No word on when the launch might happen

In Europe and other parts of the world, cars powered by diesel engines are very common. However, in the the U.S. market, only Volkswagen Group of America (VWoA) has found the great success with its TDI engines. VWoA recently announced that it crossed the 100,000 sales mark for the first time in the U.S. for TDI sales in its Volkswagen and Audi branded vehicles.
Mazda is looking to get in on the diesel action as well, but the company has been dragging its feet for quite some time. Early last year, Mazda announced that its Skyactiv-D engine would be coming to the Mazda 6 midsize sedan in the second half of 2013. However, the company announced that it was delaying that launch until Spring 2014 due to a failure to meet emissions regulations.

Now, Mazda has announced that it is delaying the launch of the Skyactiv-D engine in the Mazda 6 yet again, but this time the delay is needed to “deliver the right balance between fuel economy and Mazda-appropriate driving performance.”
Since it promised and failed to deliver twice on its Skyactiv-D engine, Mazda isn’t announcing another launch date. The company simply states, “further information on the program, including a timeline of launch for North America, technical specifications and fuel economy will be available at a later date, closer to launch."

I dunno, the Mazda 3 Looks almost the same to me. At least the 2014 sedan version.

Not sure I agree it's better than all their other cars but the 6 is pretty and even more so in the wagon version which is also the one that sells best here. Still the CX-5 is not bad for the sort of car it is and the new Mazda 3 is very nice (but you could call that a smaller version of the 6's design).

The 6 follows Mazda's new design philosophy and it is not far from following one of their design prototypes - the Shinari

Oh, and before that they of coursed showed the world the amazing Furai

Yup CX5 is not bad looking and gets great mileage for the amount of utility you get out of it. I'm not sure its the best image for a guy, but like the Subaru outback they are great for hauling skis, bikes, and other toys. Once Subaru puts the BRZ engine in the outback there is going to be some real competition.

And it's pretty light for that type of car. Also, interesting you can get a manual transmission (on base engine only of course). Wonder what the take rate is on that.

And a nice driver too. Sure it didn't have the 'slam your asshole into the back of the seat' boost levels of my STI, but it was quick enough and just felt fun to drive, and pretty competent around the corners for a FWD.

It's too bad all their current Skyactiv-G engines are grossly underpowered. I put my CX5 2.5 on a dyno last weekend and the best of three runs with simulated cooling and 60F ambient temp showed 141whp at 5700RPM and 136lb/ft at 2900RPM.

For comparison, my 2012 Escape with a 2.5L non-direct injection Ford/Mazda engine rated at 170/170 instead of 184/184 under similar conditions dyno two years ago saw 155hp at 5500RPM and 152lb/ft at 3100RPM.

The fuel economy between the two vehicles is identical. I drive both regularly.

The CX-5 and Skyactiv technology, for all its worth, doesn't seem to net any fuel economy savings while being extremely expensive and complex, and likely, less reliable than tradition MPFI.

They need this diesel if they want to be competitive.

Mazda always seem to overrate their engines. You'd think with 13:1 compression on a 2.5L they could easily meet their power figures and then some. That's just not impressive at all and with the sacrifices in power, I'd expect better fuel economy than that too. My wife's BMW X1 is rated at 23/24 and, when I'm driving, I get 27/35/31 AND has 240hp (230 on the dyno!!).

Don't even get me started on the stupid "light truck" emissions loophole...

Don't get me started on the fact that I can't buy a single small diesel truck in the US... Amarok, Hellix, etc

Why does the US have such a clumsy emissions standard? A single standard defined by gasoline engines, that diesel engines are reqired to meet? It's absurd.
It's not clumsy or absurd, just more stringent. I'd like more diesels here too but they don't get to skate on emissions. And, NO, diesels are NOT cleaner than gas engines. CO2 is lower but they emit more particulates than gasoline and that has to be kept in check too.

More particles than gasoline - are you sure that is still the case when the Diesel comes fitted with a particle filter?

In fact it may even so that modern gasoline engines are worse than older gasoline ones and certainly worse than modern Diesel engines!

Hmmm, its interesting reading the link you provided.

They provide no source for old gasoline engine particle emission, just claim new ones are significantly worse.

Essentially though, it doesn't make sense to alter the emissions standards for different engines. Whether it's gasoline, NG, or Diesel, all car engines should be projected to pollute under certain limits per mile for a range of pollutants.

Wrong, read the euro standards at the wikipedia link I posted. The Euro 5 standard (currently in place) as well as the future Euro 6 standard specify the exact same PM limit for both gasoline and diesel. Particulates are not an issue.

It dose not help that US Diesel is also more polluted then in the EU, cleaner fuel also helps to keep the modern delicate tuned engines working.

Actually the decreased sulfur content in diesels has caused lubrication issues that manufacturers have had to address.

X2 The EU is now finding that those particulates affect people with heart conditions. We don't need that here. Why the hell would you want to make air quality worse?

And I haven't seen one diesel pump that wasn't ULSD either. Get off the dirty fuel quality already, it's old news.

because I intend to get one! I loved my VW diesel, but it just wasn't reliable enough (same for the BMW). My mazda has been pretty solid so I expect this diesel to do well too.

2001, U.S. The engine, transmission and other stuff were replaced under warranty at different times. They took good care of me but spent way too much of my time was spent at the shop.

They have been out here in Europe for about a year now and I have heard nothing bad. I have my eyes on one myself so I have been keeping my ears open.

I may be of interest that Mazda is actually putting out an Skyactive-D in the US this year - a LMP2 class race car:

With a bit of luck they could go and get another Le Mans win :-)

Mazda's Sky-D in the USA is perhaps the biggest blunder of a product launch for them ever. This has been in the works for YEARS people. Perhaps they're rethinking their decision to put the Sky-D in the 6?

Mazda is making a HUGE mistake putting the Sky-D in their new 6 sedan. The CX-5 would be a much wiser choice. Here's the formula:

AWD + good looking vehicle + practicality of SUV + great MPG + diesel torque = HUGE SALES

Seriously Mazda, get it together!! Bring the CX-5 Diesel to the US and I'll beat a path to my dealer's door!
