Android tablets to pass the iPad this year

Tablets running the Android operating system will overtake the iPad this year for the first time, according to a new report from research firm IDC. IDC says a growing variety of smaller and cheaper Android tablets will gain significant traction in the consumer marketplace this year and begin to erode the dominance of Apple's iPad.

The iPad has reigned supreme in the tablet market since it launched in 2010.

While sales and shipments of the iPad and iPhone are expected to grow at impressive rates, lower-cost Android tablets will become huge sources of growth for companies such as Samsung.

According to IDC, iPad shipments are expected to make up 46% of the tablet market for 2013, down from 51% in 2012. Tablets running Android are expected to increase their market share to 49% in 2013, up from 42% in 2012. The smaller screen market is expected to grow rapidly in the tablet segment.

"One in every two tablets shipped this quarter was below 8 inches in screen size. And in terms of shipments, we expect smaller tablets to continue growing in 2013 and beyond," IDC said in a press release.

While Android tablets are expected to be one of the biggest movers in the tablet market, IDC is predicting that Microsoft will grow its market share in the tablet market as well. IDC says that during 2012 the Windows 8 tablet platform had only 1% of the market. By 2017, the research firm predicts that Microsoft will grow its share the tablet market to 7.4%.

Some are also expecting a similar decline in sales for the iPhone in the smartphone industry as popular Android-powered devices from Samsung flood the market.

Analyst Peter Misek from Jefferies compared Apple to BlackBerry this week saying that the iPhone was on the offensive against Samsung Android-powered smartphones.

"Historically when handset makers fall out of favor (e.g., the Razr, Blackberry, HTC) they fall faster/further than expected," said Misek.

While they make you cringe, they make others very happy. I've seen plenty of people using them seemingly happily, and one of the reasons for people buying them is that they can't afford anything but a chinese knockoff.

what does it matter if it makes you cringe if they do their job for other people? I could say the ipad makes me cringe, it doesn't mean my personal view changes the reality of the situation.

Tony is that you?

Again, what do profit margins have to do with the end user? We know Apple is highly profitable, what does that have to do with this? What's it have to do with anything?

quote:
But Apple does not make or sell cheap products for good reason... there is very little money to be made at the low end.

Well good thing that everyone doesn't think the way Apple does, or those who want or can only afford a "low end" phone would be shi% out of luck I guess.

quote:
Samsung sold 30% more phones than Apple did, but they only took in LESS THAN 50% of the profits that Apple received selling the iPhone!

Samsung is playing the long game, and it's working. Unless Apple does something to shake up the paradigm, you won't be able to say this in the next three to five years.

I'm glad how much money Apple makes keeps you and Tony and others warm at night. But most people have other concerns, and they don't buy a product based only on how much they'll get gouged for it.

Yup, it never fails. Even on articles that have zero to do with Apple, if its a company that competes with Apple in any way one of the following trolls will be there to try and crap on it.

Tony Swash (the illustrious troll #1).
Takinyourpoints
Messele
xti
Jack Barton
Testerguy
Nortel
sevearl others as well...

It never fails on ANY article about ANY product that competes in ANY way with Apple, one of them will be there to try and crap on it in typical troll fashion.

Whatever though, regardless of how they huff and puff about it, Android marches on and it is the #1 mobile OS. It will stay #1 until something better comes along and knocks it off, and I welcome that day - it means competition is alive.

Are you serious? LOL.

You say that as if you aren't in every single article about every company that competes in any way with Apple, crapping on their products. That is the very definition of a Troll...

And are you really saying I dont know how to debate it with you? You and I have had many many many debates, and one thing is clear from those debates... You are here to defend Apple, every move they make and every step they take, no questions asked. I make up my mind based on each product and features. You are loyal to a company and I am loyal to the tech. When Android came along and out-did Apple and became the best functioning mobile OS, I moved to Android, you of course stayed with Apple. When something better comes along and out-does Android and becomes a better platform, I will dump Android like it was a whiney bitch, get the latest and greatest and not look back. You will still be on the Apple platform no matter what. Don't even try to deny any of that. You probably dont even see the point of that argument do you ?

"The only reason in your opinion anyone would use it is that they're sheeple. "

That's not at all what I said. I have never said anything like that not today, or ever, nor am an an Apple hater... I personally commend Apple for their contributions to the industry and thank them for the iPhone. It was leaps and bounds better than anything else on the market at the time and it literally forced everyone else to raise their games. We all benefit from that. We all benefit from their push on higher resolutions too. Like anything else, they do some good and some bad moves. Overall, a good force in the industry. I think your arguments about Apple and it's competitors come from that same base, but are a few years old and in dire need up updating to todays products. Everything you say is true... Just true in the past.

