New Logitech G15  (Source: Logitech)
Logitech updates its G15 gaming keyboard and announces G9 gaming mouse

Logitech showed off an update to the G15 gaming keyboard and a new laser gaming mouse called the G9 behind closed doors at E3 last month.  As of today, these new designs are now officially part of Logitech's public portfolio.

Logitech representatives states that feedback from G15 indicated that users didn’t use all the macros the G15 was capable of in its original iteration. Logitech claims the largest complaint on the original G15 was that the keyboard was just too big.

The G15 has changed significantly, most notably by shrinking in size. The shrink was accomplished by losing some of the programmable macro keys on each side of the original G15 keyboard.  The six keys on the new version have three shift states so the new G15 can save a total 18 total macros.

The other big change to the new G15 is moving from a flip up LCD display to one that is permanently fixed in place. The backlighting has also changed from a weak blue on the original to a brighter orange on the new G15. The LCD on the new G15 also uses the orange on black for much improved readability while gaming.

The really slick item that Logitech announced that I was able to get hands on time with at Quakecon is the G9 Laser Mouse. This mouse will be Logitech’s new top-of-the-line gaming mouse when it is available in September.

The G9 ships with two interchangeable grips, one called the Wide Load and the other called the Precision grip. The Wide Load grip is flatter and ideal for those who palm a mouse; the precision grip is textured and has raised areas more like the shape of the ergonomic mice we are used to seeing from Logitech.

The biggest feature of the G9 for gamers is likely to be the on-the-fly adjustable sensitivity that can be set to a low of 200 dpi up to a high of 3200 dpi. I am a big fan of high sensitivity for playing FPS games, and the 3200 dpi was great on the Quake Wars: EnemyTerritory demo Logitech was running.

The G9 also is weight adjustable like the G5 and allows the user to choose the color for the LED lights. If you have ever used the Revolution line of mice from Logitech you are familiar with the hyper-fast scroll wheel. The G9 uses the same scroll wheel as the Revolution series. The G9 set up is much the same as the Logitech VX Revolution notebook mouse.

Internal memory on the G9 allows you to save your profiles to the mouse and then use the mouse on computers without the need for drivers. Logitech representatives indicated the company would offer additional, different grips at some point and possible even grips customized for specific game titles, like the special edition G5 for Battlefield 2142.

If only the G9 was wireless, then I would so get it.

I will second that motion, even though some of the "gaming" qualities of the mouse would be lost with wireless.

I've got a Logitech G7 which I've been using for over a year now, and it is wireless. Best gaming mouse I've ever had, and full of functionality. It can change sensitivity on the fly like the mouse in the article, with a LED read-out on the mouse that shows sensitivy level and battery life.

There are two battery packs, that are changeable in seconds, and last about 8 hours of hard gaming. One is always charging while the other is being used, so you never find yourself without a battery.

I do not miss moving a mouse cord around at all. I do miss the 2nd thumb button, that was not put on the G7 however.

This new mouse can't be any more power hungry than my G7, or at least not by a large amount, so I bet eventually they will put out this new mouse in a wireless version. I'll buy it for the 2nd mouse button.

Dose a wireless mouse such as the G7 support 1000HZ report rate? Probably not.

It's one of those things that you don't notice unless you're dedicated towards gaming. I find that wireless mice have a response time. When I was at a lan I tried out my friend's mouse and noticed it. I then combined it with a 25 ms delay LCD and nearly died (Actually, I did, several times, IN THE FACE.) Unless you play games like Counter Strike or Unreal Tournament, you're not likely to notice, but when you're relying on reflexes, it helps not to have an 8 ms delay over the enemy. I do, however, have a 20" wide screen monitor. It has 8 ms delay but I can't notice it. I decided to get an old 15" CRT down from the loft, but the gold fish bowl hurt me more than my enemies did, and didn't give me much of an advantage. Don't ask why I just told you that.

If you want to know what wireless feels like, it's like playing a game at 15 fps, where moving the mouse seems to take a while to move (with acceleration and deceleration along the way). At 60 FPS you move it it points straight to where you aimed. I'm sure that they're improving, but recharging times and delay means that I can't spend 8 hours solid gaming in front of my PC. For normal people, wireless will do. For me, Razer Copperhead all the way. It's uncomfortable, flashy and great for gaming.

i tried my friend's mx1000 several times and i find it unbearable: delays, innacuracy... everything... i used to have a logitech (almost generic) mouse which was damn good, i bought 3 of them (others excluded that went to my bro/friends). they all lasted me 4 years before one of them broke down recently and i decided to get a g3... fun fun fun (wanted a g5, but thought it wasn't worth it, considering the g3 has the same laser (i think?))

oh yeah, due to my mouse lasting 4 years, i was able to boycott optical mice (which i hated all the way through, however i think laser is more accurate as well as the fact that it was a year old (technology matured) so i was happy.

oh yeah, and one other little thing... moving from ball mouse to laser, i found that i had gotten used to picking up the ball mouse to such a minimal extent that when i moved to laser, it could half-track what was going on when the mouse was being carried to another point on the pad (just above the pad obviously) i'm still getting used to this though i'm almost there...

