PlayStation 3 with 120GB to 160GB hard drive coming soon

Last week, a Best Buy memo indicated that the 80GB PlayStation 3 would be discontinued from the retailer’s supply.

If true and applicable to other retailers in North America, it could mean that only a single SKU of PlayStation 3 would exist on the market. According to an Ars Technica source, it may not be long until yet another PlayStation 3 model comes to market.

“Sony is, in fact, phasing out the 80GB PS3. Sony is going to stay with the two-SKU approach though, and the prices look to stay the same,” the source told the website. “The Spiderman 3 pack-in will disappear as well once the 80GB unit is gone. In order to maintain a similar value proposition to the 80GB/Spiderman 3 bundle, I expect to see a storage increase to 120 or 160GB at the same price point, plus the new Dual-Shock 3 controller...”

In response to reports of the discontinuation, Sony provided the official “no comment” to Wired’s Game|Life, saying, “I caught up with all of the posts and news last night, and as you know, we don't comment on rumors and speculation.”

The DualShock 3 is the much heralded controller that brings vibration force feedback to the PlayStation 3. It was release in 2007 for the Japan market, but has not yet been announced for any other territory.

The introduction of a 120GB or 160GB PlayStation 3 would move the overall SKU count for the console in North America up to five. The PS3 originally launched with 20GB and 60GB models, though both were eventually discontinued throughout the course of 2007. The 80GB was introduced last summer, but came with reduced PS2 backwards compatible functionality. The 40GB model entered the market in time for the holiday season as the lowest priced PS3 yet, at $399.

One of my three Wii remotes die on me every week. Seriously, the batteries were a little under designed. I would have preferred a Li-ion battery pack charged through the underused USB port.

You can buy a Lithium Ion battery pack and a charger/holder thingy for it.

And have one of the main advantages of the Wii Dissapear?
That advantage being Price, and it may have impacted availability if there was a short supply of chargers and battery's and what not, which Nintendo do not need at the moment.

Seriously, but a charger and some Lithium Ion AA rechargeable battery's, it can't be that hard can it?

That is what i hate on the Wii:

- must buy another controller to be enjoyable
- must buy chargers
- must buy web browser??

In the end it isn't a so cheap console.

The initial outlay is cheap, for low income earners it's easier to buy a Wii, then buy the other peripherals over time, its not like you are forced to buy them in order to enjoy yourself.

That's how it is with Sony-haters around these parts: damned if they do, damned if they don't.

In any case, Sony paid a hefty sum to Immersion in order to settle and get rumble technology back into the PS controller. Personally, I think it was well worth it. MGS4 without force feedback would be blasphemy.

RE: Sony you disappoint me!
By SilentSin on 1/28/2008 10:01:05 PM , Rating: 4
My sentiments exactly. The things that team at Konami do with that game are incredible, I don't see how they could go back at this point. In my opinion, MGS was the game that really pioneered the need for force feedback on the original PSX and used it to add a whole new cinematic dimension. The PC version was so flat and dull in comparison, aside from being a terrible port anyway (you really know how to port games for your own platform MS yeesh).

FF for the most part is extremely tacky -I turn that crap off in sports games...yeah getting hit by a 300lb lineman feels like a handbuzzer okay- but it has its moments where it really shines -feeling the pavement in racing games, feeling your heartbeat while you're sniping- and that's what it needs to be there for. Sucks it took so long for this whole ordeal to get worked out.

Um, it does have full mouse and keyboard support. Any games that don't support mouse and keyboard controls aren't Sony's fault. That's the fault of the developers who didn't feel like adding support for another control scheme. The PS3 fully supports keyboard and mouse controls, but it's up to the game developers to actually design and program those controls.

Wasn't me, that's for sure. I actually prefer the lighter rumble-free pads with longer battery life. Never cared for rumble.

But really, if you're looking to place blame anywhere, place it on Immersion. Another vague patent whoring company coming out of nowhere ten years after the fact to claim infringement. Sony fought them in court and lost and Microsoft paid them off. There's the difference, glorify whichever one gets your knickers up.