Anyhow, today's thread was about the several people that have to come into every article about an Apple competitor and try and crap all over products for no other reason than they compete with Apple. You probably don't deserve to be lumped in with that particular group. At the very worst you are the least "one sided" of the lot.

Oh look Chinese iPhone clones. So I guess we'll just use this to defeat any positive Apple news as well?

Seriously every time a positive Android story surfaces, an iTard is there to bring up these supposed Chinese knock-offs as the cause. As if anyone believes that's a large percentage, if any.

If it so offends you that a company competing with Apple does well that you need to resort to this manufactured argument about mythical "knock offs" running wild, you need to seriously step back and see the kind of person you're becoming.

Its not really a surprising analysis. You could have seaid teh same thing in 2011 when Android phones outpaced iPhone. It's inevitable. Once upon a time the iPad was the best tablet available. It cost alot but it was the best. Now its no longer the best. There are better suited tablets out there that cost less and do the same things that 99% of users need (Browse web, check email, run apps). It's not hard to predict that the better valued model takes over. What surprises me is what took so long.

What non-iPad tablet is better? What has better performance, battery life, or applications? The Surface Pro is the only thing I'd say is close but that's really an ultrabook based on price, OS, and specs.

If you don't care about performance or applications then yes, there are other options, but your argument basically boils down to saying that a Kia is the best car because it is cheap and is "good enough".

Some of us want more, but then again a $200 video card isn't "good enough" for me either.

Why ignoring Clover Trail Win8 tablets? Run all the Windows apps fast, Office, Outlook, Quickbooks, ya name it! Just not the heavy games and apps like Maya. Attach USB stuff, or Bluetooth, say keyboards or mice, and turn into a small work PC! Have all day battery life! Same weight/size/thickness as iPad, even lighter sometimes. Also run all your new Modern aka Metro apps too! (there are two recently posted really cool games in the Win8 app market, Judge Dredd and Guns for Hire, so app market is not totally empty of fun stuff). Overall it's a much better proposition for most users than Surface Pro.

Apple might make "the best" tablet, too bad iOS is poorly optimized for it and Apple doesn't seem to care.

Same 5x4 grid with laughably gigantic icons relative to screen space, piss-poor multitasking, and dumbed-down interface. What's the point of all that power if it can't do as much as the competition?

Sure it is, you just don't know because you aren't on a platform that has them. There are loads of awesome board and strategy games on iOS that are perfect with multitouch. Some PC ports are actually better on iPad thanks to multitouch. I generally prefer strategy and tactical games on the iPad at this point.

quote:

iPads support gamepads as well. Emulators too with simple jailbreaking. Its a bit gimmicky though, I've done it but everything I play on smaller screens ends up revolving around touch interface. I quickly went back to my PC or laptop for those kinds of games; bigger monitors are better for them. Its also why I don't usually buy arcade ports or action games on iPad.

Its like any other platform, some are better for some types of games than others. The same can be said for console, PC, phones, whatever.

RE: Yeah, right..
By corduroygt on 3/15/2013 2:25:53 AM , Rating: 1
How many bluetooth gamepads have been sold and are being used in this manner? Disregard the ones that are being used with PS3's lol...

Multi-touch can very well be an acceptable method to play mobile games. iOS store is filled with many examples which are NOT kiddy crap like you say. Check out the following apps on iOS:

1. Infinity Blade
2. Starbase Orion First Contact (Awesome Civilization/Master of Orion clone)
3. Civilization revolution
4. Scribblenauts
5. Flick Football
6. Score! Classic Goals
7. New Star Soccer
8. Plague Inc
9. The Walking Dead
10. Space Agency

Now STFU, since you're obviously too ignorant about mobile games and stuff that can be made good with touch controls.
Probably because most of these games aren't available on Android, you don't even know them.

No other tablet has that many tablet optimized apps or the hardware capable of driving it well. Not even close. The Nexus 10 doesn't even have enough horsepower to scroll the desktop or web pages smoothly, let alone anything more graphically intensive.

Not like it matters, most Android tablet apps boil down to rearranged phone apps, not tablet apps designed and optimized specifically for big screens with things like multi-column UIs, etc.

Some may like the higher res Nexus 10 for $399, Some may like adaptability like the Asus transformer. Some (like me) may like any # of 7 inchers for $199 or less. I prefer a 7-8 inch tablet, perfect size. Compare the Nexus7 to the iPad mini and its an easy choice. For $130 less, the Nexus 7 smokes the iPad mini. That would change with a retina iPad mini though. I would certainly consider it... Although, by the time that comes, we will be looking at a 1080p NExus 7 vs a retina iPad mini that probably costs the same $130 more, but that remains to be seen.

