Intel's latest roadmap adds two more processors to the mix

Intel’s latest roadmap adds two more processors to the upcoming lineup. The roadmap reveals early plans for the Yorkfield-based Core 2 Extreme and another Core 2 Duo E4000-sequence processor. With Yorkfield, Intel differentiates the Core 2 Extreme and Core 2 Duo models by the front-side bus speed.

Intel Core 2 Extreme Yorkfield processors will have a 1333 MHz front-side bus, continuing on where the Kentsfield Core 2 Extreme QX6850 leaves off. The quad-core processor supports Intel VT, Enhanced Intel SpeedStep and Intel 64 and Execute Disable Bit technologies. Intel leaves TXT technology out of the 45nm Core 2 Extreme however.

Intel’s Core 2 Duo E4000-sequence receives a speed bump in Q4’2007. The new Core 2 Duo E4600 clocks in at 2.4 GHz and remains on an 800 MHz front-side bus. Aside from the speed bump, the Core 2 Duo E4600 is no different from other Core 2 Duo E4000-sequence models.

Intel plans to debut the Core 2 Duo E4600 at a $133, per unit in 1,000 unit quantities, price point. The existing Core 2 Duo E4500 will drop down to a $113, per unit in 1,000 unit quantities, price point when the Core 2 Duo E4600 debuts.

Hey Guys ! What is AMD doing ? I am using Intel Pentium 4 2.80C Ghz from last 3 years now planning to upgrade and want to choose between AMD and Intel , but ...... AMD creates difficulty in selecting the right choice for me ...

If you want to wait 6 months, then stick around to see how the Phenom's perform. If you arent in a rush, then its always worth the wait.

If you're planning on upgrading now, then AMD can provide good processors on a tight budget. If you arent so constrained then Intel is the better option by a long way right now.

Not sure why this has been rated down to 0, the Pentium Dual Core E2140 and E2160 are both good CPU's, and even at the very low-end the Celeron 410, 420 and 430 offer way better single-core performance than their Netburst based predecessors.

Agreed

Intel currently offers the best price/performance ratio, specially E6600

And I have strong feeling that Intel Penryn will destroy Phenom processors. So, there is no need to think about AMD processors.

Let's just wait until we see some numbers before we start stating assumptions like facts.

Cache is one way of hiding latencies. So an IMC wont make much difference. And if the IMC is so good, I´m sure Intel would have kept it from their 386Sl and 486SL CPUs.

IMC is a sideeffect of the multisocket design. Its not a "winner" on the desktop. Its amazing people think that.

Hey i did not know you preferred 512K cache processors.. intel has it too! :P

you seem to grossly mis-informed.. and for most here, this might be news.. Intel was the first one that tried IMC on processor way back in 1998. Well ofcourse the project was voted down because of the FSB limitation. FYI AMD introduced on-board IMC in 2003 with the AMD Opteron built on AMD64 technology.. Check it up b4 commenting on it!

But even considering that you dont believe me, its not that its a great by design. And i dont think people give much concern where the mem-controller is! "Is my processor the best for the money i spent?" is the question. And currently Intel snatched that position from AMD... And it shows.. Probably that's why you will not go for the 512K intel processor..

Talking about Intel "Following", its because of the new bus-standard... CSI... So since they are drifting from FSB, they bought their old idea back...

Why did you go for a E6600 instead of a Brisbane yourself? well all of them have their reasons. All of them need the best for less!

I know you are not an AMD fanboy.. neither am i of Intel.. I agree with you on the pentium 4 being absolute cr*p!! I too went for an AMD Athlon64 3K+ processor bk then..

Lets see if Phenom(Venom) can match Penryn if not for Nehalem(Anhilate).. :)

It has been said many times, many ways: AMD makes CPU's and Intel sells CPU's. Whether or not you think that's a complete description of the field, AMD is a chihauha pitted against a german shepard. Thankfully, this is one chihauha that knows some wicked kung-fu, a part of which is the IMC.

AMD is the weaker of the two companies, (as of the Q1 2007) having roughly 1/3 of Intel's funds. So they must compensate. They do on an everyday basis what was a revolutionary design philosophy for the Pentium M/Core/core2 design team.

