Logitech's new and improved G9 enthusiast mouse.  (Source: Logitech)

New Logitech G15  (Source: Logitech)
Logitech updates its G15 gaming keyboard and announces G9 gaming mouse

Logitech showed off an update to the G15 gaming keyboard and a new laser gaming mouse called the G9 behind closed doors at E3 last month.  As of today, these new designs are now officially part of Logitech's public portfolio.

Logitech representatives states that feedback from G15 indicated that users didn’t use all the macros the G15 was capable of in its original iteration. Logitech claims the largest complaint on the original G15 was that the keyboard was just too big.

The G15 has changed significantly, most notably by shrinking in size. The shrink was accomplished by losing some of the programmable macro keys on each side of the original G15 keyboard.  The six keys on the new version have three shift states so the new G15 can save a total 18 total macros.

The other big change to the new G15 is moving from a flip up LCD display to one that is permanently fixed in place. The backlighting has also changed from a weak blue on the original to a brighter orange on the new G15. The LCD on the new G15 also uses the orange on black for much improved readability while gaming.

The really slick item that Logitech announced that I was able to get hands on time with at Quakecon is the G9 Laser Mouse. This mouse will be Logitech’s new top-of-the-line gaming mouse when it is available in September.

The G9 ships with two interchangeable grips, one called the Wide Load and the other called the Precision grip. The Wide Load grip is flatter and ideal for those who palm a mouse; the precision grip is textured and has raised areas more like the shape of the ergonomic mice we are used to seeing from Logitech.

The biggest feature of the G9 for gamers is likely to be the on-the-fly adjustable sensitivity that can be set to a low of 200 dpi up to a high of 3200 dpi. I am a big fan of high sensitivity for playing FPS games, and the 3200 dpi was great on the Quake Wars: EnemyTerritory demo Logitech was running.

The G9 also is weight adjustable like the G5 and allows the user to choose the color for the LED lights. If you have ever used the Revolution line of mice from Logitech you are familiar with the hyper-fast scroll wheel. The G9 uses the same scroll wheel as the Revolution series. The G9 set up is much the same as the Logitech VX Revolution notebook mouse.

Internal memory on the G9 allows you to save your profiles to the mouse and then use the mouse on computers without the need for drivers. Logitech representatives indicated the company would offer additional, different grips at some point and possible even grips customized for specific game titles, like the special edition G5 for Battlefield 2142.

I will second that motion, even though some of the "gaming" qualities of the mouse would be lost with wireless.

I've got a Logitech G7 which I've been using for over a year now, and it is wireless. Best gaming mouse I've ever had, and full of functionality. It can change sensitivity on the fly like the mouse in the article, with a LED read-out on the mouse that shows sensitivy level and battery life.

There are two battery packs, that are changeable in seconds, and last about 8 hours of hard gaming. One is always charging while the other is being used, so you never find yourself without a battery.

I do not miss moving a mouse cord around at all. I do miss the 2nd thumb button, that was not put on the G7 however.

This new mouse can't be any more power hungry than my G7, or at least not by a large amount, so I bet eventually they will put out this new mouse in a wireless version. I'll buy it for the 2nd mouse button.

Dose a wireless mouse such as the G7 support 1000HZ report rate? Probably not.

It's one of those things that you don't notice unless you're dedicated towards gaming. I find that wireless mice have a response time. When I was at a lan I tried out my friend's mouse and noticed it. I then combined it with a 25 ms delay LCD and nearly died (Actually, I did, several times, IN THE FACE.) Unless you play games like Counter Strike or Unreal Tournament, you're not likely to notice, but when you're relying on reflexes, it helps not to have an 8 ms delay over the enemy. I do, however, have a 20" wide screen monitor. It has 8 ms delay but I can't notice it. I decided to get an old 15" CRT down from the loft, but the gold fish bowl hurt me more than my enemies did, and didn't give me much of an advantage. Don't ask why I just told you that.

