Interpol released these images to enlist public assistance in tracking down this unidentified man.  (Source: Interpol)
Authorities post his face publicly and receive a torrent of replies

A man suspected of sexually abusing children was publicly unmasked last Monday when Interpol successfully unscrambled images of his face. Crops of the scrambled and unscrambled images were posted to Interpol’s website, along with a public plea for help, as all police efforts at identifying him thus far have failed.

Working from the original images found on the internet, specialists from the Bundeskriminalamt, or Germany’s Federal Criminal Police Office were able to successfully reverse what appears to be Photoshop’s twirl distortion tool, using unspecified methods. “Techniques are always developing. What is impossible today is possible tomorrow,” said Anders Persson, the Swedish police officer in charge of overseeing Interpol’s child abuse image database.

The images, which were taken in Cambodia and Vietnam sometime during 2002 and 2003, have been making the rounds around the internet underground in a series of about 200 images depicting the abuse of 12 young boys, whose ages range from six to the early teens.

Persson was initially hesitant to release the photos publicly, as it would signal to criminals that police forces were capable of unblurring images. Outweighing that consideration, however, was his interest in protecting other children from predators. “It was a long discussion,” said Persson, “… we have exhausted all possibilities within [the] police to find this man … this was the last step.”

For decades the scrambling of images – usually with a mosaic or blur filter – has been common practice in protecting private information and safeguarding the identities of publicly pictured individuals. In an article titled “Why Blurring Sensitive Information is a Bad Idea,” Dheera Venkatraman outlines the method for a possible attack against scrambled images using a technique similar to rainbow table attacks that are used against one-way scrambled hashes frequently used for storing passwords. His conclusion: “don’t blur your images!”

Interpol received over 200 messages in the first 12 hours after releasing images of the man’s face. “We have a lot of responses and they are coming from all over the world,” said Persson, with some messages including detailed information that includes names and addresses.

chopping block

it is times like this when I feel it is best to castrate his little dinky (and his hands if needed)

I'm more for shooting them. Hard to be a repeat offender then. You can still molest someone when you're castrated. Your boys just aren't there anymore.

You have to do what Man on Fire does. Cut each one of their fingers off, one at a time. Then their toes. Then castrate them. Then shoot them. And then let their car roll off a cliff and explode. Maximum pain before death is what these people deserve.

That is so cool. I wish they could have held back that they unblurred the pictures though - might have nailed a few more of the bastards.

I suppose they could have drawn up a black-and-white police artist sketch based on the photo. That would have been the safer route.

By Samus on 10/10/2007 5:50:09 AM , Rating: 2
that's exactly what i'm thinking. why didn't they just sketch mock-up's?

now these guys are probably just going to use black blocks over their heads instead of a filter to remove their identity.

Pedophiles will probably stop using blurring as technique to mask their ID in the future. However, I'm sure Interpol has plenty of old pictures waiting to get this magic treatment. Seeing how other inmates treat those "people", I hope they will build a special prison for them. Not.

Torrent expression?

Perhaps it's just me but I haven't heard that expression before. Does it have something to do with torrents or is it just an old expression not commonly used?

You've never heard of a torrential downpour? The word torrent existed long before bittorrent.

Err great job PD?
By Acanthus on 10/10/2007 6:44:59 AM , Rating: 5
The guy did a horrible job blurring himself... He used one brush that swirled clockwise, im sure the PD just used the same approximation of the same brush to undo it.

I mean it's nice that this guy was stupid, but had he just painted over it with a black square or used a combination of filters it wouldve been impossible to undo.

Thank goodness most criminals are stupid.

I dont think there is a cure and I dont think we need to study them to find out why so Im all for just shooting them.

On dateline NBC the one guy was caught twice which means the system obviously didnt deter him from being a repeat offender.

Same treatment

Hope they catch this f*** soon and send him to a nice jail with some lonely guys for a long time. There are no words to describe how vile these sorts of scum are. Better still, they should be shot on the spot.

Your jail scenario may be a deterrent for us, but for sickos like this, probably not. Your second suggestion has more merit.