The DualShock 3 also has a significantly larger battery than the SIXAXIS (300mAh vs. 30mAh), so no, you're not doing too bad for battery life with the DualShock 3.

Charging time, on the other hand, is probably borderline obscene over USB (couple hours?).

I'm trying to figure out what it is that motivates SCE to come up with this stuff. I know they're not stupid and there is a lot of marketing/development strategy that goes into this, but I can only imagine the garden-variety gamer/tech journalist sitting at the conference table while this conversation takes place:

"Guys, we're trailing Microsoft and Nintendo right now, our tie-in ratio is a joke and we're the laughingstock of the industry. We've got to change direction - we need a paradigm shift."
"We put explicit scenes in our games!"
"I was watching Fox earlier, looks like MS has cornered the market on that."
"I've got it! Wait for it. Wait for it. BIGGER HARD DRIVE AND RUMBLE CONTROLLER."

*gaming observer proceeds to wipe up nose-ejected milk*

As much pleasure as it would give me to see SCE run into the ground, I hope that's not the case. Someone needs to keep MS and Nintendo honest.

Nice red herring.

Since you seem to disagree (I think) with Sony's non-stupid marketing/developing strategy why don't you hold your milk down long enough and enlighten us on how you think Sony should go about pleasing those "garden-variety gamer/tech journalists".

Maybe Sony should never increase the capacity of the PS3 hard drives? OK Sony put a freeze on that.

Rumble seems to be popular. As other geniuses in here felt it is a must have feature, in particular when it wasn't available of course.

But yes lets hope Sony's marketing bafoonery does keep competition tight. We can only hope they can survive without your sage advice.

I think his point is, instead of Sony actually dropping the price of the console, like EVERYONE WANTS THEM TO DO, they just keep adding crap to it and price it the same as the outgoing model. People don't want more crap, they want a cheaper console.

Sure, for $500 if this pans out, you will be getting more storage and a better controller than you got for $600 with the launch 60GB. That isn't disputed. But, if they want to increase market share, and get the thing out there, they need a cheaper version.

With Blu-Ray seemingly winning the high-def disc war, there is no better time than now to drop the prices across the board on the PS3 and move some units. Drop the 40GB to $300, and the 120-ishGB verison to $400, and you will move units.

We all know that the "Playstation" part of the PS3 is just along for the ride with the Blu-Ray trojan horse. So, if they have to take a little hit on costs to get the thing out to more people, then so be it. You price those units at $300 and $400 this spring with GTA and MGS coming, along with a big selling point in Blu-Ray, and you will move them.

Sony isn't looking to drop the price, just keep the price stable and continue keeping parts up-to-date at their price points.

Hard drive costs are slowly dropping and they are simply swapping out the drives with one at the old price point. It's kind of how I upgrade my home server. I buy hard drives at the $100 price point. As time goes on, I'm buying different sizes. Use to be 120 gig, then 200 gig, then 320 gig, now 500 gig.

There could also be underlying conditions on the move. Maybe Sony has a contract with Samsung, Hitachi, WD, Seagate, or whoever produces their hard drive, that says they must buy hard drives at X price for X amount of years and they give them a bulk discount.

There's also two versions of the PS3. Buy the cheaper one if you don't like the higher cost of the feature enriched one.

I already have a PS3. I have a 20GB, and it works fine for me.

My point was, with all that they have going for them, right now would be a great time to drop the price. If they really want to take this thing seriously, they need to act. With the promise of a decent lineup of games coming, and the Blu-Ray selling point, there is no reason they shouldn't move consoles.

But, just tacking more crap onto it, and selling it at the same price won't do it. People expect prices to go down in a year and a half, not to stay the same, bigger drive or not.

MS as well could do the same. An Elite at $400, the Premium at $300, and Arcade at $200 would be helpful if they want to stay ahead of Sony. In the US at least, they have no shot in Japan.

I would expect at least a $50 price cut on all models in Q2 when the RSX is shrunk to 65nm.

