In the next few weeks, Intel will launch several new chipsets for its upcoming Core 2 Duo platform. The new 96x Broadwater family slated for a July launch comes in four primary flavors -- Q965, Q963, G965, and P965 -- all of which run at 1066MHz front side bus.

Q965 and Q963 are chipsets designated for use in Intel’s vPro business platform. Both chipsets will support upcoming Core 2 Duo processors but differ in terms of supported features. At the top of the vPro spectrum is the Q965 with support for DDR2-800 and Intel Active Management with System Defense features. Intel is marketing the Q965 as a performance chipset for business users. Business users who simply want a basic chipset without the fancy Intel Active Management and System Defense features can opt for the lower-end Q963. To keep costs down the Q963 loses DDR2-800 support and is limited to DDR2-667.

G965 will be the only new mainstream desktop chipset with an integrated next generation core with Vista Premium support. The new G965 will gain support for DDR2-800 and support Core 2 Duo processors. An integrated graphics-less version will be available as the P965 too.

Intel doesn’t have a replacement for the premium 975X chipset previously launched in December till Q2’07 when the Bearlake family replaces Broadwater. This is a bit strange as the 975X is limited to DDR2-667 memory and manufacturers have reported P965/G965/Q965 chipsets outperforming the 975X in single-card configurations. This leaves an opportunity for NVIDIA to market their recently announced nForce 590 SLI Intel Edition towards the premium market.

I will probably go with an nvidia chipset. I dont care about SLI/Crossfire. I just want something that will be able to overclock. Hopefully the conroe can overclock.

hopefully the nvidia intel boards can actually overclock...the current gen boards arent that great.

nvidia doesn't have a good track record with intel chipsets so far. i'm sticking with an intel chipset.

How come, intel has no good mobo alternatives for non SLI/CROSSFIRE solutions? AMD you can buy a DFI UT for like 120, and it is top notch, with intel 200 and above for any top of the line, complete BS. I wish nvdia or ati would use this weeakness but they seem to busy raping us with SLI/CROSSFIRE that I or 90% of the people who buy them will never use.