Faster hardware, one of the best screens of any kind on the market, and the best tablet optimized app selection out there. These are objective advantages. Right now price is the single thing other tablets have going for them, and spending less to get much less in return isn't my preference.

Yes, if you want to spend less and only do light email and web then there are cheaper tablets out there absolutely. I actually think the Nexus 7 is really good considering what you get for $200. There are compromises that go along with the price, nothing for you to get all flustered over.

RE: Yeah, right..
By retrospooty on 3/13/2013 6:38:38 PM , Rating: 2
Who's flustered? I just posted a simple comment on why people might choose other models and you asked ""What non-iPad tablet is better? What has better performance, battery life, or applications? " which wasn't at all my point. I get why you like it, the iPad is a good tablet, great res, speed, apps but your impression of what Android has to offer could really use an update. It has alot of good things going on these days and a WAY awesome pipeline of things that are coming.

RE: Yeah, right..
By TakinYourPoints on 3/13/2013 7:32:38 PM , Rating: 2
Yes, there are other cheaper alternatives out there, absolutely. No argument there, its all about if you are ok trading for choppy performance on the 10" models (the Nexus 7 is good though) and having way less third party support. If you're happy with a less capable device then go for it, that's why different prices exist.

And believe it or not, I have beef with the iPad Mini. Great size but it won't be worth it at its price until the screen gets 2x its resolution. It'll happen but right now I can't recommend it, but I also have super high standards for displays. I also have an issue with the current iPad in that it is too thick/heavy from what it should ideally be. My gold standard for tablet ergonomics is still the Kindle e-reader. With the iPad 3 they traded for a larger battery from the iPad 2 to drive that retina display, and I'd like to see the next update focus less on boosting performance (it is fast enough by now) and more on efficiency, thus reducing the size and weight.

The next tablet purchase for my family will be another iPad; getting the wife a newer one and giving the old one to the kids. For us its about platform not form factor we are happily embedded in Apple iTunes media.

No fears for Android. But Windows?
By nikon133 on 3/13/2013 4:34:05 PM , Rating: 2
I have no doubts that Android tablets will repeat formula of Android phones. Even with slightly (but nowhere close to how Apple followers try to describe it) negative aspect of more fragmentation than with heavily controlled iPad segment, there is obvious advantage of multiple models, designs, features and prices. It is almost an axiom. DOS did it. VHS did it. Windows did it.

I'm more curious about Windows tablets. They are trying to capture best of both worlds - controlled environment but multiple vendors, models, specs and price points - but they are also quite late to the race. RT tablets seem to be quite irrelevant, but if our customers' interest is any sign - since lower-end, Atom based Pro models started appearing, we are actually seeing decent interest in such tablets through our supply channel. iPads and Android tablets were and still are in BYO category, but we are actually receiving business orders for W8Pro tablets, trials are successful so far and some of our bigger customers are planning to provide likes of ThinkPad Tablet 2 for significant parts of their workforce (usually but not limited to sales departments).

However, I'm not convinced that will open them doors to consumers. It is easy to see advantages for tablet that can fully be integrated in company's network, but domain, group policies, central management and suites of standard business applications are not really of importance for majority of customers. I would expect that they will eventually leak from businesses to customers - hasn't PC done that back in the days, taking homes from likes of Amiga, Atari ST..? - but I'm still not convinced. Android and iOS have such an advantage.

Clover Trail Win8 tablets are awesome, I'm very impressed with Samsung ATIV Smart PC 500 and there are many others. They can work as iPad, full touch, a few very cool touch games (Judge Dredd is my favorite now), youtube, web (WITH FLASH!!!111! and silverlight too!), email and all, and then you can convert them to a full workhorce PC with full Office 2013 and all your Windows work apps and all the light/casual Windows games you want, Takin would LOVE his favorite FTL, I'd love PvZ and so on and so forth.

BUT! This is just the tip of the iceberg. You know that Intel is coming up with new 22nm Atom platform named Bay Trail and they also going to bring Haswell next year, right? With Haswell and Bay Trail Win8 tablets will become even more killer devices than they are now.

Cheapo Atom tablets will become much faster and probably 4x faster in graphics with Bay Trail, and Haswell will bring 8 hours of battery life to high end superfast Pro tablets, like Surface Pro 2. iPad has no chance against these I think. Even now Clover Trail tablets present the best alternative to iPad, MUCH better than Android tablets, but you just wait until Intel is up to speed on their mobile chips, they have very aggressive plans on beating ARM into the shit pit where it belongs, and emballmer with windows 8 and 9 is firmly on Intel's side now after epic fail with Windows RT.

