NASA has partnered with the Internet Archive in an effort to
post
an archive of images, film and video footage on the internet for the first
time. NASA has an extensive data catalog on its web site already, but
working with the Internet Archive will make more content available with an
easier search method for site visitors.
The first images have been posted on the internet and can be found by visitors
at NASAimages.org. NASA and the Internet Archive plan to have several
million images and thousands of hours of audio and video available for free.
Astronomers have
recently discovered planet CoRot-Exo-4b, which is a Jupiter-sized planet
that is able to orbit its star in 9.2 days. The European Space Agency
CoRot space telescope, which the ESA hopes will help find extrasolar planets,
made the discovery and astronomers presented their findings during the Cool
Stars 15 meeting in Scotland's St. Andrews University.
The planet's star, a tad bigger than the Earth's sun, is able to rotate at the
same pace as CoRot-Exo-4b -- which astronomers found surprising because they
believed the planet doesn't have a high enough mass and is too far from the
star for it to have a direct impact on the planet's rotation. Astronomers
are curious to try and discover whether or not the planet and its sun have
always operated in sync since they were formed more than 1,000 million years
ago.
"CoRot will no doubt find many more transiting planets, and by
systematically measuring their host stars' rotation periods we will gain
valuable insight into how stars interact with their planets," researchers
said.
CoRot has already found 50,000 different stars in less than two years of
commission in space.
Although alien life is a popular Hollywood story line for movies and TV shows,
the astronaut who owns the record for the longest moon walk said he believes
humans are not alone in the universe. Former astronaut Dr. Edgar
Mitchell, who is one of only 12 astronauts who have walked on the lunar
surface, shared his thoughts during a radio interview in the United Kingdom.
"Oh yes. There's
not much question at all that there is life throughout the universe,"
he said during the interview. "I'm totally sure we are not
alone."
Dr. Mitchell expanded on his comments, stating that humans on Earth have even
been visited by extraterrestrials in the past, but "it's been covered up
by governments for the last 60 years or so."