Even as early as the origional slot a Athlons, AMD had a clear advantage in design. With nearly twice the FLOP performance of the p6 design, and roughly 120% IPC advantage they could not be ignored.

The IMC is simply a more efficient method of memory access. In the Athlon XP days, an AMD CPU performed 2-7% better clock-for-clock with 512kb vs. 256kb. And, today, AMD's caches perform similiarly with 512kb and 1024kb.

AMD has had a good history of excellent designs, one that will continue despite(often well-grounded) nay-saying. Unfortunately, this is one case where Intel's sheer brute financial force has managed to triumph over the good old-fashioned ingenuity of AMD.

intel actually had the integrated memory controller idea before AMD, it's just that AMD commercialized it. Timan was actually I believe a 2nd or 3rd gen R&D piece that intel made with an IMC. in typical AMD fashion, they again copy intel. I hope they create something totally new and fantastic to make things go even faster, because if it werent for the 64's, we'd still be on netburst. once intel gets CSI though, bam. amd better look the hell out.

about $600 will get you a p35 mobo, a 3ghz quad core, and 2gb of ram at the end of july. even if amd's new stuff is 'phenom'onal, i doubt if it will offer this much bang for the buck.

I just ran through Newegg and came up with some pricing:

Q6600 2.4GHz: $266 (after price drop)
2GB DDR2-800: $62
Gigabyte DS3 P35 w/DDR3 support: $160

So, you can get a QC system with awesome OC potential and DDR3 support started for under $490.

I'll probably buy those exact items except I'd get 4GB DDR2-800 for $200, then sell my current C2D/mobo/RAM to my dad for his workstation or something...

IMHO Phenom should beat conroe like conroe beat athlon. If AMD doesn't beat intel, AMD deserve to go bankrupt. I mean, conroe is out for a whole year now. Plus, it doesn't really matter for Intel, if intel goes according to their time line, they are releasing a new architecture next year? or the year after. Which, if AMD releases now, one year from AMD's release.

I know I am out of my league when i say this, but I think the strategy of pushing down new processors/architectures down onto consumers actually hurts more than helps.

Intel's current strategy has brought down a few changes in market:
a) Intel has created so much hype abt its tick-tock that even common man has started to realize there is change happening. Thus, an average would delay his/her purchase to get a better PC.
b) With trying to hurt AMD, Intel has kept pushing down prices which in turn has made a lot of consumers wary abt buying a PC now. 30% cut in Santa Rosa, 50% cut in quad core..... come on man, there is no consumer good which has price declines like that...
c) Most PC's in homes bought in last3-4 years are not obsolete currently by any standards especially if all one does is word, ppt and web surfing. Even for gamers I am sure most PC's are still doable.

Net net, Intel has succeeded in actually shrinking the market rather than expanding it.... and that means lower economy of scales. Proof:
a) Intel pushing out 45nm fab upgrade at one of the 4 locations. Ofcourse also due to slower response from AMD.
b) Dismal semi outlook and not just because of memory decline...

My 2 cents - Intel is a big guerrilla and it can trample AMD no doubt but I am worried abt the downward spiral this war is taking the whole industry.

i dunno about that, i think it really help the end user with all this competition. Lower prices, improved technology help push the industry in the right way.
without AMD smoking the Pentium 4, we'd still be stuck with overpriced crappy netburst processors.

Intel is offering killing prices.they are giving Dual Cores at price of a P-4 sometime back.
AMD cant win with prices now.they have to improve Price Performance ratio.

What about all that hardware accelerated DRM crap intel was trying to pull? If I go with an AMD chip, do I have to put up with that? I just want a purchase outlet that says "trusted computing? Go to hades." Just wondering, 'cause I thought AMD was advertising that as a "feature" too.

And yeah, I'd have to say the first thing I look at with a chip is process size. But that's probably because I want to do some over-clocking and under-clocking. Still, if I were AMD, that's where I'd try to do stuff. Maybe even come up with software that would allow the Open source community to make your designs for you ;)

There is no such thing as DRM acceleration in either vendors upcoming products. You must be thinking of TXT (which the article states is not there) for trusted computing which is a totally different concept.

SSE4 is in all Penryn derived processors as far as I am aware, this includes Wolfdale and Yorkfield.
