Hyundai's Veloster will get 40 mpg on the highway without the use of hybrid technology

We've talked about Hyundai's Veloster on a few occasions here at DailyTech. These days, many companies are using expensive electric motors and lithium-ion batteries to achieve 40+ mpg in their vehicles. Hyundai, however, is sticking to lightweight platforms and advanced engines to achieve the same feat.

The latest "40 mpg" addition to the family is the 2012 Veloster, which is quite odd being that it has three passenger doors in addition to a traditional rear hatch. The driver's side of the vehicle has a single door, while the passenger's side of the vehicle has a shortened front door and a small rear door to aid in accessing the rear seat. 

When it comes to the vehicle specifications, Hyundai has managed to keep curb weight to a minimum at just 2,584 pounds in 6-speed manual form. The six-speed, dual-clutch transmission (DCT) version weighs in at 2,657 pounds. Power comes from a 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine that develops just 138 hp.

Hyundai says that a Veloster equipped with a DCT will get up to 40 mpg on the highway. The company, however, has not disclosed EPA city ratings for either transmission or highway ratings for the Veloster equipped with a 6-speed manual.

The Veloster will come standard with a 7" touch screen with integrated Pandora Radio support. Hyundai's new BlueLink telematics system will also be included as standard equipment.

Now we come to the styling. The Veloster is likely to draw love it/hate it comments from people who lay eyes on it. While its style is certainly distinctive, it's asymmetric design, bulges, and gaping front bumper are sure to find a fair share of critics.

However, there are two things that play into the Veloster favor. First off, Hyundai officials state that the vehicle will start at a relatively affordable $17,000, which is not bad for a sporty vehicle with good EPA numbers. The second "plus" for the Veloster won't come until sometime next year. Edmunds Inside Line reports that the Veloster will get the a turbocharged version of the 1.6-liter engine good for around 175hp -- the Sonata Turbo's 274hp, 2.0T engine is also a distant possibility. That should make for quite a little "pocket rocket", but won’t do Hyundai any favors when it comes to EPA numbers.

Yeah seems like Hyundai has been doing that for awhile right down to the H symbol. There will be a time when we'll wonder who's copying who.

I like it!!!! 138hp at 2500-2600 lbs reminds me of my old 92 Sentra SE-R. And with rumors of the 274hp engine coming too?? I got goosebumps! Nav, DCT, and 40 mpg without any BS hybrid crap all at a little heavier weight than my old SE-R too. This car must be a featherweight without all of the safety, emissions, and other modern amenities onboard!! Which makes me really curious how they were able to accomplish that. Some aluminum? A smidge of carbon fiber? Selling at a loss perhaps?

I wonder if my wife will like it?

Just read the Edmunds Inside Line. Probably more than likely a 1.6L turbo but who cares! It'll probably get the same mpg as the NA car and be quicker to boot.

138hp from 1.6l is pretty good. I wonder if its direct injection? They'd have to have some trick cam timing to do that otherwise, which would require premium fuel.

I'm still not ready to consider a Korean car, especially after a $1000 brake overhaul on my sister's 2003 Elantra. If the steel hadn't been such low quality (or better resistant...zinc platting...for her salty Chicago winters) the rotors might not had fused to the spindles and literlly shattered as they were pulled off with a press.

The styling, safety and value are all there for Hyundai and Kia, but the long term reliability is still unknown, and that plays a huge role in resale.

Long term reliability is actually there now and has been there for a while (at least for Hyundai). Also, resale value for the Sonata is also near the top of its class (thanks to the 2011 redesign).

My 2001 Hyundai Santa Fe turns 10 in May. Other than the odd electronic sensor going wonky (especially the tranny sensor during the first 4 years) it's been a really solid car. No major mechanical problems at all. I would definitely recommend Hyundai and even consider another one.

And that's a 2001. The models starting from 2007 blow the doors off the older models in terms of style, luxury, standard features, and performance while maintaining cost-effectiveness over their competition.

It does, click on the 2012 Veloster link in the article for more info. Wife likes how it looks so we'll be visiting the showroom this fall or whenever it's available for a drive. If this car had RWD, I'd be all over it like stink on sh!t.

WHY are there people that are concerned about resale?
You buy the car, drive it until you're done with it and then you get rid of it.
Since this one starts out at a low cost the resale will be low. It's a given.

Why worry about the amount of cash you'll get after you're done with it? It's the cost to get it NOW that is a concern!

Good point, but I think the constant reference to resale value stems from the issue of quantifying how long a car will last in a way that can be easily conveyed through a simple statement. I mean do you ever hear someone say that a car will last x amount of years? Not really. The best way to somehow quantify that seems to be a mention of resale value. It speaks to the reliability of the make/model.

Someone else might have a better insight, but that is how I see it. I've always held on to cars (and other crap for that matter) as long as is economically possible.

People are talking about resale value as a percentage of that low cost to buy it new. The comments about resale value are typically about value retention.

