NVIDIA home theater PC users rejoice! MSI's NX7600GT Diamond Plus arrives with HDMI!

DailyTech previously reported on ATI Radeon based HDCP compliant graphics cards with HDMI audio/video output. HDCP compliant NVIDIA GeForce 7 series based cards started showing up but were only available in dual-DVI only configurations. MSI is announcing the worlds first retail NVIDIA based graphics card equipped with HDMI audio/video output capabilities. Sony’s previously released VAIO XL1 and XL2 Media Center PCs featured a GeForce 6200 or GeForce 6600GT with HDMI audio/video output but the graphics card was an OEM only item. The MSI NX7600GT Diamond Plus is based on NVIDIA’s GeForce 7600GT graphics processor. MSI has equipped the NX7600GT Diamond Plus with 256MB of GDDR3 memory clocked at 1400 MHz on a 128-bit memory interface—plenty for gaming and high definition video playback. The 7600GT GPU is clocked at NVIDIA’s recommended speed of 560 MHz.  

There are plenty of video outputs available with a single dual-link DVI-I and HDMI audio/video outputs. VIVO functions are also available for S-Video and composite video input and output. HDMI output is provided by a Silicon Image SiI 1930 HDCP PanelLink Transmitter. The Silicon Image SiI 1930 also handles HDCP capabilities with its integrated HDCP cipher engine. With the Silicon Image SiI 1930 HDCP PanelLink Transmitter the MSI NX7600GT Diamond Plus is can support video resolutions up to 1080p—perfect for Blu-Ray and HD-DVD formats. S/PDIF audio input is available for users that want to output audio simultaneously with video via HDMI. The Silicon Image SiI 1930 handles the MSI NX7600GT Diamond Plus’ audio capabilities too. With the S/PDIF audio input the MSI NX7600GT Diamond Plus can accept 7.1 channel audio sources up to 192 KHz of resolution. Other notable features of include its 12 pixel pipeline architecture and support for PureVideo HD.

The MSI NX7600GT Diamond Plus utilizes a standard NVIDIA reference design heatsink/fan as required by the 7600GT. It’s strange to see MSI implementing HDMI with NVIDIA’s 7600GT GPU as the lower 7600GS has similar features but only requires passive cooling—a nice feat for Media Center PCs.

Pricing for the NX7600GT is expected around $200-250 MSRP with an end of August expected shipping date. Unlike the Sapphire X1600 Pro HDMI, MSI does not include an HDMI to DVI converter. Bundled HDMI cables are optional depending on the area and distributor.

Why the heck would they, when it has a DVI connector??? That sounds pretty pointless to convert the HDMI connector to DVI when a connector is already present.

I think the idea is that if HDMI becomes the standard connector on monitors and TVs, you would want more like 2-3 HDMI connections, not just 1. It would be interesting how you would conceptually push audio down multiple HDMI paths...

The pointless thing is that HDMI is probably going to fail anyway and another "standard" will take over as the thing to get. These people need to make up their minds.

HDMI is already ubiquitous, so don't plan on it failing. The reason they should have included an adaptor is for dual-monitor support, but I suppose enough manufactures are starting to pick those up that I'm not upset.

If you want dual monitor support then why by this card.
Only about 3 cards on the market don't have have dual DVI so getting one of them then asking a converter cable doesn't make alot since.

Please show me ONE consumer electronic device (or even a computer part) with DisplayPort. Hell, we don't even know what the DP connector looks like!

They should have put 2 DVIs and have a header on the card with a separate plugin slot with HDMI.
Apparently this was aimed at mid to upper performance HTPCs.

you can easily convert HDMI to DVI, but for some reason (dont know the technicals) it doesnt like converting the otherway, I think it has some to do with DVI not carrying sound signal... but like I said, I didnt look up the exact reason...

DVI is limited to the RGB colorspace, HDMI can do YPrBr as well as RGB. Think of it as digital component wich is better for video. Some people report "crushed" black and/or whites when using DVI. HDMI can also higher bit depth, but i think only single link DVI is limited to 8bit.

Decent HDTVs have DVI inputs. And there are DVI-HDMI convertor cables for those which don't have. Thus video card with DVI outputs is more than enough for Home Theater PC.

BTW: Why would you want to transfer the audio: video card -> TV -> amplifier, when you can transfer the audio directly: audio card -> amplifier (I hope nobody is using TV speakers with Home Theater PC...)

Because with HDMI you can go from PC -> Receiver -> TV and have the receiver extract audio. Just more convenient and cleaner to run a single cable for audio and video, especially in tighter, cramped spaces.

True; however, the 7600 GT has more/better Purevideo support than the GS, particularly in the HD realm.

7600GS is the same as the 7600GT except it has a lower core/memory clock and can be passively cooled.

I have to say I am most interested in HDMI as an audio transport.

The Article states S/PDIF AND 7.1ch 192 resolution. The problem is spdif doesnt have enought bandwith for that... I believe its only 2ch 24/96, you get 5.1 or higher by using a lossy codec like AC-3 or DTS. Of course HDMI can suppport 7.1 PCM and the audio chipsets can support it, but if the video cards are using spdif over hdmi I find it unlikely.

The Gigabyte g965-DSQ "might" (only seen pics) have an 8 ch HDMI audio out on the motherboard, but I dont know that for sure and HDMI videocards have to accept the input (for multiplexing).

Anyone with more concrete info?

HUH? Oral thing? What are you trying to say? My concern is that it says it accepts a 7.1 input via SPIDF but does it really have a HDMI 1.3 output?
