Hardware Intel "Conroe-L" Launch Plans

Pentium E1000 and Celeron D 400 series to arrive in 2007

DailyTech previously reported Intel was set to unveil its upcoming Conroe-L based Pentium E1000 series and Celeron D 400 series in the future. It was unknown when the Conroe-L based Pentium E1000 and Celeron D 400 series would arrive.

Nevertheless, Intel’s latest roadmap reveals the Conroe-L processors will arrive in 2007. The Pentium E1000 series will arrive in Q2’07 with models E1060, E1040 and E1020 as previously reported. These new Pentium’s will target the value sector and coexist with Intel’s Pentium 4 HT models 651, 641 and 631 for a quarter.

In Q3’07 Intel will phase out the Pentium 4 HT 651, 641 and 631. Conroe-L Pentium E1000 series will replace the elder Cedar Mill based processors. Also arriving in Q3’07 is the Conroe-L based Celeron D 400 series. It is unknown how many speed grades and model numbers the Celeron D 400 series will initially launch with. Nevertheless roadmaps confirm DailyTech’s speculation that the Celeron D 400 series will indeed have 512K of L2 cache.

Thing is though, like many people, if it were a choice of a high-speed single core or a lower-speed dual-core I (personally) would go with the dual-core every time. I mean I switched from a Pentium M (Dothan) at 2.27Ghz to a Pentium D 805 at 3.0Ghz (a mild o/c) and was pleased with that choice (now I've got a Core 2 Duo E6400).

I don't see much of a future for single-cores, naturally they will appeal to some for cost reasons mainly but with entry-level dual-core so cheap, corners needn't be cut any more.

Wouldn't it be funny if AMD or intel released a single core that totally dominated the best dual core out there even in multi-threaded apps?

it would be possible in specific types of applications such as games, but other things like video encoding a multicore would dominate.

Around these parts, it seems that the gamers are the ones that are the greater market for high-performance parts than those that do media work. I'd say there's probably a fair market for a high end single core chip if it does hold its own pretty well.

Even games are becoming multithreaded. So no, single core is not going to be good enough for the future games. Time to move on.

Eh, I can only think of 1 or 2 games that can take advantage of multithreading. Even worse some games even have problems with it.

Well, if you paid any attention to IDF, GDC, and the other fun tech/game shows in recent months, you'd notice the shift to multi-core enhancements. Many future games are shifting to multi-core, and the differences are dramatic.

It's a $100 difference between a Sempron 64 2800+ and an Athlon X2 3800+. For the poor, it's a big hit. The Sempron will just tear up Windows XP (especially overclocked 50%), which runs great on even an old Athlon T-Bird 1000 with 384 Mb ram.

Sounds like a good plan, as long as they dont get an insane amount of SKU's doing this.


A Celeron D 400 should do well against semperon, in both price and performance. Must be VERY cheap for intel to make those Celeron D's on 65nm process :)

That depends on if they're really a totally different chip or just crippled E6x00 series chips. I guess they win out either way, though.

If the yields on the E6*00 series was so low they could satisfy demand for their Pentium and Celeron lines with the ill-formed dies, the E6*00s would cost substantially more.