Maybe because, as the other car companies have constantly gained ground in looks, performance and reliability, it's the only thing they have to brag about?

Who cares whether you have higher resale value, if you paid more to begin with? If you pay $25K, and get 15K resale, and I paid $17K and get 7K resale, we've both lost $10K of value....but you paid more interest on your loan, didn't you?

Yes,
The resale value could drop because the economy is in the dumps, or you smashed the hell out of the car and now it's on the cars record, or you didn't keep clean and no one wants to buy your garbage car.

Resale value means nothing.

But if you're thinking that Hyundai is loosing ground, you haven't been paying attention.

True, but those are all very specific outliers. In the average (as is the wonderful thing with averages), the resale value will also take into account your garbage car, and someone else's immaculately cleaned and maintained car.

So any crumminess that YOUR car brings into the mix is offset by some marvelousness that someone else brings into the mix.

Rotors are usually cast iron, not steel. As you noticed, cast iron is a lot more brittle than steel :-)

Yeah... I would think the 1.6L would be the logical choice.

Imagine 250+ HP in such a small package. They would be nearing 10 lbs/hp!

A Mazdaspeed3 has ~260 is I recall, but curb wieght is 3200.

I'd prefer them to go --> 200 hp out of the 1.6 and keep the curb wieght less than 2,700 lbs. Would still be faster than a GTI and retain most of the low cost of the base model + really low mass.

No everyone agrees with each other. I would take this over a Prius any day, especially with the price difference. Although it does look a little strange.

If I was buying a new car in about a year this would be high on my list to check out. Looks like a fun car at a good price.

All subjective, but at least they tried something, rather than just going for the uber bland as Toyota did with Prius.

I'm not saying that its' a style icon either, by the way. Seems like a chubby cross between a VW Scirocco and a Ford Focus ST.

Each to their own tho :o)

You should take a look at some of Hyundai's earlier models if you want to see ugly.

Its not a bad looking car IMO but I wouldn't call it a family car. Looks like its geared more for the young and single crowd.

Uh, no. My 2001 Jetta TDI just got 46mpg on a roadtrip between Seattle and Portland a few months ago, and my car needs some serious work. It weighs more than this, and is using an old engine design, not the new one. A modern turbo diesel would rack up some impressive mileage numbers in a light weight car.

It we assume the Velostar really WILL get 40 MPG on the HWY. Putting in a similar diesel engine should net ~48 MPG HWY due to the higher energy content of diesel alone. It is entirely possible if you wish to reduce power somewhat (say from 140->110 that would match the CRZ power to wieght) that 50+ HWY could occur. Imperial numbers would be in the 60s (for diesel) and the 50s for gasoline.

two problems that tend to plague Hyundai:

1) The wheels on the Veloster are 18" -- how is that too small?
2) Hyundai's bread and butter models (Sonata, Elantra, Tucson, Santa Fe) are built in the U.S.

prolly he meant accent, such crappy car must be built somewhere in haiti slums or somethin, I can't believe such majorly focked up automatic transmissions can even exist, not mentioning constant fogging of the windows inside until you turn on hot air blower full on and cook yourself right in there just to make focking windows to defog at last, so don't touch accent shotty pile of crap... dunno about other korean shot but I'd be careful now after experience with that focked up 2008 accent, man this company is pretty focked... but not as much as russian lada hehe. that was a compliment.

Again, look at Hyundai models from 2007 or later. Samsung also used to make crappy TVs. Now they're a technology leader. LG is another Korean conglomerate corporation that used to make low-cost crap back in the day under the name Goldstar, before merging with its founding company Lak-Hui (Lucky).

I bought a new 2007 Hyundai Santa Fe (SE equivalent) while living in Korea and then bought a used one after returning to the US. For the most part, they are the same except the one made in Korea had more standard features included compared to the US equivalent. However, the Korean cars don't have cruise control as an option, but that has to do with the size of Korea and traffic conditions.


Successor to the Honda CRX

So Hyundai, not Honda, will be offering a spiritual successor to the CRX. No, the CR-Z is not it.

The Veloster in more about style than ultimate fuel economy. Kudos to Hyundai for not saddling it with a mandatory CVT.

Yeah, I'd love to see Honda make a CR-Z without the hybrid drivetrain, I'd bet they wouldn't lose that much mileage and would have a pretty awesome car. But for now I've got my Fit that'll last me for years and years.

The Mazda RX-8 that had mysterious "third-door" on its sports car. Hyundai has come a long way since it's 80's - early 90's years as being a reliable car built in Korea, but come to think of it, so it KIA. They're built there too and during the last few years or so, KIA has turned leaps and bounds into a serious competitor here in the States. A couple of people (like my dad) would never buy let alone drive a KIA, but I wouldn't count them out. Same thing goes for Ford as well, their reliability has much improved. All in all, car companies NEED to improve on the cars if they were to remain competitive anyways. It's a given, especially since we know how bad press can wreck the reputation of a car company (Toyota, I'm talking about you!)
