New iPhone will reportedly feature aluminum casing and redesigned antenna

Lump this one squarely in the rumor column: The upcoming iPhone 5 will eschew the glass back casing of the iPhone 4 for aluminum back casing.

At least that's the word from Macotakara, which Macrumors picked up. "Decision to design similar to iPod touch instead of using glass is supposed that Apple seems to stop problems which are told widely damages from scratching, difficulties of painting white and weight of glass," reads the Chinese-to-English translation.

Also according to the report, the antenna will be redesigned for seemingly no reason at all (that's sarcasm), meaning iPhone users will have to learn a whole new way to hold the phone.

The iPhone 5 is also reported to sport the new A5 processor that Apple recently unveiled in its forthcoming iPad 2. If Apple follows its usual release schedule, the new iPhone should be announced this summer.

Forgot to mention that it'll also sport a pixy dust dispenser, just to make the new phone more magical than before.

... its a regression... Its like Apple is telling us that the current version was a mistake... Apple doesn't do regressions, they instead plow ahead as if there is no problem. I expect more glass, less buttons, and a bigger Apple logo on the next one.

Correction, it will be called an "iPixy Dust Dispenser" and of course, all three of the words will be patentened separately by Apple.

You should be "patentententended" for being a total patent yourself.

To this day, I have never had a problem with my iPhone 4 - best phone I've ever had. Antenna Gate is supposed to be a big problem, I should have experienced it right? Am I one of the "lucky" ones?

I never did either...and i got free chikfila from the apple store when i went to go get mine.

And most users likely didn't have problems, but it's awful 'head in the sand' to say that everyone's experience was flawless. The real issue is the way apple responds when people have problems, blame the user/flat out denial.

I really want to agree, but I can't.

I had the old clip-on shuffles (my first owned Apple product if that gives any idea to how much I like Apple) and the OS screwed up.

That's when I found out you had to make an appointment in the store with a "genius", despite the store not being busy - what kind of genius do they have working that can't use out-of-order processing? Anyhow, the Shuffle was acting up and he actually did kindly restore it, despite my efforts. Of course the problem was probably because it was syncing through USB with a Windows machine.

My only question is, if there was nothing wrong with the iphone 4 antenna, why then did they have to re-design it? Steve Vader said it was perfect.....so why the change??

Also, I heard that the iphone 6 will magically cure cancer, and that's what Steve's waiting for.....no more silly doctors, with thier non-magical healing!!

Did you use the bumper?

The problem was when you didn't use the bumper because your bare hand would act as a conductor and bridge the two antennas - causing all sorts of signal noise and other problems. The bumper was Apple's "fix" to the antenna problem because rubber is an insulator.

You just didn't hold it the wrong way at the wrong time. It isn't an issue of a faulty unit, all do this. Just find somewhere with 1-2 bars of reception and put your finger over the lower left black band and wait 15 seconds or so. The bars will go away and you will lose service or switch from 3G to Edge.

C5 Z06 never had mag wheels. Always aluminum.

However, there was a mag wheel option for some model year base C5's.

Does that mean MacGyver could turn it into a blowtorch?

Either way I'd like to see if they're going to release both a CDMA and GSM one or are they going to favor one.

Similar sentiment here.

I seriously doubt I'd get an iPhone5 anyway, but if there's no LTE in there it's absolutely a non starter for me.

Wow, I expected this, but not this large and fast. I know that Android as a platform is just over iOS/Apple in America now to, so it seems to be taking a bigger bite than I expected. The quote is from a market research firm in Western Europe. I also heard much discussion of app developers making more money on Android app significantly as well. This of course was on well made full applications such as games etc. It would seem to me to be pretty attractive to developers.

"The last quarter of 2010 clearly shows the trends for the coming years in Western Europe. The Western European mobile phone market will be dominated by smartphones, and Android will be the king of the hill, Android surged from 4% to 31% market share in less than a year to become the market leader in 4Q10 and the fastest growing operating system ever."

Aluminum casing?

I seriously doubt that. After all the flack Apple has taken for the iPhone 4 reception issue I seriously doubt they would put a reception killing aluminum casing around the next iPhone.

what title?

yep, the same here. no probs with iphone4 - w/o bumper case. And i do hold it wrong, i'm lefty.
