Lenovo adds a new model to its 3000 Series

Lenovo is adding dual-core support to its new lineup of notebook computers. The company has already introduced the C100 series notebooks which feature Celeron-M and Pentium-M processors. They are aimed at the entry-level market. The new N100 notebooks, however, can be equipped with Intel's Core Solo or Core Duo processors and are aimed at business professionals.

We designed the Lenovo 3000 N100 with mobile small business customers in mind, understanding their need for a powerful, yet easy-to-use notebook," said Marc Godin, vice president of worldwide marketing, Lenovo's notebook business unit. "With the N100, we wanted to create a notebook that helps make our customers work more efficiently and effectively. The N100's widescreen display, dual-core processor and Lenovo Care tools help create a powerful, worry-free computing experience.

The N100 weighs in at 5.6 pounds and can be equipped with a 14.1" (1280x768) or 15.4" widescreen (1280x800, 1,680x1,050) display. Graphics options include the integrated Intel GMA950 and NVIDIA's GeForce Go 7300. The N100 features 802.11a/b/g support, 10/100 Ethernet, 4-in-1 multi-card reader, four USB ports, FireWire, S-Video and has options for Bluetooth, integrated webcam and a fingerprint reader.

The N100 will be available on March 28th with a starting price of $999. For those of you eager to see the N100 in action, you can see CNET's review complete with a video and additional pictures here. They rated their $1,400 1.83GHz Core Duo model 6.7 out of 10.

Lenovo purchased the PC division of IBM. Quality so far has been as good as IBMs.

calling Lenovo/IBM notebooks crap shows quite a bit of ignorance. their notebook line provides one of the best solutions on the market. sure they cost much, but you get what you pay for.

Agreed. My IBM branded notebooks were always my favorites. I haven't tried a Lenovo yet, but here's hoping they keep the quality up.

you're basing your opinion in the computer world off something in 2001? Well hell, 3dfx must be top of the heap then hey?

On a side note, even in 2001 IBMs were the cream of the crop.

Yeah, it was the IBM 701 series (I think it came in C, CS and CX models). I never actually saw one but heard great things about them. I was hoping to maybe someday pick one up for a play and collector's value.

To be honest, whilst I have nothing against Lenovo, these actual Lenovo branded machines don't have the IBM flair the old ones did, and I think that's where they're gonna lose it. I know it's entry-level but if they don't replace the IBM T series with something equally good then I won't get another machine from them. At the moment I'm using one an IBM T41p, and I think many of you will agree that the IBM T4x series has somewhat of a legendary status in the laptop world.

I take it you haven't seen Lenovo's new T6x series with Core Duo processors? Or their widescreen Thinkpad Z series?

Either way, Lenovo will have to pull something out of their sleeve to compete with Sony's SZ series at the high-end. The new Z's and T's come with integrated graphics unless you upgrade the screen size--the Sony comes with integrated AND GeForce Go 7500 and lets you choose one by flipping a switch. That's what I want!!

Yes, I have heard of and seen pictures of both. I said when they replace them - i.e. when they are no longer allowed to use the IBM ThinkPad branding.

I'm not buying another Sony after the fiasco with a £220 battery replacement for my Sony TR1. If Sonys work they are great, if they don't, good luck getting them fixed... also it's a GeForce Go 7400 (which is based on the 7300).

Still using my ThinkPad from 2001 - it's a little slow relative to other machines I have, but it's still running. I think the quality is very good, and it is built to be very rugged. I use it nearly every day.

If you dislike products from China, good luck buying anything. You better look at the undersides of many of the products in your house and when you're out shopping. Products from China are nearly impossible to avoid.

Anyway, we're not at war with China, so chill out. Sure, there is a lot of rhertoric (on both sides), and they have a "different approach" than most Western governments, but frankly, it is up to them to decide how to live.

That said, of course I don't condone their human rights violations and apparent military objectives, if reports of those (besides the obvious) are true.

There is, however, a difference between a Chinese company, and a state-owned Chinese company. Lenovo is 60% owned by Legend, which in turn is 65% owned by the Chinese government. Although that's only a 40% share overall, the chain gives them 100% control of Lenovo.

Well, buying -any- Chinese product is a smal amount of support for the Chinese government; they'll receive money indirectly through tax dollars and other sources. But buying Lenovo funds them directly, and to a significantly larger degree. So there's definitely a distinction there.

There are plenty of people that boycott products for all sorts of inane reasons. If someone wants to boycott Lenovo, they at least have a valid motivation for it.

I'd hardly call China a "little girl". Mao killed far more civilians than Hitler, Stalin, Pol Pot, and Idi Amin combined. Thirty million dead in the "Great Leap Forward", ten million in his "Cultural Revolution", another twenty million in Laogai Death Camps. I won't even count the millions killed in the Chinese Civil War itself, or the Communist led Democides.

And if you think the "Cold War" didn't include China against the US as well, you don't know your history very well.

If anyone is brainwashed, it would appear to be you. Masher quoted simple facts, not opinions, with regard to the number of civilians killed during the aforementioned events (Great Leap Forward, Cultural Revolution, etc.). How is that brainwashing? What is wrong with pointing out a fact?

I recommend you reevaluate your approach to this particular aspect of debate. Personally I choose not to boycott Chinese products at this tim, because I believe the more we trade with them, and the more their economy becomes dependent upon exporting goods to ours, the less likely they are to nuke us, ever.

That said, they need to start opening their markets to our export markets. Their record in that record is horrendous, with maybe the exception of Boeing commercial airplanes.

Good advice, why not follow it? You're confused over which message my reply addressed. It was your post of, "You must be too young to have experienced the cold war. China is a little girl on the block compared to the former USSR."

China was a PART of the Cold War. And a very large part at that. It wasn't simply between the US and the USSR. The latter may have had the nuclear weapons, but China had the uncounted millions of soldiers to throw at us, just as they did in the Korean War.

Today China has the nuclear weapons AND the massive army. It also has the fastest-growing military of any nation in the world. The US and most other nations shrunk their arsenals at the end of the Cold War...China has been expanding theirs at a truly alarming pace.

If their government is willing to kill 70 million of their OWN people to meet an end, do you think they'd hesitate at the citizens of another nation?

No, I know which article you were responding to.

A few points to support my statement:

USSR had a larger miltary machine than the USA in 1980. China is nowhere near that of the USA's military machine.

An average USA citizen can visit or work in China and an average Chinese citizen can visit or work in the USA. (I happen to be good friends with one) In 1980, Americans couldn't visit USSR and USSR couldn't visit the USA without special cirmcumstances. (Usually sports)

China & the USSR had never been very good friends themselves. It was kind of like our relationship with France. USSR would help the Chinese in any war against us but there is no way they would have ever helped Russia in a war against the USA.

IBM thinkpad series were manufactured by LG in S Korea for IBM.The moment IBM sold off its PC division to Lenovo,LG put out its laptop into the market.They built upon & used their expertise & experience manufacturing IBM thinkpads , to launch their own version into the market.Its rather strange how IBM could so easily sell off its PC division-they are not so dumb.The moment IBM moved out, thinkpad ratings fell- whats cooking at IBM?As for lenovo they are far behind in quality compared to Sony laptops.Lenovo lacks the punch & power of IBM.

We're old school.... we run IBM desktops and laptops for about 95% of our business users.

This model is interesting, but because no trackpoint its a no-go.

Touch-pad? my SMS shows over 75% have choosen to disable it....that right there kills this laptop model far as usability.

My $.02... tsk tsk lenovo...
