Logitech ships is one billionth PC mouse

The mouse is something that goes with a computer like peanut butter goes with jelly. Virtually every desktop PC on the planet uses a mouse and a keyboard for input. One of the biggest names in computer peripherals, including mice, is Logitech. Today the firm announced a major milestone for the computer mouse.

Logitech announced today that it has shipped its billionth computer mouse. Logitech entered into the aftermarket mouse market in 1982 with its first PC mouse called the Logitech P4. After entering into the market in 1982, it took Logitech more than ten years to sell its first 100 million mice.

Over the next seven years, Logitech says that it shipped over 500 million mice in total. Five years from the 500 million mark, Logitech has shipped its billionth rodent. Logitech makes an astounding number of computer mice each day at an average of 376,000 mice daily. Each month the peripheral maker produces 7.8 million mice.

Logitech is doing something a bit odd with the special billionth mouse and will be letting users chronicle its travels from shipping to its final destination via the Logitech blog -- BLogitech. Analysts predict that the next billion computer users will be using computers by 2014 showing the mouse market still has legs.

Probably more than half of that billion are in the trash, with the rest to follow.

Not saying anything negative about Logitech, but with an average lifespan of a couple of years, there are lots of mice going into the trash!

I typically upgrade mice every 1-2 years. Normally its an after thought, but really I don't consider it a bad thing. I mean I've never actually had a mouse just "fail" they've always gone bad overtime and I just buy a new one.

I recently switched from a logitech to a razr deathadder which I must say I am very happy with. I'm still acord guy though.

I bought the G7 mouse with swappable rechargeable battery.... Going on 4 years now. Probably about an average of 20 hours per week that it is used, since home computer and not work computer.... Been a great little mouse, I've had a lot of cheap mice and they do not last long at all.
Of course you need to be kind to your mice... clean them once in a while and not bash the hell out of them when you play COD4 or WoW on-line and things do not go your way.... :)
It's a fine tuned electrical device not a whipping post..... Not saying you abuse your mouse, just that I watch people get angry and pick up the mouse and slam it on to their desk. Not that they mean to harm the mouse, it's just that it's already in their hand.

Not bad, I pretty much replace mine whenever they break or stop working properly which seems to be every 2-3 years. And I have enough older working ones that I can use temporarily.

I have found that the Logitech mice seem to have the least problems compared to any other through the past 2 decades. Of course I also buy the basic cheap models... currently have 2 Logitech on my desk here, and an original Microsoft Intellipoint optical on the wifes desktop... otherwise the OEM and basic sub-$10 mice die too quickly whereas the Logitech always last 2-3 years for me.

What about Microsoft?

You're saying Logitech is making mouse history, but I find it hard to believe that, say, Microsoft or Dell hasn't already hit this "milestone". Where are they in comparison, or is this just a press release regurgitation with no independent research?

microsoft would probably be in the running with them...

Dell, are we counting the free ones that come with their computers?

Well, Dell have been selling Logitech mice for years as their own brand.

I own several Logitech mice and am very picky. Took maybe 5 or 6 to finally find the one I like which is the LX7. And bought a spare because they usually replace them with a new model after two years.

Microsoft makes good mice but pisses me off theirs won't work with my KVM while the Logitech does. Go figure.

Logitech main focus - keyboard and mice

Microsoft main focus - software

Dell main focus - assembling of computer equipment they buy from other companies. Dell makes nothing.

There's almost always some glaring error on the keyboard layouts these days, especially from Logitech.
Honestly, there should not be allowed any artistic license for the layout, shape, or size of the 104 keys on a normal Windows keyboard.

The "\" key should be full-sized and directly beneath a full-sized Backspace key.
The arrow keys should line up with the <V> aligned across the bottom in line with the rest of the keys along the bottom row of the keyboard.
The six
Insert, Home, PageUp
Delete, End, PageDown
should be in that order and in normal 3 across configuration.
The numpad should be normal.
The Function keys should be normal.
Etc etc etc.

It's not that hard. Just make that part normal and do whatever the heck you want on the fringes of the keyboard for people that thing they need more buttons and function-programmable "stuff".

But sell a normal keyboard for $10 and $20 please, and not ones with a defect, like a half-sized "\" key stuck incorrectly next to a half-sized Backspace key.
Or arrow keys arranged in a + pattern or out of alignment with the rest of the board.
Or 3 rows of
INS DEL
HOME END
PGUP PGDN
or missing Function keys or missing PrintScreen, ScrollLock, Pause/Break.
Or anything else abnormal or out of alignment.

...Dammit!

and yes, by "full-sized" i mean different things for "\" and Backspace. a "full-sized" "\" key is about 2/3rds the size of the full-size Backspace key.
The key here though, is that they aren't mini, letter-key-sized keys and aren't stuck next to each other on the top row.
