The last RC before final release of Mandriva Linux 2010 is now available

The team behind the Mandriva Linux operating system recently announced the immediate availability  of the Mandriva Linux 2010 Release Candidate 2.

The update mainly fixed user-reported bugs, but had several new software packages, with kde 4.3.2, GNOME 2.28, Poulsbo, Nepomuk, and Moblin included.  Moblin is one of the latest mobile Linux GUIs available, and Mandriva has become the first distribution to use it.

Missing from RC2 is the KMyMoney2 personal finance manager, which wasn't included due to being "too unstable for now."  Furthermore, the RC2 release shouldn't be used to upgrade over Mandriva Installations, as the developers note "unresolved issues" related to KDE and GNOME may render the install useless.

The RC2 can be found here.

In the Mandriva Linux Spring 2009 release six months ago, the OS boot time increased up to 25% and KDE 4.2.2 was shipped as the default OS.

The final release of Mandriva Linux 2010 will be introduced on November 3.

Even though Linux distributions such as Ubuntu and Fedora remain popular, Mandriva has fought desperately to stay competitive.  Just a few years ago, Mandriva -- formerly Mandrake -- and Red Hat led the Linux industry as versions easy for beginners, but the likes of Ubuntu and Novell SuSe have made things extremely difficult.

I love linux, but why is this a story? What I mean is, what is the big deal? There is easily a new version to several distros every month that usually solve an esoteric bug involving a process or program I will rarely if never use.

Also, last time I used Mandriva I wasn't very impressed, guess I am more of a Debian fan.

Mandriva, I used to love thy ways of subtle power. Now I have fallen in love for another. Puppy linux is now holder of my heart strings.

Was thinking the exact same thing when I saw it.

Well it was news to me. I've been using Ubuntu for quiet some time and wasn't even sure if Mandriva still existed so there's a good chance it's indeed news to the Linux hobbyists even if not the hard core users.

I'm a Windows 7 fan myself.

I tried Linux, wanted so bad to accept it. I tried PCLinuxOS, Fedora Core, Ubuntu and OpenSUSE. Out of all of them, only OpenSUSE managed to impress me the most to be a possible competitor against Windows. Even it, though, failed to meet a lot of my needs for an OS.

I'll stick with Windows because after all...it is a Windows world.

I remember trying Mandrake some years ago, which worked, but it was little more than something to experiment with a bit, for me.

If there was a new final release of its successor, then that may have been newsworthy, but a release candidate of it? If we're going to have news reports of the latest RC releases of various Linux distros, we're going to have an awful lot of mainly irrelevant Linux related posts on DT (I'm not suggesting Linux is irrelevant, but that posts about release-candidates of this or that distro is only likely to be of interest to a very limited audience who will already have read about it on their favourite dedicated Linux news site).

Slower boot time is now an advertised feature? No wonder this distro hasn't been relevant for at least 5 years.

Redundant to even bother...

There's already a website that keeps track of a good majority of Linux and BSD distros.

Eh? Because there's never been a way to purchase software online before.

Why can't I rate this down lower? Reader1 always spouts idiocy like this.
