LG Electronics ups resolution and upgrades hard drives for DVRs in LCD TVs

LG Electronics, a leader in LCD TVs and monitors, announced a line of flat-panel LCD TVs with built-in DVR functionality, upgraded hard drive capacities and more.

LG Electronics' previous line of high definition LCD TVs also featured a hard disk drive based DVR system with a capacity of 160GB. This year's models will feature an upgraded 250GB hard drive for up to 13 hours of high definition recording.

The LG 47LB1DR is a 47-inch model which features a 'full HD' 1080p resolution, 5000:1 contrast ratio and a 6ms response time. Last year's models featured a 720p high-definition resolution which will still be enough for today's high-definition broadcasts.

There has been no pricing information released yet but it is expected that LG's new line of LCD Televisions will be available in time for this year's World Cup. That's soccer for those of you who don't know. The catch is this line will probably only see the light of day in select eastern markets for now.

A hard drive in a tv?

I prefer that these two devices remain separate. I would think that the television would outlast the hard drive. And then you have a dead unit in the other working unit. Smart. It's like the dvd player in the television. How long do dvd players last and how long do televisions last (on average)? If kept seperate you can replace one when it goes and with the latest tech available at the time of purchase.

Agreed!

The price tag and combined components on this beast isn't worth it, IMHO. Plus, nothing can touch the elegance of my Panasonic 50" plasma (TH-50PHD8UK). Sure, it's not 1080p, but I'm not too worried. She's a sexy biatch.

I have a TH-50PHD8UK also and I love it too! If you wanted to add a computer/HD to it you only need to buy the add on cards. But like other posters said it's better to keep those things seperate - and I agree.

Geez! There are repair shops to fix or replace either the dvr or the tv. Are you so addicted to television that you could not live without your set for up to 30 days? If so, you really should seek counseling.

I somewhat disagree, I think a Slim TV with a Hard drive would be a decent combo, especially if this can hook up via usb to a pc to dump the load..or better yet if it had a DVD-RW built into to make things tangible, certainly could shift me away from the VCR.

True, the hard drive may not last 10 years like the typical television...but, we all know that hard drives are more easily replaceable, than say..fixing a VCR head, or a DVD player built into the body(making it irreplaceable to the common consumer)

DVR for any source?

I would imagine that a TV-based DVR would be limited by HDCP content protection for digital HD sources, but what about DVDs? Would it be possible to watch a DVD movie while 'recording' to the TV's hard drive, and then play it back after you've returned the movie to Blockbuster/Netflix?
