Man kills mother of his kids over PlayStation

Video games are a great form of escapism for many people around the world. Video games have become much more of a mainstream, family-oriented hobby in recent years with the advent of game systems like the Nintendo Wii that are designed for family fun.

However, video games often are blamed for the woes of society and have been pegged as the reason for violence and murder by some. A 62-year-old man named Malcolm Palmer from the UK has admitted to stabbing his partner to death after she reportedly became addicted to the Grand Theft Auto video game and kicked Palmer out of their bedroom.

Telegraph.uk reports that Palmer was forced to sleep on the couch so that his partner, Carol Cannom, could stay up all night playing the PlayStation console on a 37-inch plasma TV in the bedroom. According to reports, the couple had been together for 30 years and had three children together.

The PlayStation console was purchase for their 10-year-old son according to Palmer. The boy would play the console until midnight when Cannom would take over, often playing until five or six in the morning according to Palmer.

John Pini QC for the prosecution said, "Carol quickly became hooked. He [Palmer] was very unhappy about the amount of time she was playing on the PlayStation."

Palmer says that he had become convinced she was having an affair and went into a violent rage. During his violent rage, Palmer attacked the woman with two kitchen knives and inflicted 20 separate wounds to her upper chest, killing her. The murder was reportedly heard by the couple’s son who dialed police. Palmer reportedly took the phone from his son and told police, "I'm sorry. I think I've killed her."

Defense lawyer Timothy Spencer QC told the court, "The genesis of this tragedy bizarrely lies with the purchase of the PlayStation."

A teen in the U.S. was accused of killing his parents after they took away his Halo 3 game in December of 2008.

hey! i'm a woman who plays gta4! and gta3... of course, i'll have to wait until it becomes less popular to buy a real copy...so i just go to my friend's and play. ^_^

wow, that's horrendous. clearly they had more problems than just a game console. still, further evidence that guns don't kill people; people kill people. with knives and things.

Yes but is that March 30 US time... meaning it was already April 1st in the UK??? Or posted just before midnight March 30 as part of a AFD prank?

/Sarcasm/ it says last updated 5:44 BST which is +1 GMT. Still means it could be an early joke... it has happened before...

If this is real, the saddest thing is that it will be blamed on video games.

Crazy bi*ch plus crazy man get into fight. Let's not claim that the object of the fight is the problem. Any woman who is that addicted has a problem. Any man who stabs someone 20 times for anything also has a problem.

Good thing is, now we have one nutjob out of the gene pool and another one in prison.

That is, IF this is a true story.

Cmon think about it. Nowhere does it say the husband was addicted to games. Nowhere does it even say he played games (how could he, his son had it till midnight and his wife had it till morning).

The playstation's dangerous because your spouse might kill you for playing with it! Here, look at the monkey. Look at the silly monkey!

i actually live about 30 miles away from this in the uk. palmer was from long sutton, lincolnshire. palmer has sentenced to life in a uk prison, which i didnt think the article mentioned. which ironically, allows him to purchase a games console to spend the last of his years hopefully reminding him of the terrible thing has done.

to say that im quite stunned that this is big news on primarily an american tech site is an understatement!

Skate or Die was my favorite game for the NES which definitely lead me down the path of PC repair and support which is my career. So in this way GAMES did me good. =)

GTA Series never interested me... the way I read the story is that he didn't take the proper method before he snapped. He should of recogonized an addiction to Video Games - for crying out loud they had a kid and it's really simple to see when a child is really getting to much gaming time.

Adults are no different even though we 'strive' to be - We just get addicted to different things other than maybe Video Games (except all those MMORPGers - I'm one).

Simple truth - he could of manned up and dealt with this issue way before he decided to go into the kitchen and grab some knives. Something indicates there is much more to the story than what is given - for even the smallest things over time can really really annoy and anger someone if they let it.

Had he used a pink, 18-inch double-dong to kill his wife,...then, yes,...GTA might've had something to do with it. :P

All addictions are damaging
By Beenthere on 4/1/2009 3:25:50 PM , Rating: 1
All additions are damaging to health. Denial doesn't change reality. Playing video games for entertainment is fine if you're playing proper games and you do so in moderation. An addiction is an addiction and it's unhealthy regardless if it's video games or drugs. In fact it can be deadly as we read over and over weekly in the news. Attempting to rationaize addictive behavior is a waste of energy.

The 12am-6am jaunts of GTA may have allowed frustration to build up ... but could it be that the threat of losing his children was the "straw that broke the camels back"?

I still don't get it though ... if she was happy/oblivious with the PS/GTA and the 37" TV, why ask the guy to move out at all. There seems to be some pieces missing here ...

That night the solitaire software experienced a mysterious software glitch and erased itself. Oh dear, these things happen.

By wordsworm on 4/1/2009 7:43:34 PM , Rating: 2
Ok, I've been known to be a bit grumpy when woken up before I was ready and for no good reason. Heck, I've thrown a roommate out of the apartment for playing music when I was trying to sleep. I turned it down the first time. I can be really grumpy when I don't get my sleep. I don't know if I'd kill someone over it, but nonetheless, lack of sleep can cause a temporary lack of sanity.

However, if the game is to be blamed, then wouldn't it make more sense if the girlfriend had killed the boyfriend and then stolen the car?

SO much wrong
By mindless1 on 4/1/2009 9:43:00 PM , Rating: 2
#1, a couple needs respect each others' needs for basic things like sleep.

#2, if each can't do that, divorce time.

#3, a large plasma TV in the bedroom is an invitation for problems. Husband should've at least had it hauled off the next morning.

#4, husband could have just taken a day off and made sure his wife couldn't sleep when she was trying to after her all night gaming marathons to make a point.

#5, pass out the Darwin awards, someone with nothing better to do at this point in life but play that game all night at the expense of people she supposedly loved, should've been taken out of the gene pool years earlier.

#6, #5 does not excuse violence let alone murder. Husband's guilt is not mitigated, he had multiple alternative methods of dealing with the situation and should've grown a pair of balls and put his foot down on this nonsense, if anyone leaves the bedroom it should be the gamer, not the person trying to sleep.

#7, don't stay with someone that will not respect your basic needs. There is never a good outcome.

#8, this tragedy just goes to show, people can be in the autumn of their life and still be less mature than an 18 year old.

#9, don't become this couple, there are so many better things to do in life than waste it away playing games more often than an occasional form of entertainment along with all the other forms of it in this world - in moderation, not excess.

#10, to sum things up, there was a problem with this marriage that had nothing to do with gaming, but gaming was the method and excuse one person used to disrespect the other. Give people respect, if you can't do so full time then don't be around them full time.

Video game not at fault
By adiposity on 4/2/2009 11:33:30 AM , Rating: 2
It's worth mentioning. The player of murderous, hooker stomping, cop-killing GTA was the victim here. The person who went crazy and killed someone wasn't getting his rage out with video games, apparently. And presumably, he would have killed her just as soon for playing Mario Party.
