MSI GT683R  (Source: MSI)
New GPU was unveiled at Computex 2011

At Computex 2011 this week, NVIDIA unveiled a new mobile GPU called the GTX 560M as the high-end mobile GPU for gamers. MSI is one of the GTX 560M GPU launch partners and has unveiled a new gaming notebook that uses the GPU.

According to AnandTech, the core clock for the GTX 560M is 775MHz (shader clock is 1550MHz) while the GDDR5 memory is running at 2.5GHz.

The notebook is the MSI GT683R and it has some nice tech inside. It has the GTX 560M GPU paired with 1.5GB of VRAM. It also runs an Intel Core i7-2630QM CPU and Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit for the OS. The notebook has a 15.6-inch screen with a 1080p HD resolution.

“As the first GTX-class gaming GPU in the 500 Series, the GeForce GTX 560M delivers blistering frame rates and beautifully rendered scenes with Direct X 11 done right,” said David Ragones, director of product marketing at NVIDIA. “The MSI GT683R will be first out of the gate with this gaming workhorse.”

Other features of the notebook included MSI Cooler Boost Technology, Dynaudio Premium Sound Speakers, and THX TruStudio Pro. The notebook has 1TB of storage in RAID 0 configuration and it has 12GB of DDR3 RAM. MSI also fits the notebook with a USB 3.0 port for fast external accessories and the machine has a HDMI 1.4 output. The integrated webcam has 720p resolution and the machine has 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.

The Core i7 processor in the notebook runs at 2 to 2.9 GHz and has a 6MB cache. The notebook ships with 12GB of RAM and will support up to 16GB so it has a little room for expansion if needed. It has a Super Multi optical drive and a wired LAN connection as well. The battery inside the machine is a 9-cell unit and the notebook weighs in at 7.8 pounds.

This isn't the sort of notebook you will want to carry around with you everywhere, it's more of a desktop replacement.

...why they make "gaming machines" with 15.6" screens. Seriously...they should all be 17" and up.

I'd rather have a gaming "nettop" form factor PC with USB 3, mini display port, ethernet port, and an hdmi port.

I don't get why you need 17" screen on a "laptop" for anything. I have a 16" and it's ridiculous.

If it's being used as a desktop replacement (like I do with my laptop in lab), even my 17" screen seems puny compared to the dual 21" monitors I have at home. I'm constantly running out of screen space and had to bring in an old 17" 4:3 monitor to work just so I can fit everything in. For portability I have my Asus Transformer, sometimes you need a mobile powerhouse.

I'd rather have a 15.6" laptop personally. I'll do my primary gaming on my desktop (with a big screen) and when I'm on trips, at work, or too lazy to get up from the couch the notebook will do. I'd rather it be powerful and easily portable than big & clunky.

To each their own though.

I agree, I totally love having a 15" gaming laptop. If they somehow managed to get them in a smaller form factor, it'd be even better for when I travel- like a 12 or 13" (with a BD/DVD burner of course)

15" is still chunky for a portable, but it is a good compromise to be able to fit a DVD drive and discrete graphics card

because those of use who travel so extensively that we have no use for a desktop--need something a little bit more "portable" than a 17" behemoth.

15" form factor is perfect. 15.6" is pushing it. bring back 15.4"

Why not?

SSDs?

The specs of this laptop seem like overkill when it does not have a SSD...?

Is it HDD or SDD?
"The notebook has 1TB of storage in RAID 0 "

Also, what about the screen QUALITY? Response time???
For a gaming laptop at this price, I'd think it should have both.

Granted most consumers see "1080p" and automatically believe it's a QUALITY display.... :)

I doubt it's an IPS display since they're generally slower than regular displays. Still would be nice. This thing is 2lbs heavier than a regular 15.6" laptop :-O

SSDs don't do anything to improve game performance other than the occasional loading time. They have no effect on frame rate. Furthermore, you need a hard drive's capacity on a proper gaming machine since games these days can take up 12-15gb. That'll fill up an SSD very quickly.

Didn't anybody tell them that those tacky neon's are now annoying and shouldn't be used anymore? Believe me I have a Asus G50 and I wish I could turn them off they light up an entire room at night.

You CAN turn them off. It just takes a few minutes and a screwdriver to unhook the plugs. I know I would.

you can turn the off on the MSI software. it's a 10 second fix with a couple of clicks. (yes, that rhymed).