If you want to know what wireless feels like, it's like playing a game at 15 fps, where moving the mouse seems to take a while to move (with acceleration and deceleration along the way). At 60 FPS you move it it points straight to where you aimed. I'm sure that they're improving, but recharging times and delay means that I can't spend 8 hours solid gaming in front of my PC. For normal people, wireless will do. For me, Razer Copperhead all the way. It's uncomfortable, flashy and great for gaming.

i tried my friend's mx1000 several times and i find it unbearable: delays, innacuracy... everything... i used to have a logitech (almost generic) mouse which was damn good, i bought 3 of them (others excluded that went to my bro/friends). they all lasted me 4 years before one of them broke down recently and i decided to get a g3... fun fun fun (wanted a g5, but thought it wasn't worth it, considering the g3 has the same laser (i think?))

oh yeah, due to my mouse lasting 4 years, i was able to boycott optical mice (which i hated all the way through, however i think laser is more accurate as well as the fact that it was a year old (technology matured) so i was happy.

oh yeah, and one other little thing... moving from ball mouse to laser, i found that i had gotten used to picking up the ball mouse to such a minimal extent that when i moved to laser, it could half-track what was going on when the mouse was being carried to another point on the pad (just above the pad obviously) i'm still getting used to this though i'm almost there...

Get a proper wireless mouse,

Cheap tat wont respond well

Had a Logitech Mouseman worked great, then got a G7 when it finally started to get old and that is exactly the same as a wired mouse.

Wireless mice will work fine as long as the receivers work fast

Radio waves travel at the speed of light
Electrical impulses down a cable travel at the speed of light

I like all these dedicated toward gaming comments.

Like you have to sacrifice the blood of a virgin and burn a wireless mouse in front of a picture of that fatality guy then drink six cans of rockstar and smoke meth for an hour and your a dedicated PGL level gamer.

This story sounds like the biggest exageration I've ever heard. A wireless mouse is NOT going to make it feel like 15fps.. and an lcd monitor refresh rate isn't either, it will cause ghosting not cut your framerate in half.

Honestly if you have all these problems with a wireless mouse it's either a crap wireless mouse, or you have interference or something. A lan where you have 12 people with other wireless devices and maybe even a wireless access point is a perfect situation to get interference.

I hate wireless networking, but when I have my ps3 on upstaris on the wireless AP (this is temporary, it's getting cabled) I can tell the wireless router sitting on my desk is interfering with the mouse.

Under proper working conditions with a quality mouse there is NO lag, NO inacuracy, none whatsoever with my G7. Thats a 100% fact. Anything else is just fud.

Wahey, it's bash a gamer day! For your information, I have a job, go to college and play games as a hobby. I don't smoke meth (Actually, I don't smoke anything), I hardly ever drink and I certainly don't worship Fatal1ty. perhaps you haven't played competitive gaming, but I certainly have. None of the guys I've played against would dream of a wireless mouse and a majority of them wouldn't even recommend an LCD monitor. I'm not quite that extreme, but I see where they're getting at. I know this isn't a Gamer forum, and that's why I'm being rated down. However, I didn't flame or say anything other that I wouldn't recommend wireless for gaming. What I said about my experience with wireless mice is 100% true and if they've improved, then so be it. But I'd still rather have a Razer Copperhead.

Thats BS. I used to compete in a few FPS ladders both Q3 and RTCW. While I don't compete anymore due to getting fed up with clan politics I can still kick the ass of a large number of supposed "hardcore gamers". I've lost count of the servers I've been banned off of for "hacking" by skill-less admins etc.

And I do it all with my G7 and the MX1000 I had before that. My mouse has never lagged and swappin packs is never an issue.

as for the new G15, i have the original version and i like the macro buttons on that one better than the new one.

I disagree, wireless mice are annoying I hate rechargeing them and they don't track as well (you will not convince me otherwise). If you're a gamer, you do not have a wireless mouse. If you think you're a gamer and you have a wireless mouse, you're not.

I have a logitech mouse that had a cradle, it's easy enough to use, just drop it in. There isn't even any friction. That said, I use it for my home theater but it's nice. I suppose I should replace it with a Gyration.

I don't understand why lag is a problem with Bluetooth mice. Wii and PS3 controllers feel lagless, I don't know what they do that minimizes it but the mice don't.

If you are ignorant to a subject and post brash generalisations about what other people are or aren't, thinking you are more intelligent, you're not.

The G7 is a beautiful mouse for anyone games or not. Recharging is a non issue with swap packs, it tracks just fine. Probably a hell of a lot better than some of the 20 dollar peice of junk wired mice people have.

