Benz’ Dr. Thomas Weber.

The Mercedes-Benz GLK and its Vision GLK BlueTec Hybrid counterpart likely won't win many beauty contests, but the GLK is sure to find its way into a number of homes when it arrives in the U.S. later this year. Expect pricing to come close to that of the BMW X3 3.0si which starts at $38,000 and the Infiniti EX35 which starts at $35,000.

Pricing for the diesel-electric hybrid version is sure to run well into the $40,000 range if it ever reaches U.S. soil.

I've gotta say, out of ALL auto manufacturers, Mercedes Benz has to make the absolute ugliest cars now. Even dwarfing Dodge (With their ugly retro challenger, a poor excuse for the real deal). I've seen many of those hideous Mercedes benz Minivans and I can't help but think how ugly they are...

Perhaps its the whole "look at me my body lines are an ARC" or what it is, but all their products look like crap. The only one that looks decent is their overpriced $500k Coupe (SLR), and so me of their SL AMG series.

I hate to say it, but I think you're in the minority on this one. I don't think I've ever seen a Mercedes I didn't like.

On top of that, I think the new Challenger looks great, though I have to say the new Avenger, with its "mini Challenger" design, is in poor taste. Especially when you consider the styling literally screams "We hope you'll now buy this poor-selling model because now it looks like our new design hit that we're milking as much as we can, because we're just that original and creative."

I generally prefer the look of Mercedes but I find this one ugly. Its like a gangsta mobile gone wrong or falling short and if I were to drive one Im getting I would be pulled over by the police thinking the same thing. Just doesn't look right for Mercedes.

Why is it that American manufacturers have to go "retro" to get people to buy their cars? They don't know how to design cars anymore? I've seen it with GM, Chrysler, AND Ford lately. Some of the more memorable monstrosities have been the HHR, PT Cruiser, Nitro...

What happens 10 years from now? Is the Dodge Intrepid or Chrysler Reliant gonna be the "in" retro thing?? Damn I hope not.

Well considering over 6000 people bought one on it's first day of sale (and this is the more-expensive SRT8 model) I'd say you were in the minority on the Challenger.

It may be a "mee-too" model for the Mustang but it's a good looking one. Almost makes me think about trading my Magnum, but something about a bad-ass station wagon just makes me grin.

Wow a whole 6000? I know that a lot of people wanted it and were waiting on it, and a lot of people liked it, so it doesn't surprise me.

How can a station wagon be bad ass? Isn't that similar to a sports car having an auto tranny? (I love it when those stretched out charger wagons try and race me, its always a laugh)

Technically only 4500 were going to be offered this year, they sold out so fast Chrysler upped it to 6000 and still sold them all.

Now I will agree that the problem with a unique car like this or the PT-cruiser, or even the Magnum is that there is a limited market and once the people that want them have them, things cool off quite a bit. The Challenger may be the same way but if they have some cheaper V6 versions like the Mustangs I think it will do as well as the Mustang.

Guess if you have to ask then it will never make sense to you. But the Magnum has a definite hot-rod vibe to it with the sloping roof line, wide stance and high beltline.

The difference between most "sports cars" is that this is a full size car than (in R/T trim) will run beside a 350Z to 60 but hold four people and/or a boatload of stuff, or even tow a boat. I've had it packed to the gills on a few ocasions with people and stuff and can still outrun most traffic.

Now if you're faster than an RT or even a SRT8 then good for you, but the speed is only half the equation with a Magnum or a Charger or 300. Lets see how well you do with 4 people and 25 cu/ft of luggage, and a 2500lb trailer out back.

Remember, the Magnum was for sale before the Charger, so technically the Charger is a shrunk-down Magnum.

Ford sold out quickly and had pre-orders of thousands of "new" retro Thunderbirds too......end result, it was discontinued after a few years due to lack of buyer interest. So just because a rabid pre-order exists, it doesn't guarantee any sort of long term success.

I like the front half, but the back looks hideous. They extended the roofline too far and the lines don't look clean. The interior is strait out of a Charger/Magnum. And what's up with that afterthought spoiler? Power is there, but it weighs close to 800lbs more than it's competors. Typical Chrysler. Put out a retro car that buyers will flock to the hype, then sales will stagnate. Let's see. Prowler, Viper (only 800 sold last year), PT cruiser, need I go on?

Holy frickin' asscrackers. I read this at work, then I got on the road and I saw something that dwarfed this on ugly. Its the Volvo C30...

http://www.autoviaggiando.com/archivio/2006/01/11-...

Its not just a concept, I saw a fairly old couple driving it..

http://cache.jalopnik.com/cars/images/2006/07/2007...

Its defiantly the ugliest thing I've ever seen, dwarfing the Ridgeline, xB, Element, everything. It was pure amazing ugly.

i can top that:

olympics of ugliness
1) the undefeated champ, the chrysler crossfire
2) the kia amanti (google it and weep)
3) pretty much any lincoln and cadillac
4) the porsche cayenne V6 (it's worse with the tiny wheels the V6 comes with)
5) any recent renault, and some nissans (since they were bought out by renault the ugliness has spread0

... the list goes on and on

what always amazes me is that not one guy makes or decides to make these monstrosities; they are designed by a team and signed off by a committee. are all these people blind?? can they not see that a chrysler sebring looks like a caricature of areal car that desperatley wants to resemble a crossfire (and why would it want that? WHY????). and older saturns... jesus f christ are those people blind?

Everyone has a different consideration of what is style. No one can ever agree on something fully. To some the style of Aston martin seems to be bland but to other it does not.

The designers come from different background, have different inspirations of what a car/suv/truck should look like, as they work as a team they influence it and there in you end up with a fugy design. Some of best and worst design come from a single designer working without too much influence from others. Most design from a team usually are market oriented for a particular type of segment.

Good point.

And it doesn't look like it has much space. Half of the length looks like the engine compartment

It's supposed to be that way "The vehicle will slot under the mid-size MLK SUV". I think they are targeting buyers who couldn't care less about huge SUVs with crappy handling.

Anyway. I think this car looks ugly. Subaru Forrester definately comes to mind. Mercedes is making uglier cars every year.

40 MPG? The latest 2.2 litre diesel Toyota RAV4 will average 42 MPG, but it does has a slightly CO2 of 175 grams.
