Lenovo's new servers start at under $900
Lenovo
is mostly known for its lineup of laptop and desktop computers. The
company also makes a line of server systems for businesses called the
ThinkServer. Lenovo has announced new ThinkServer machines today that
start at a relatively low price.
The new ThinkServers include
the RD230, RD240, and TD230 with a starting price of under $900.
These machines are Lenovo's entry into the value dual processor
server market. Despite the low starting price, the servers have many
of the features expected in servers today.
The features
include RAID for data protection on the RD230, web-enabled remote
management tools, hot swappable HDDs, and a DVD writer. The servers
use the Intel Xeon 5500 series and 5600 series processors and can
operate at up to 60% faster than legacy servers. The TD230 server is
EnergyStar for Servers 1.0 certified and promises quiet
operation.
“These new ThinkServers are changing the model in
the value server market,” said Tom Ribble, director, ThinkServer
Product Marketing, Lenovo. “Instead of offering customers expensive
add-ons, we built in manageability and performance features, like
remote management and hot swappable drives, that growing businesses
need. And we did this while keeping prices extremely
affordable.”
The ThinkServer RD230 will sell for $999, the
RD240 will start at $1399, and the TD230 starts at $829. All of the
new servers are available immediately through Lenovo business
partners. The base processor in the TD230 is an Intel Xeon E5503 and
it is a tower server. The RD230 is a 1U rack mount and the RD240 is a
2U rack mount.
