Samsung takes the top spot in smartphones

Research company IDC has published its numbers for the mobile phone market for Q2 of 2013. According to the latest numbers, the global mobile phone market grew 6% year-over-year during Q2 of 2013. Phone vendors shipped a total of 432.1 million mobile phones during the quarter compared to 407.7 million during the second quarter of 2012.

"The smartphone market is still a rising tide that's lifting many ships," said Kevin Restivo, Senior Research Analyst with IDC's Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker. "Though Samsung and Apple are the dominant players, the market is as fragmented as ever. There is ample opportunity for smartphone vendors with differentiated offerings."

Samsung shipped 72.4 million units, grabbing 30.4% of market and the top spot. Apple took the number two spot shipping 31.2 million units for 13.1% of the overall market. Rounding out the top five were LG in third place with 12.1 million units shipped, Lenovo in fourth with 11.3 million units shipped, and the ZTE in fifth with 10.1 million units shipped.

Taking a closer look at the numbers, LG and Lenovo were two of the biggest movers during Q2 2013. LG witnessed a 108 percent increase in year-over-year shipments, while Lenovo experienced 130 percent growth year-over-year.

Number don't add up

432 million shipped in Q2 with Samsung shipping 72 millions units and having 30% market share doesn't make sense. 30% of 432 million is more like 130 million units.

When numbers don't add up like this in a blog you have to wonder about the accuracy of the entire article.

It only doesn't make sense if you don't understand what the article is saying.

Read it again carefully and this time try to comprehend what it is the reporters are saying.

(Hint: They are not saying that Samsung has 30% of Q2 sales . They are sating that Samsung has 30% market share .)

I think the 432 million number is referring to the entire mobile phone market... flip-phones and smartphones.

Then they start talking about the smartphone market in particular which is where the Samsung numbers come from.

Lenovo was a surprise since I was guessing HTC would be up there.