I've had the G7 for about a year. It is a really nice mouse, but I still miss my MX700. It took loads of abuse and I wore off the finish, but it was still working fine except for the fact that it wouldn't charge any more.

I miss the extra buttons of the MX700, I can't say that I ever use the buttons on the G7 to change the sensitivity on the fly (particularly as the software changes it automatically depending on the game loaded) and although there's always a second battery available, they don't seem to last very long. Yes, the battery is supposed to last 8 hours, and it probably gets a good 6, but the MX700 used a couple of cheap AAs and lasted at least twice as long.

Maybe I'll move back to wired.

Funny thing, talking about gaming, I used to own a MX700 and game with it and it was ok, but then I started gaming at my friends place (better internet connection) and I will only take my PC and borrow his 2$ PS2 Mouse and keyboard to game, and man let me tell you I kicked ass in FEAR, always first or second on the group on team deathmatch, still no body believes me, not even my friend that was sitting next to me and using a MX1000 and a Saitek KB, gaming is all about skills, not computer parts....Oh I miss those days....

Because I dont like a mouse cable getting snagged on something when I am trying to play then having to yank at it or pull it back to get more cable.

My desk is a huge mess as it is and one less cable strewn across it is great. The wireless receiver is tucked away near the tower where it's not an annoyance on the desk nor is it attached to an object I have to move constantly.

No there is no lag if you have a good mouse, that's just pure fud or lack of being informed. I can move my g7 as fast as a I please and there is no lag of any kind. Using some 30 dollar bluetooth mouse with AA batteries does not count as using a good wireless mouse.

Soon I will be looking for a wireless mouse and keyboard for my PS3, a VERY good reason to have wireless as I don't want a bunch of cables across the living room.

My G7 cost about the same thing as the last corded mouse I owned. You get what you pay for.

Durable? again fud, I've had 2 G7's neither have had durability problems, and I replaced the first cause I spilled coffee on it and wanted the carbon fiber colored edition anyway. Though I did disasemble and clean the old one and sell it to a friend.

Any more fud you need explained to you as to why it's BS?

anyone who games or really uses their computer and they use the mouse all day... in general dislikes wireless. I personally hate wireless mouses. Real uninterrupted gaming requires wired mouse and keyboard. When it comes down to it, you could lose a tournament because of one input failing. This is a proper revision of the G5 wired. thank you logitec!

RE: Wish it was wireless...

Think again. The G7 has hot swap lithium ion packs that last over 8 hrs each. and charge in about 2. that means you are never out of luck for power. Takes literaly 2 seconds to swap batteries and keep going.

I often played 12 hours a day on weekends in the days of mmog's with my g7. Never once a problem, and I love my wireless G7 to peices.

So as someone that uses their computer and mouse all day, I don't dislike wireless, I adore it.

Before you make a comment that 2.5 seconds is going to lose you your counterstrike tournament, change the battery before the match if your that worried. 2 hour charge time 8 hours plus use, with 2 packs, you do the math.

Don't bother trying to tell me you are playing an 8 hour match, and if you are, get professional help or something.

BOO ON THE ORANGE, BOO I SAY! I love my blue G15, goes with all the other blue lights on my computer.

By darkpaw on 8/4/2007 7:22:26 AM , Rating: 2
I do like the blue better as well, not just because it matches the computer, I just don't like orange in general.

By SirPsyko on 8/4/2007 1:12:39 PM , Rating: 2
How is less better?

They went from 18 macro keys to 6, effectively eliminating 2/3 of the usefulness. I have multiple keys bound to "say" various things in-game without having to stop and actually type the things out (VERY handy in CTF/Co-Op games where people aren't on Vent).

The LCD is no longer adjustable, which for me (being 6' 7" tall) is a MAJOR downgrade as I can't adjust it to my comfortable sitting position. If you've used the G15, you know that the viewing angle of the screen is limited and this has the potential to make it useless.

I'm not sure about the orange vs. blue. I'll have to see what it looks like in person. I can see it potentially being better given the higher contrast, but blue was "cool" and orange is "warm"... but the blue colors are used in most illuminated gaming keyboards I've seen (Saitek and Razer for example).

The G9 is fugly. But that doesn't mean it's not comfortable. I'm waiting to see one in person and test it out (as mentioned, I'm tall and I have large hands) to see if it fits as well as the MX700/MX1000/G5/G7 design.

