Bill Gates may give Melinda Gates everything a women could want, but that can't stop her from wanting more -- she recently revealed she yearns for the iPhone, but that they aren't allowed in the house of Gates.  (Source: AP)
Melinda may yearn for the iPhone, but some things just don't fly in Bill Gates' house

Arguably the most instantly recognized figures in the computer industry is the brilliant and at times divisive Microsoft founder Bill Gates.  Mr. Gates built an empire, the likes of which the young tech industry had never seen, releasing dominant software products.  And while Mr. Gates has ceded control of the empire to close friend Steve Ballmer, he still remains deeply involved with the company.

Bill Gates and his wife, Melinda Gates are currently enjoying the fact that Bill has a bit more free time these days -- if only a little bit more.  They have three children -- Jennifer (13), Rory (10), and Phoebe (7).

In a recent interview with the magazine Vogue, Melinda Gates discussed their house and family and offered up one humorous tidbit.  She stated, "There are very few things that are on the banned list in our household. But iPods and iPhones are two things we don't get for our kids."

However, she admits, "Every now and then I look at my friends and say 'Ooh, I wouldn't mind having that iPhone.'"

For now, though, she will have to resist her yearning and sustain on Microsoft's hottest released and unreleased offerings.  According to the report the Gates house, unsurprisingly, features multiple copies of Windows 7, an Xbox 360, and a Microsoft Surface machine.  However, that doesn't stop a girl from fantasizing.

Sorry Bill, 50 billion is not enough!

Why on earth would she ever admit this? You have 50~ billion dollars through no work of your own, the least you could do is not mention that you would rather use the flagship product of your husbands biggest competitor.

Funny story though heh..

Why not mention it? It's just a funny little anecdote told during an interview with Vogue magazine. It also does a little to show the quirky family side of the Gates' and since this was probably assumed by people anyway, there's no harm here.

Also, she was rich before they met and was already a philanthropist. Bill didn't find her working at the local Wendys.

Its just hard to wrap my head around that's all.. You say why not? I say why? What good could it possibly do regardless if it was 'assumed' anyways?

All I have to say is she better be glad she is not Balmer's wife, I swear he would eat his children if it meant better profits for Microsoft ;)

Now that's probably spot on. :)

That is pretty funny. I also liked the story on how MS banned ipods on campus in 2005 because more employees were using them than any other portable music player.

Well, in 2005, what were the other options? When the iPod came out, it did pretty much trounce all existing mp3 players in terms of usability.

seriously. she has billions. Is it really that hard to NOT damage your husband's company's image?

all she had to do was say nothing....

"she has billions"

and she was there when he made all those billions. have you ever heard of the saying "the emperor has no clothes"

she can say whatever she wants.... it's not going to change the fact that Apple makes superior product.

By Boze on 3/8/2009 1:10:42 AM , Rating: 2
"Popular" should not be confused with "superior". Even if you do confuse those things, how do you even define "superior"?

Easier to use?
More processing power?
More extensive software library?
Higher degree of compatibility with existing hardware?

What criteria determine superiority?

If you recall, Betamax was superior to VHS in every technical aspect, yet VHS won out.

Sorry, if this is in error as I am not up on the latest phones, but does Microsoft even have a direct competing product to the iPhone? Does Microsoft make a phone? If not, then they are not a direct competitor in this field, therefor I do not see what the problem is.

By jeff834 on 3/3/2009 3:29:46 PM , Rating: 2
There are no MS brand phones, however a number of phones (HTC touches, Palms, and some other smart phones) use a mobile version of the Windows OS. Technically speaking using an iPhone over a windows mobile phone would take money away from MS, but it's also just bad form to use something from a direct competitor in general.

I agree with the OP. What a horrible wife.

Bill, buddy, it's time to trade up. Her tits are sagging. The 1990's just called and it wants it's hairstyle back. And her face is tired. And she just backstabbed you in Vogue of all rags.

You are worth more than god. I'm sure there are hotter, and more sensible women out there for you.

I completely agree for many reasons. Microsoft's portable device divisions are horrendous in the style factor. While the products work very well a few simple changes and they could be leaders.

The top being how long will it take Microsoft to come up with a half decent competitor to the blackberry device? How many people have Microsoft Exchange and Blackberry devices instead of Windows Mobile devices? EPIC FAIL MICROSOFT! But I guess the blackberry market is a niche area. Rolls Eyes. There are people considering iPhones over Windows Mobile on Exchange because Microsoft has failed so horribly in this area.

Well aware of of the Windows Mobile coming out late this year but hey Microsoft make the interface skinable instead of looking like my boring PC or determining with the hexagons what is cool? Let the user choose an interface they want and let Microsoft manage the back end sync abilities? Free downloadable interface skins? Who cares if someone runs a skin that makes the Windows Mobile device look and feel like the Apple. Its all about device sales isnt it? Is that so hard?

I personally have a Zune and its great but somehow the ball has been dropped when it comes to Zune. Apple is very deadly in the marketing of the iPod. Kudos to them but the Zune personally is on par with an iPod. Whatever difference there are between the two is negligible. EPIC FAIL ON MICROSOFT MARKETING! Even though I bought one.

I'm a PC commercials are a step in the right direction keep the ball rolling but don't keep making interfaces on portable devices that feel like I'm shopping for shoes with Seinfeld!!!

How long will it take you to get ZUNE fully integrated with the 360 including movie downloads/syncing? EPIC FAILING OPPORTUNITY TO CAPITALIZE ON YOUR CONSOLE SUCCESS TO IMPROVE SALES IN OTHER AREAS! Still time to do this.

Sorry for the shouting I see a lot of potential in Microsoft products but they fail to capitalize on them. They get so close then stop short. Their products work great but but fail for style which could probably be solved as easily as custom skins.

BTW you still have completely missed an entire segment in the Console wars.

By psonice on 3/3/2009 9:05:17 PM , Rating: 2
Zune is pretty competitive with the ipod classic, but that's pretty much last year's ipod.

It can only compete with the touch on capacity. If the main mp3 markets are cost, capacity, features and size, MS are only in the game for capacity right now, and for that they're not exactly ahead.

I guess windows mobile would compete against osx on the iphone/ipod touch, but there's very little out there using it for media players.

Everybody knows those random quotes that generate at the bottom. This was my quote for the page:

"There's no chance that the iPhone is going to get any significant market share. No chance." -- Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer

Even the company founder's wife wants one, that pretty much upped that quote a notch :P

I think her quote would make a fine addition to the database as well.