Use Photoshop's Twirl Filter...
By ietrinidad on 10/10/2007 10:55:04 AM , Rating: 2
To undo the twirl present in the image, determining the correct amount is just the key, and then cleaning up the image.

You can test this idea by taking an image of a pet, or yourself, and then applying the Twirl Filter at -700. Save the image, and then repeat it, but this time set the Twirl Filter at 700. Notice that some parts of the image remain grainy, and that's to be expected. You can use Gaussian Blur to soften noise.

Misleading credit
By Believer on 10/11/2007 6:17:52 AM , Rating: 2
How come Interpol got credit for unblurring the image when that clearly wasn't the case? They only help host and distribute it.

Seriously, what's with these people? Obviously they didn't get my point, which was this is the one and only time they'll be able to use a modified photo to catch a criminal. I figured intelligent people were the sort who read dailytech, but apparently I was mistaken, and should have spelled it out for them.

But you just did what I predicted you would; come up with a explanation on your poor choice of sarcasim and try to blame others for their "misinterpetation."

Its not a personal attack on you, but there are some things in life that are off limits when it comes to sarcasm... one of them is child molestation.

We all know that your statement is not true "Obviously they didn't get my point, which was this is the one and only time they'll be able to use a modified photo to catch a criminal." The good guys are getting better at every day at catching the child molesters. Even the good guys are catching the assumed good guys in that case of the Federal Prosecutor who just off'd himself.

I feel his sarcasm was not pointed toward child molestation directly. It was pointed more towards dumb criminals who post pics of themselves doing illegal activities(he generalized this situation). Besides I do not consider this article really that great overall for law enforcement. You are telling me Interpool just now thought about this??? Makes me go "WTF Mate!" Seriously lets drop this bs. Bad guy caught being stupid, cheers!

It doesn't seem that mcmilljb misinterpreted my point.

Wow, didn't check this article in a while, amazing.

Didn't realize so many DTers condoned child-pornography (at least that's how Polynikes comment came off to me).

But I'm glad to see at least a few others here came away with the same impression I did.

I basically restated his words as an email to a fictitious address at interpol (and just to clarify for some of you idiots, no I didn't actually send it anywhere).

quote:
Pedosexuals like myself have been around since the beginning of mankind and earlier than that

Yes, they have, but they never get any demographic traction because people kept killing them off.

quote:
Personally, I was having ... when I was 3 ...

I don't believe this. I have three theories:

1 When you hit 7, your uncle upgraded to your little brother. You felt abandoned and had only a little sister to console you.
2 In the womb, you mistook the gynaecologist's examination for sexual relations originating from your mother. Everything went downhill from there.
3 You are a mutation. Your father stole radio-active waste material from the plant to sell as scrap. One of the sperm cells came out with three flagella. Your egg-part never had a change.

Am I close?

quote:
No, it is just going to force pedosexuals underground,

This is a popular argument for the unpopular but the good news is that the forces of economics are at work here. If the supply of children stays the same and the cost goes up, the demand goes down.

quote:
start pushing more responsibility on the children and telling them that their bodies are their own and that they have the right to decide for THEMSELVES

So how do you push more responsibility to a baby girl at birth? You know, those ones that you are usually attracted to.

quote:
The only thing you "kill 'em all!" people are doing is

... decreasing the demand by increasing the cost.

Another perspective :
Did you know that the Portuguese Man O' War is a colony of specialised organisms? If one of the individual organisms threaten the long term survival of the bluebottle, there are response mechanisms that deal with this. Maybe humans are also acting as parts of a bigger organism.
But I'm no threat to the human species!
Well, the organism and the time-line is scaled up, but the violent responses here should tell you something. If you see a strange spot on a jellyfish and other jelly cells attacking it, it probably is because the spot is bad for the jelly.

Sorry for the coherent response, it's because I don't have a baby girl. I just hope that I do my civic duty if ever I get unrestricted access to one of you.

Holy crap there is something seriously wrong with you. Looking at some of your previous posts you have mentioned your taste for porn (now we all know it is child porn), and also for manga (probably the really fucked up stuff involving schoolgirls and tentacles and so on). So I would really suggest you get some help. And by help, I mean end your own life.
