The team behind the Mandriva Linux
operating system recently announced the immediate availability
of the Mandriva Linux 2010 Release Candidate 2.
The update
mainly fixed user-reported bugs, but had several new software
packages, with kde 4.3.2, GNOME 2.28, Poulsbo, Nepomuk, and Moblin
included. Moblin is one of the latest mobile Linux GUIs
available, and Mandriva has become the first distribution to use
it.
Missing from RC2 is the KMyMoney2 personal finance
manager, which wasn't included due to being "too unstable for
now." Furthermore, the RC2 release shouldn't be used to
upgrade over Mandriva Installations, as the developers note
"unresolved issues" related to KDE and GNOME may render the
install useless.
The RC2 can
be found here.
In the Mandriva Linux Spring 2009 release
six months ago, the OS boot time increased up to 25% and KDE 4.2.2
was shipped as the default OS.
The final release of Mandriva
Linux 2010 will be introduced on November 3.
Even though Linux
distributions such as Ubuntu and Fedora remain popular, Mandriva has
fought desperately to stay competitive. Just a few years ago,
Mandriva -- formerly Mandrake -- and Red Hat led the Linux industry
as versions easy for beginners, but the likes of Ubuntu and Novell
SuSe have made things extremely difficult.