I do like the idea of interchangable grips, but I'm wondering about the durability of them. If they're designed to be replaced, will Logitech make them "cheaply" so they can get residual income from replacing the grips?

By AraH on 8/4/2007 7:36:58 PM , Rating: 2
speaking of logitech keyboards and 'hitting the dust'... i have a 4-5 (if not a bit more) logitech keyboard that has taken full-blown punches from me (my brother is better then me at counter strike... as well as those times you want to hurt your computer)... not a single key has failed yet.

By Snuffalufagus on 8/3/2007 7:48:06 PM , Rating: 2
I'd love to have a G15 but the 'straight' keyboard isn't an option for everyone. If they'd release a 'split' version I'd get it in a second, everyone I know who has one claims it to be the best they've ever used.

By TejTrescent on 8/3/2007 11:19:35 PM , Rating: 3
What would be the point? These are gaming keyboards primarily--those aren't generally ergonomic, since it just really doesn't make sense to have a "wavy" WASD.

By semo on 8/4/2007 6:41:04 AM , Rating: 2
in terms of fps and wasd, split keyboards are not a problem. they are a problem with rts games because the keys are further apart than a normal keyboard. when playing warcraft i find my cheap straight keyboard much more comfortable than the ms 4000

RE: An ergonimic version of the G15 would be nice
By darkpaw on 8/4/2007 7:24:28 AM , Rating: 2
Ewww.. I hate these things. I know one person that actually uses one at work and I hate it whenever I'm at her computer. I tried using them years ago when they first came out and never liked them. There must be some people like yourself that do since they still make them, but its a very niche product.

By Snuffalufagus on 8/4/2007 2:01:50 PM , Rating: 2
I think it really comes down to what you are used to, almost to the degree that if you're truely left handed you prefer left handed mice. If you like one you most likely hate the other. I know what you mean about using other peoples keyboards, I see the pain others have when they use mine, and I have the same experience when I use other peoples inline keyboards, but I would say at my company it's nearly a 50/50 mix. I can use the inline keyboards but I'm a bit slower on them, the split design forces me to type correctly (I'm a pretty crappy typist, which really stands out at work), on the others I tend to let my fingers drift to hit keys they shouldn't. As for it being a niche product I don't think I agree, these are far more comfortable and a natural position for many people. For the other comments about it not being a good gaming keyboard, a good keyboard is the one that let's you work the fastest, to me it's an ergonomic one, the small split dosn't cause me any problems and I can react faster than I can on the other style.

I can understand why lefties get the shaft, though. They're 10% of the market. If even that, because most lefties I know still use the mouse with the right hand.

I think the more important issue is that they've ruled out people with eyes, cause that thing's damned ugly. Looks like an '80s mouse gone wrong.

I'm left handed. I use my mouse right handed on everything but gaming. For that I have to have it in my left hand.
A lot of mouses that are made for right handed people can be used with your left hand ok. This one appears to be useless that way. I've owned a total of two logitech rodents over the years. I buy mice all the time trying to find that perfect one. Since they refuse to make ambi mice, or lefty mice, and seem intent on making they even less lefty friendly, then I have no choice but to look elsewhere.

Good point. The LCD on the current G15 has such a poor viewing angle that if you're not looking at it straight on, it's totally washed out.

All of Logitech's "laser" mice are really just awful compared to their older MX engine. The MX510 and MX518 still blow the G5 away for tracking very fast movement. Set your sensitivity real low in any first person shooter and drag your mouse slowly across your entire mouse pad, then whip it back. The G5 will never make it all the way back because it loses tracking.

Not sure why...
By JonnyDough on 8/4/2007 7:30:43 AM , Rating: 2
everyone is getting low rankings as I agree with some of the "G7 sucks" posts, but here's my two cents:

I own the Logitech G7 gaming mouse, the G15 keyboard, and 2 Razer Copperhead mice (along with an older Logitech optical mouse and several ball mice). The G7 is too heavy, and requires battery changing far too often. It's bad for gaming in anything real time online (when you can't pause the game). It can't even compare to my Razer gaming mice and I hope the update fixes the issues the original G7 has, particularly with battery life. The G15 is great, but I wish it was more adjustable in terms of how you can adjust the angle of the board by raising/lowering the back. Also, the back lift supports on it lack rubber pads for anti-sliding. I find myself having to re-adjust the keyboard by sliding it towards me now and then. It would also be nice if the keyboard's software used even fewer resources, although it is by no means bad where it stands. However, in x64 bit Windows XP Pro x64 I've encountered some keyboard profiler software errors, particularly upon shutdown.