So don't worry about Windows please. If they ALREADY work as better tablets than Android, then you can imagine what'll happen when Intel finally provides proper Atoms and Cores next year. Woohoo! Gotta be exciting!

Agreed completely.

When I say "Android and iOS advantage", I think of them being first on the market - and not just by a few months or even a single year. Personally I don't see much if any other advantages.

But on a consumer market, where recommendation from friend or relative who already has device means a lot, that is huge disadvantage. If they do manage to do well in business, this might prove some leverage in consumer market too - as people will be exposed to them at work, so that would, to some degree at least, work same as seeing device at your friends' or relatives' hands.

That being said, Clover Trail tablets are already great, and I'm really eager to see what will next gen bring. I didn't have chance to spend any significant time with ATIV, but we have a few ThinkPad Tablets 2 and businesses we work with prefer them for one single reason - proper docking station. This gives them capability to use tablets as light desktop/thin client machines in office (big monitor, LAN, kbd and mouse plugged to dock) and great mobility when out and about, without sacrificing compatibility and forcing them to convert documents between office and mobile use.

Yup, it never fails. Even on articles that have zero to do with Apple, if its a company that competes with Apple in any way one of the following trolls will be there to try and crap on it.

Tony Swash (the illustrious troll #1).
Takinyourpoints
Messele
xti
Jack Barton
Testerguy
Nortel
several others as well...

That depends on how you classify as #1. If it's install base, you might have a point, but if it's software quality and quantity, Android is nowhere near iOS, and the gulf is even wider in the tablet scene.

RE: Deja Vu
By retrospooty on 3/13/2013 5:57:15 PM , Rating: 2
I would be referring to what you get. More options, better features. I really dont care about profit, or sales #'s.

For example

Android platform advantages over IOS
- Larger Screens
- Higher resolution screens with better DPI
- Better Edge to Edge display (no giant iBezel)
- Micro SD card
- Removable batteries
- Waterproof models
- NFC
- Mini HDMI port
- Better Notifications
- Faster Voice search
- Better Mapping software
- Widgets
- Live wallpaper
- Wireless Charging (withoout and special adaptors)
- Plays HD content without downscaling
- Multi user support
- Multi Window support
- pop up browser(in a window)
- Flexibility in OS (Tons of Custom ROM's, etc)
- Flexibility in hardware (qwerty models, waterproof models, removable batteries, larger models, smaller models, high end models, mid range models, cheap models)
- Micro USB (Like every other phone made by every other manufacturer on planet Earth for the past four years, except of course, Apple)

Coming soon, Eys scrolling.

That sounds like alot.

Then stop stating your opinions as facts. Also better mapping software is simply not true, because:

1. Google maps is on iOS.
2. I was in Europe a month ago, and guess what Google Maps did not support turn by turn navigation in that country, whereas Apple Maps did.

Also a lot of the advantages you listed are stuff that people with lives don't care about. Such as microSD card, removable batteries, waterproof, noticing downscaling on 1280x720 vs 1138x640 on a 4-5" screen, Live wallpapers, mini HDMI, multi user (LOL), multi window (on a 5" screen lol), etc.

Also Micro USB LOL (who cares since all phones come with the appropriate cable, and micro USB cables are usually weak, finicky and hard to insert with the right side up.)

iOS has its faults but it's far closer to being an ideal mobile OS compared to Android. It only needs a few features added and it's there. Also Mic

Stop stating my opinion as facts? Arent you doing the same? I post a rather long list of things you can get on Android but you can't on Apple, you eliminate a few that you don't personally care about, fine then it's not for you... But everything on that list is real. You may not personally care about them all, but don't act like they don't exist. What that spells out is that apples OS is inflexible. You can have their vanilla solution the way they want it and nothing else. There are no options, zero. If you like a small screen with low res and dont care about that LONG list of missing features then go for it. Sounds like the iPhone is good for you. It's not good enough for me it's not even close.

RE: Deja Vu
By corduroygt on 3/14/2013 3:14:49 PM , Rating: 2
When talking about something is #1, you should say what it is #1 in. I agree that Android is #1 in options and choices, and install base. iOS is #1 in software catalog and stability.

RE: Deja Vu
By retrospooty on 3/15/2013 8:28:50 AM , Rating: 2
Its the best mobile OS period. Best UI, best features, best everything. The software catalog is NOT the OS. It is better than Androids by a small margin, but for all you give up, I dont see a single draw. Stability? I suppose if you are looking at older phones, but JellyBean is stable. It has arrived, you should take a closer look.
