Jack Thompson looking to help EA takeover his longtime opponent

Florida attorney Jack Thompson has long been outspoken against many of Take-Two Interactive games, mostly those from the Grand Theft Auto franchise. In a rather peculiar turn of events, Thompson is offering his help to Electronic Arts in its hopes of acquiring Take-Two.

In a letter copied to Game Politics, Jack Thompson detailed his intentions to help EA’s business matters in hopes of getting rid of current Take-Two Interactive chief Strauss Zelnick.

“I am delighted to work with Electronic Arts to evict the Zelnick Trojan Horse from within Take-Two’s corporate walls,” wrote Thompson. “In doing so, I can get the new Take-Two into the clear as to the trouble I and others can send its way.”

Thompson continues by saying that the current Take-Two leadership is the true thorn in the publisher’s side. “Zelnick is the source of trouble headed Take-Two’s way, not I, and EA can make the case, with my help, that such trouble can be avoided,” he added.

As strange as it may be for Thompson to help EA acquire a company that he has been constantly at odds with, the lawyer stands to profit should an acquisition take place. During late 2005, Thompson declared that he had purchased shares of Take-Two Interactive presumably for the right to attend the game publisher’s shareholder meetings.

If EA is offering the “high premium” that it claims to be, any shareholder of Take-Two stock could benefit from the immediate purchase.

Thompson also has a storied history with the current management team at Take-Two – including Strauss Zelnick, the man he labeled as “the source of trouble.” Thompson may be joining EA only as they both view Take-Two as a target.

Last March, Take-Two sued Thompson for his attempts at restricting the first amendment rights of the game maker. The two parties eventually reached a settlement that would put distance between Take-Two and Thompson. Currently, Thompson is wrestling with a court order that demands that he proves by March 5 that he is not abusing the legal system for his own personal agenda.

I don't think EA taking over Take-Two would be a good thing...

I can't speak on whether a merger or takeover would be a good thing or not, guess that just depends on your point of view. I'm sure EA has the resources to make the products from Take 2 profitable. I'm reading this article though and how many explicitives could you use to describe this attorney and does he realize or care the rut he's sticking himself into. lol I think the man needs a little mental help, but then that's just my opinion.

The problem with EA is they tend to ruin game series they take over. Take Sim City for example. Societies was garbage as they tried to increasingly merge the Sims into it. For them, it's all about volume over quality. Producing a game as quickly as possible to sell as many as quickly as possible. Quality is sacrificed and the game doesn't sell as well as it should because of poor reviews.

Anyway, there's my EA rant. I think Jack Thompson knows this and he's hoping EA taking over Take-Two will result down in EA typically watering down their titles. I find it a curious relationship though. Isn't this what's gotten Jack in trouble with the Florida courts? I think Jackie is trying to catch up to Johnny Cochran's record for sleaze. I think EA would be shooting themselves in the foot by getting in league with that man. I can't honestly see them working with Jack.
A little off topic but am I the only one who thinks the Bully kid looks like Bobby Hill?

Please do not refer to that worthless piece of software as part of the great Sim City series. It's like Rocky 5, it never happened.

No as the previous poster stated it's what EA would do to the franchise like they do with their sports programs every year.

Same game a handful of new features over the previous year but never quite as satisfying as the original release for the particular console.

This is what happens when you let suited executives that only care about numbers make the design/direction decisions of a game versus how it was in the old days, when we had a talented/compassionate/visionary designer calling the shots.

There are exceptions to that rule of course, but generally the rocks stars of the past such as Sid Meier, Richard Garriott, Chris Roberts, Roberta Williams, Al Lowe, Andy Hollis, Gilman Louie etc. etc. no longer exist nor are being created. It is all about numbers first, what will let us shovel the most crack in the kids hands the fastest and what will give us maximum return profits for the product before it implodes (at least at EA).

EA destroys everything it touches. What about Origin? Wing Commander, Ultima... gone - Garriot out the door (his new title doesn't look so hot to be fair - but it is an MMO :( ). Westwood - gone. They shovel crap out the door now. Novalogic - gone. They weren't superb a-listers but they weren't poo-listers either. Maxis - obliterated. DICE - pile of stinkyness now.

The list goes on. They grab the lamb, sacrifice it quickly, the blood flows down the altar and into the garden of the world to be quickly gobbled up by the unsuspecting grubs, worms and carrion whom consume all that flow forth from the palace of EA the all-great and divine. Once the blood runs out, the lamb is tossed quickly to the side and the maggots consume the remaining flesh as it dries up and is blown forth with dusty abandon loftily in the air to no longer exist in any glory like it once had in fleeting time.

They grew from a humble shepherd to a maddened, bloodthirsty Mayan icon intent on bloodlust and conquest. Nothing will stand in their way.