RE: Excellent...
By Circle T on 1/29/2008 5:57:26 PM , Rating: 3
Yep. Drop the price a bit around late March/early April, in that GTA/MGS/GT5P time period. That, in my opinion, would do great things for their install base.

And, as we know, its not just gamers that they want to increase with an install base. They need those Blu-Ray users to increase quite a bit as well if they want to keep the momentum going. A $300 Blu-Ray player that ALSO plays games would be an easy sell to just about anyone looking.

Why not lower prices instead of including a movie and what not. I think people would rather see it cost less than the 360 then get a free movie.

RE: Lower Prices instead
By HotdogIT on 1/28/2008 6:05:29 PM , Rating: 3
Because the media/game cost is much easier to swallow than 50 bucks off, or what not.

Plus, they probably figure a free game or movie is appealing to a lot of people. Especially if the game retails for ~60 or so.

RE: Lower Prices instead
By mmntech on 1/28/2008 6:56:07 PM , Rating: 2
Can't argue with that point. Even if they reduced the price $50, the person would still have to buy a game so including a game is kind of a price reduction. I think it's kind of stupid to sell any console without a game.

There's been mutterings about a 120gb model over at PSU too. I don't know about this. Sony is releasing far too many PS3 SKUs and I think it's confusing people. Gone are the days when there was only one model, for better or worse. Microsoft has had four 360 SKUs. Sony has had five PS3 SKUs already (including the 60gb PAL). Both consoles have only been out two and one year(s) respectively. Rather than just bumping up the HDD space with each SKU, Sony should keep the 40gb and 80gb models and make DIY hard drive kits available like they did with the PS2.

RE: Lower Prices instead
By afkrotch on 1/29/2008 8:05:03 AM , Rating: 2
Sony only sells 2 SKUs at one point in time. Sure they've made more than 2 overall. Better than Microsoft's current 4 SKUs that are sold at one point in time.

Sony - 40 gig and 80 gig model
Microsoft - Basic, Gamer, Premium, and Elite.

RE: Lower Prices instead
By Torched on 1/29/2008 8:41:07 AM , Rating: 2
There is no confusion. All models play all PS3 games. It would be different if one sku didn't play all the PS3 library or if some features of the games were missing a la Bluray 1.0/1.1/2.0

RE: Lower Prices instead
By BigToque on 1/28/2008 7:05:58 PM , Rating: 2
I imagine that over time it becomes more expensive to include a lower capacity driver over a larger drive.

If a manufacturer has moved its lines from 80gb to 120gb drives, they would probably charge a premium to complete a "special order" for Sony.

Any word on BW compaitbility?

If I remember correctly, the 80GB PS3 still had barebones support for hardware backwards compatibility which allowed the system to run games with the newer heavily-software approach. The 40GB SKU shed even this limited compatibility in the name of lower cost but how does the new 120/160GB SKU handle this? Is it pretty much a 40GB PS3 with a rumble controller and the extra ports or is it more like the current 80GB part (or maybe the 60GB... one can hope)?

I would keep the 60gb version just for the backward compatability. Hell, maybe one day it'll be so sought after that you can net a profit on ebay! (unlikely though :P )

if you find that you're running out of hd space, you can always just go to newegg and get a new hd.

Yah I bought my 60GB PS3 at Pamida a few days ago, they had two as well. Seeing as I only wanted PS2/PS1 backward compatibility, Blu-ray movies, and the chance to play MGS4 and possibly a FFVII remake, I had to buy it.

The only other choice is to buy one used or it new online for way more than what it is worth.

(this is comment on how they got rid of the PS2 hardware in all of the rest of PS3, and my guess is they did it so more people download games off PS Store)

2 points:

1) this is neither an official nor an unofficial announcement from sony, it is merely ars technica's conjecture.

2) the release of a PS3 system is logical, and pretty much everyone who knows that the 80GB is going away will tell you that a replacement for it won't be far off.

so why not wait until there is some actual evidence of this new machine (such as an announcement or an FCC filing) before writing a story?

