Lenovo A600 All-in-One  (Source: Lenovo)
Lenovo A600 has one of the coolest remote controls ever on a all-in-one PC

Desktop computers were finally outpace by laptops recently showing that most users want a small, portable machine rather than a bulky desktop. Still some users want desktop computers, yet many don’t want a bulky multi-piece traditional PC.

For this type of user, Lenovo has announced its new IdeaCenter A600 all-in-one desktop computer. Lenovo claims that the A600 is one of the thinnest all-in-one machines to ever ship at only 1-inch thick at its thinnest point.

The machine offers a 21.5-inch frameless screen that has a resolution of 1920x1080 with a 16:9 aspect ratio. The integrated sound system offers Dolby Home Theater sound and has a built-in sub-woofer. The high screen resolution is ideal for the available Blu-ray player option and an optional digital TV tuner is available for watching TV.

Lenovo includes an interesting remote control that not only controls media functions from across the room, but it doubles as a motion sensitive game controller allowing gamers to play from the couch with the remote only. The remote also functions as a VOIP handset and an air mouse.

The machine offers Intel Pentium Dual Core and Core 2 Duo mobile processors and uses DDR 3 RAM form 1GB to 4GB. Storage space is up to 1TB and the integrated graphics support DX10. Buyers can option the machine with discrete ATI graphics cards as well.

Lenovo says the machine will start at $999, but if you option the rig with Blu-ray, discrete graphics and lots of storage the price will go north of starting price very quickly.

Lenovo today also introduced the massive W700ds notebook with dual displays.

And I'm sure the sound from those tiny, thin speakers is awesome.

agreed, a slot for sound card would be nice

you don't need a discrete sound card to plug in extra speakers.
and it is ridiculous how many people think like you and imagine that there would be a difference in sound quality between discrete and integrated, even when they are using digital outputs.

But perhaps this computer/TV system is placed in a dorm room with limited space where a student CAN'T fit a 60" LCD screen - no matter how thin it is.

back in the OLD days like the 70s, a 19" color TV was typical for most people.

People also weren't trying to watch high definition content on them. You'd need to sit awfully close to the screen to see the detail.

Even in a dorm room a 27-32" type TV will fit, and provide a far better movie/gaming experience, especially if the roommate wants to watch as well.

I hope students aren't so dumb to buy an all-in-one system just because it looks better.
Buying the monitor and the pc separately is better, when this pc will be old the monitor will be still good maybe, but you'll have to get a new one.

Yes, in fact, I do want to watch blu-ray movies on my ultrasharp 20" panel instead of my 480p CRT television. Of course, having a blue ray drive would probably help that one a bit. As for the speakers, if they bother you get your own; my Klipsch Promedia seem to do fine with any movie I can throw at them...

I would just watch normal DVDs considering you're not going to be able to see the detail on that small a screen unless you're sitting at your computer desk watching it.

Exactly - totally pointless. Of course as people below point out you CAN watch BluRay on the screen and you CAN add speakers, but both of those things sort of defeat the purpose of a functional all-in-one.

I want the guys who designed the iPhone's perfect interface to turn their attention from 3.5" screens to 50" screens. I'd love an OS designed from the ground up to work on big TVs. I have my 1080p 47" LCD hooked up as a second PC display, and it's wonderful for downloaded/streaming video, but terrible for general computing.

Should say from...

Btw, while I like this design, I'd like it much more if they could make it with a 28 inch screen @ 1920x1200 px.

ATM I've a Viewsonic 22" and I whiling to change it for a 32" 1080p... as soon as I could get it cheap ;)

Now the PC business is trying to get into the ALL-IN-ONE design. Some are cool, like this Lenovo, some are quite junky such as many of the Gateway designs.

This one is still quite different...

Looking at its prototype and drawings, it would be thinner and bigger by todays standards, but its options seems interesting.

Dual monitors?

Uh, why not just spend the extra $150 and get a 19" wide screen. I'd be willing to schlep the extra pounds around to save a thousand or more.

Ha. Ha ha ha. Funny. Do you come up with these clever comments on your own?