But they don't care - there is always another lamb to sacrifice. I don't remember a single in-house title produced by EA since... when? i688 attack sub or Chuck Yeager's AFT that was worth two hoots. BF 1942? Nope, they bought DICE and the series is poo now also. EA is BAD for gaming. I'd go so far to say they are one of the reasons PC Gamers have very little to choose from.

Perhaps they should change their slogan to: "EA, we are your god!" because they are definately hellbent on that.

Jack Thomson? I'm not suprised. It is almost fitting. Now, will EA go to bed with him. Much like many thieves, they _will_, but only for as long as it takes for EA to acquire their next lamb. As soon as that is done - who knows? They'll more than likely kick him to the side.

It is hard to tell though as you are dealing with deamon spawn. Two devils making a deal? Very much so. It is fitting.

I'm still boycotting EA because they bought the exclusive NFL gaming rights. EA couldn't stand it that a better, cheaper product was on the market. They couldn't beat NFL 2Kx, so they destroyed it. Ever since then, I have not bought another EA game. Nor do I plan to.

It is poetic however. EA is just like John Madden, who they use for their football games. Both offer nothing insightful or good, yet somehow both are at the top of their fields.

Of course, I partially blame the NFL. I hate exclusive right contracts. If I had my way, I'd ban them. Monopolies are never good. Why should EA try to improve their football games now? They can just put new Madden sounds, new rosters, and a new over hyped feature that is really nothing at all then charge $50 for it. The same goes for DirecTV and football.

It is high time we go Ma Bell on EA. The feds split up AT&T, it is time the feds split up EA.

Their slogan should be "EA Sports ... you don't have a choice".

I'm not sure if there is anything worth splitting out of EA. Well, Bioware - before their soul is drained. Other than that the festering mess is far too rancid to be redeemed. I fear that if a split were to occur the brands perhaps would be squandered much as the graven Atari which is a shadow of its former glory. Now it is just a name and nothing more.

The buying of the NFL rights was the last straw - but you must also remember the NFL itself has become a corrupt, power happy organization. The greed is strong there - just look at their threats against public gatherings in private establishments to watch the SuperBowl.

EA is the icon of shame in videogames currently.

Haha at the you don't have a choice - isn't that the truth! :( Just give me some Speedball or Blades of Steel and I'm happy.

(Puts on his best J. Madden voice)

You see... this game has come down to two players playing the pitch and catch game. You got your quarterback on this side of the screen, then you have your wide receiver here. Over here is an oreo and then they throw to... BOOM tough actin' tinactin. And then you got your offensive line right here. But you have the Linebacker and the ACE hardware man right next to this mayonaise stain.

...

And that is how the game of football is played. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to use the men's room.

*sigh* John Madden. That guy kills me.

Where does this head to a discussion of how big companies are evil? If you have money invested in a fund that owns EA, EA makes money for you. This is why you invested with them. If you didn't, too bad.

If EA makes enough bad titles, hopefully the market will work and EA will be on the ropes. If you think you can do better than EA, open your own company. Or send your resume over to Microsoft and address this business opportunity with them.

It never is a good thing when EA takes over any games. Just look at Command and Conquer and look how they trashed that game. It started out good before EA bought the company out that made C&C. Then when they took over they made it into crap, for example: C&C Renegade, C&C Zero Hour. I thought C&C Zero Hour was such a bizarre mix of C&C and Empire Earth that it disgusted me! Same thing with The Sims. I was happy with the old version.

I don't know about you guys but I don't want this at all. Take Two owns 2k Sports, you know the ones who make the best bball game out there, the NBA 2k series, & with no comp we know what crap EA will continue to release. I haven't liked NBA LIVE since the Dreamcast, & now if EA buys Take two, we all know they will kill off NBA 2k series just cause they have made a better product than them for years now.

While I understand that new small development studios will rise in place of others that are acquired by companies such as EA, I can't help but feel a little saddened by a single company buying all of the developers I've grown to love.

However, I am pleased to say that EA has been improving over the years and I do look forward to see the new companies that rise in place of the old.

i hope EA distances itself from jack thompson. i already have difficulty deciding to buy a new game from them because of all the crap they have done in the past, and because of how they like to treat paying customers. i really hope that they will release a statement saying that they want nothing to do with thompson, or his insane agenda. if they don't then websites such as this one (and many others), should publicise that they are in league with him so that people will boycott them.

Great article here, Marcus. Y'know, I saw an article a few months ago in Game Informer about how politics are starting to seep into games. We've already seen in happen with advertising - and I won't start that debate, but I think it's important to realize that people like Jack Thompson are probably only going to become more prevalent as this trend continues.

As gamers, our voice is generally only backed up with our wallets. These guys are taking it up a notch in the name of being PC - whether you agree or disagree with it, I think there's going to come a day where gamers have to do more to protect their hobby than just make purchase decisions.