It's pretty apparent that Ars is just reading off a Best Buy internal memo. If you read the other articles that both DT and Ars linked to, that pattern would be obvious.

First, yes I would consider it noteworthy. Just because it seems logical doesn't mean everyone knows a higher model is due to arrive. This is the first I'd heard it mentioned.

Second, if it came from Ars Technica then I am inclined to believe it. They do not propagate random rumors. Your two points would appear to slightly contradict each other.

..on whether or not the rumored new system will have BC. That is the biggest question on EVERYONES mind to my knowledge. And no articles seem to clarify that one way or the other.

For all the uninformed, it's pretty simple.

1) The 20GB and 60GB have/had FULL hardware BC.

2) The 80GB had a combination of hardware and software BC covering about 88% of the games.

3) The 40GB has ZERO BC, and CANNOT be upgraded in any way to make it BC (unless Sony comes up with something, but as of this writing there is NO way to get BC on a 40GB).

4) You CAN upgrade the HDD in ANY PS3. The only prerequisite is that it be a 2.5" HDD, nothing more.

5) Will the rumored NEW model have BC?

That's what I want to know.

Wow, did I offend you in some way? That seemed pretty personal of an attack.

I own an 80GB (used to own a 60GB, but sold it to a friend for his kids christmas, and recently got the 80GB), and a 360, so it isn't like I'm some 360 fanboy here. No need to get your panties in a bunch my friend.

(I even had a Wii, but sold it after a couple of months. it got extremely boring. Now I wish I would've kept it as I could made some money for extra christmas presents, but hindsight is 20/20..moving on..)

Like it or not, SEVERAL people want BC. Maybe not EVERYONE wants it (admittedly my statement was a bit over generalized), but to say it isn't an issue is just as general a statement to make (if not MORE so) and is probably less accurate on the whole, at least as of this writing (the tide could swing within the next year or so).

I work part time at a Gamestop (I have a full time job as a phone tech, and do computer work/repair as well, , so please no snide remarks. I work there for the game discounts), and people tend to ask quite often what the difference is between the 40Gb and 80GB models. Usually when they hear about the lack of BC they tend to wince a lot.

So to say no one wants it is blatantly wrong.

If you'd read my post with ANY sort of neutrality you could see I wasn't slamming Sony in any way. I was genuinely curious, as are all of my friends (even the ones who work at Gamestop).

Basically it seems YOU took offense because you thought I was slamming Sony (which I obviously wasn't) and felt the need to retaliate. Sounds like a bit of a insecurity issue if you ask me.

And yes the Wii is BC compatible with the GC games, you answered you own question on that one.

I think on the whole MANY more people care about BC than the HDD size since you can upgrade the HDD at your leisure (BC isn't something that you can currently UPGRADE to on your PS3). 80GB, 100GB, 120GB, 160GB. It doesn't make that big a difference as it does on the 360 (where we get reamed needlessly. I've love to see that remedied though).

So next time don't take it so personally, especially since I obviously DIDN'T slam your apparently PRECIOUS Sony in ANY way my friend.

Think before you reply.

Kevin

It is for people who do not want to pay $60 for a PS3 game. For that same $60 you could get two or three PS2 games. So, instead of buying "Uncharted: Drake's Adventure" you could buy the last two Tomb Raider games (and have $25 left over) or "Tomb Raider: Anniversary" and "God of War II". This obviously doesn't apply to the latest sports games as they lose resell value the quickest (there's a new Madden very year, for example. The old one will lose value quicker, even if it may be better than the newest.) Of course, for that kind of money it may make more sense to rent the game, especially if it can be beat in a day or two.

Why the hell do you want this bloat?
By Tilmitt on 1/29/2008 9:11:12 AM , Rating: 2
I cannot understand how people could want this rumble feature. It makes the controller heavier and gives an unpleasant sensation. If a controller rumbles during a game it doesn't add to the immersion, it's the opposite. I just think, the controller is shaking annoyingly and hurting my hands, reminding me that I'm playing a game and destroying the immersion.