Get a proper wireless mouse,

Cheap tat wont respond well

Had a Logitech Mouseman worked great, then got a G7 when it finally started to get old and that is exactly the same as a wired mouse.

Wireless mice will work fine as long as the receivers work fast

Radio waves travel at the speed of light
Electrical impulses down a cable travel at the speed of light

I like all these dedicated toward gaming comments.

Like you have to sacrifice the blood of a virgin and burn a wireless mouse in front of a picture of that fatality guy then drink six cans of rockstar and smoke meth for an hour and your a dedicated PGL level gamer.

This story sounds like the biggest exageration I've ever heard. A wireless mouse is NOT going to make it feel like 15fps.. and an lcd monitor refresh rate isn't either, it will cause ghosting not cut your framerate in half.

Honestly if you have all these problems with a wireless mouse it's either a crap wireless mouse, or you have interference or something. A lan where you have 12 people with other wireless devices and maybe even a wireless access point is a perfect situation to get interference.

I hate wireless networking, but when I have my ps3 on upstaris on the wireless AP (this is temporary, it's getting cabled) I can tell the wireless router sitting on my desk is interfering with the mouse.

Under proper working conditions with a quality mouse there is NO lag, NO inacuracy, none whatsoever with my G7. Thats a 100% fact. Anything else is just fud.

Wahey, it's bash a gamer day! For your information, I have a job, go to college and play games as a hobby. I don't smoke meth (Actually, I don't smoke anything), I hardly ever drink and I certainly don't worship Fatal1ty. perhaps you haven't played competitive gaming, but I certainly have. None of the guys I've played against would dream of a wireless mouse and a majority of them wouldn't even recommend an LCD monitor. I'm not quite that extreme, but I see where they're getting at. I know this isn't a Gamer forum, and that's why I'm being rated down. However, I didn't flame or say anything other that I wouldn't recommend wireless for gaming. What I said about my experience with wireless mice is 100% true and if they've improved, then so be it. But I'd still rather have a Razer Copperhead.

Thats BS. I used to compete in a few FPS ladders both Q3 and RTCW. While I don't compete anymore due to getting fed up with clan politics I can still kick the ass of a large number of supposed "hardcore gamers". I've lost count of the servers I've been banned off of for "hacking" by skill-less admins etc.

And I do it all with my G7 and the MX1000 I had before that. My mouse has never lagged and swappin packs is never an issue.

yeah, if this were wireless, i'd buy it. given logitech's track record however, i wouldn't be surprised if a wireless version is made.

as for the new G15, i have the original version and i like the macro buttons on that one better than the new one.

I disagree, wireless mice are annoying I hate rechargeing them and they don't track as well (you will not convince me otherwise). If you're a gamer, you do not have a wireless mouse. If you think you're a gamer and you have a wireless mouse, you're not.

I have a logitech mouse that had a cradle, it's easy enough to use, just drop it in. There isn't even any friction. That said, I use it for my home theater but it's nice. I suppose I should replace it with a Gyration.

I don't understand why lag is a problem with Bluetooth mice. Wii and PS3 controllers feel lagless, I don't know what they do that minimizes it but the mice don't.

If you are ignorant to a subject and post brash generalisations about what other people are or aren't, thinking you are more intelligent, you're not.

The G7 is a beautiful mouse for anyone games or not. Recharging is a non issue with swap packs, it tracks just fine. Probably a hell of a lot better than some of the 20 dollar peice of junk wired mice people have.

I've had the G7 for about a year. It is a really nice mouse, but I still miss my MX700. It took loads of abuse and I wore off the finish, but it was still working fine except for the fact that it wouldn't charge any more.

I miss the extra buttons of the MX700, I can't say that I ever use the buttons on the G7 to change the sensitivity on the fly (particularly as the software changes it automatically depending on the game loaded) and although there's always a second battery available, they don't seem to last very long. Yes, the battery is supposed to last 8 hours, and it probably gets a good 6, but the MX700 used a couple of cheap AAs and lasted at least twice as long.

Maybe I'll move back to wired.

Funny thing, talking about gaming, I used to own a MX700 and game with it and it was ok, but then I started gaming at my friends place (better internet connection) and I will only take my PC and borrow his 2$ PS2 Mouse and keyboard to game, and man let me tell you I kicked ass in FEAR, always first or second on the group on team deathmatch, still no body believes me, not even my friend that was sitting next to me and using a MX1000 and a Saitek KB, gaming is all about skills, not computer parts....Oh I miss those days....

I agree. Nobody should be gaming with a wireless product of any type.