I also feel that a good gaming keyboard should be as ergonomically friendly as possible, and I know that most gamers aren't accustomed to having the keys laid out in an very slight upward swinging arc, but it would be nice to see more manufacturers do this to help minimize wrist strain.

RE: Not sure why...
By SavagePotato on 8/4/2007 12:10:04 PM , Rating: 2
How is the battery life to short? My G7 lasts like 8 hours, I swap the packs maybe once a day on busy use days. If you are finding it too short you most likely have defective packs.

As to ergonomics, It's all personal preference. I like a heavy mouse.

When it comes to keyboards I wont use anything that doesn't have a curved keypad. Many people I know hate them and won't use them.

The second edition carbon fiber colored G7 has shorter battery life if what I have read is correct because it never turns off the laser to save power. Then again thats Just what I have read.

It seems to me that Logitech is re-releasing their older models with improvements because their customers are complaining about what's missing or wrong with them. Like the G5 mouse, the G15 keyboard looks slightly different from it's predecessor (whether or not there is improvement is someone testing the products). As for the G9 mouse, it looks very much like the VX Revolution except more buttons and add-ons. I'm not sure if this is the gaming mouse, but at least Logitech knows how to make gaming mice. $100 is too much for a mouse that is just wired, but based on the specs let's hope it's not another FUD. I have a G7 mouse and it works great, but the battery life is just awful (runs out of juice in 2 1/2 hours and takes 8 hours to recharge: defective batteries)and interference from my router and phone due to 2.4GHz broadcasting signals. I was thinking about getting a Dinovo Edge keyboard because it works with my PC and PS3, but the price is too expensive unless it is at eBay. I wouldn't mind a Razer gaming mouse since it does look cool and works really well since it is wired.

I have a MX518 for ages now and it still rocks
i do hate it when my cable get stuck while gaming but don't dare to go for wireless in gaming
only thing i don't hate and i'm affraid the new G9 will have the same problem:
the sensitivity buttons are to easy to press on while gaming
try playing ut2k4 get killed and suddenly you play at the highest setting, that 1sec to set you back to normal setting can cost you a frag
so i'm hoping they place the sensitivity buttons where you can not accidently touch them or maybe we could lock them?
Anyone else has this problem?

I'm sold. The only down side to Logitech products I've ever had is with setpoint software causing random errors and quirks.

From sounds of G9 it will be plug & play, but even remember all the amazing customizing that setpoint allows. Sounds like a winner to me!

improvement? i think not

i still think that logitech mouse design reached its apogee with the MX5xx line, and later with the wireless MX1000 (which i'm lucky enough to have).

as a gamer i find the newer mice unappealing; they look uncomfortable and their button placement seems a bit strange.

as for keyboards, i like it as simple as possible, without media buttons that are somehow supposed to either enhance my quality of life or make me cool, but instead just waste space on my desk.

so i hope some day a company will come out with a quality board that has just the standard windows layout and is wireless...

and yet...

G15

I've got a G15 keyboard here, and I really don't see anything that was REALLY wrong with the older model. I liked the blue lcd screen, and can't really comment on the flip up part of it, as my is always up. I use the macro keys on occasion, and while its true that I don't use ALL of them, I appreciate that they're on the keyboard if I *need* them.

This newer model smells like a cost cutting measure to me, with an uglier color lcd and backlit keys, and FEWER macro keys. Glad I bought mine when I did. I AM curious if future apps for the screen will be backwards compatible with the old model. Hmmm.

Just my 2 cents. ;)

As title... in the Logitech mouse review AT mentioned they'd be reviewing a Razor mouse to compare it with... http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=3049...

Is that review about ready yet?

Give this a new name like G16 so when people try to purchase them from online retailers they do not get the older keybaord. The same crap happened with the upgraded g5 which I liked and had to buy from best buy cause it was the only place I could see it in person and know I was getting the right product.

I love the internal memory on this G9 hopefully the side scroll will work without drivers and hopefully mouse 3 does not suck as it does on the g5.