The world seems to want endless features tacked on to everything, until they have wholly ruined their experiences.

I'll probably buy one more controller, but it'll be just another white sixaxis. It's nice and light like the original digital controllers before they came out with those bloated heavy analogue ones.

Personally, I think the sixaxis controllers could do with a bit of extra weight. Though it's perhaps more a question of balance?

xBox 360 controllers are much more comfortable and a bit of rumble certainly helps.

As a <insert opinion of a PS3 early adopter who paid £500 here> who brought a PS3 in the first couple of months of release who bought a couple of controllers at the time I can't really see me bothering to get another just for the sake of the rumble though.

It's not just rumble, we want continuously variable rumble, so that getting shot in a game doesn't feel the same as shooting one's rifle or pistol, or to be warned when approaching danger. Just turning it on full blast is likely to turn one off to the sensation altogether.

I think Sony should focus on bringing new games on to its console rather than new SKU's. The dual shock 3 is a minor step in the right direction but what we need from Sony is to announce new games for its console. If we had more games launching on the 360 and ps3 together then Sony can hope for a profit since that would make things interesting (with the blu-ray winning over the format wars and the 360 left with a SD dvd rom). But for now it has to be software on Kaz Hirai mind if he wants this to be a success.

No worries, highly anticipated titles like:

-Gran Turismo 5
-Haze
-Metal Gear Solid 4
-White Knight Chronicles
-Killzone 2
-Resistance 2
-Disgaea 3

Just to name a few, means that 2008 will be an absolute contrast to what the majority of 2007 was for the PS3. The Gran Turismo series alone sells around roughly 10 million copies with each iteration released. 2008-2009 will be very nice for PS3 gaming.

Ok, someone shed some light on this for me. I am looking to get a PS3 in the near future and I don't see what the big deal is to get a 120GB or larger unit. What is all of this storage for? Is all of that really necessary?

Well, besides the fact that you can fill the drive will all your own MP3 music, photos, and MPEG/DIVX/etc videos (ie porn...) You can also fill it with downloaded game demos and trailers, plus at some point they plan to offer downloadable movie/TV shows ala iTunes.

Don't forget to add in that you can install some games onto the hard drive for faster loading. Wish the Xbox 360 had that feature.

HD is not the answer

I dont think the size of the PS3 hard drive is what's killing it - the answer is more quality games. 1 terabyte hard drive will not make much difference if there are no great games.

Agreed, what is the point in the massive hard drives anyway?

There's not a great deal of stuff to download and most videos/music/images that may be viewed/listened to via the console will probably be stored on a PC on the home network where the £$/GB ai a much better ratio as you aren't limited to 2.5" drives.

I think the poster in another thread has got it right, it's just a case of which hard drives are the cheapest. the prices of 2.5" drives seem to have come down quite a lot since the PS3 was released.

I've been waiting for Dualshock 3 before I jumped into the PS3 pool. Hope it comes soon!

Wait a second...

Hmmm, does this mean the 40gb is staying put at the same price? I may reconsider keeping mine and getting a ~120gb / dualshock version instead. Also, I wonder if this new SKU will have the card reader and 2 extra USB ports?

So $100 for 80-120 more GB, DualShock 3, 2 extra USB ports and a multi-card reader... I just might have to activate my Best Buy 30-day return right away!

Should have been included?

I for one, am very happy that Sony is coming out with the DualShock3 controller but what about the people who already bought the consoles?

They dont have Rumble, and most of them are holding off purchasing more controllers until DualShock is launched stateside.

Doesn't anyone else this should have been included in the original package?

But honestly, rumble feature, bluray, Media centre for the living room?

Sold.

What really matters

Hello.............. Sony

Did you know its the games, that matter.
How many cool games do you have that use that great Cell CPU that matters
Its about being able to use all those hundreds of PS2 games that 40 million gamers have that matters
A few more megbytes of HD and a shaking control don't change the fact its still overpriced for the games it got.
