stupid poll?
By Murloc on 7/8/2010 3:14:56 PM , Rating: 3
I'm sure there are some people under 18 reading this, and more than enough people over 49.
Why are they not considered?

Because they fall outside the target area for selling pricey electronics. Kids don't have money and old people don't care.

Couldn't disagree more about the kids part. When I was 15, I had a job with no living expenses. Almost ALL of my money went to computer parts.

Not sure why you were rated down, I also had a job and spent plenty of money on electronics and computers before I was 18. Although, with the craptastic parenting these days mommy and daddy buy and do everything for their kids so I think we were the minority.

i have to agree, i see less and less kids on the newegg eggxpert forums who actually use money they earned to build a computer, their parents just toss them 1k here and there. Lazy bastards imho
I worked outside all summer just to build my first pc back in the day of socket a.

It has always been this way, when I grew up we had kids who worked and bought things themselves and we also had spoiled rich kids whos parents bought them everything. I saved my allowance for weeks to buy the Luke Skywalker planet hoth action figure for 5$ while my neighbor down the road did nothing and had the GI Joe aircraft carrier (along with every other GI Joe imaginable). Same shit different generation, the information age just makes it that much more visible.

I will say this, I think they age that parents stop supporting/spoiling their kids is steadily on the rise as I see more and more 20+ still living at home and eating moms food. When I grew up you moved out as soon as you graduated HS or turned 18. Parents helped out in times of need but not for a new graphics card.

I spend my money on drugs and alcohol. I didn't have a job either. I still worked 50+ hours a week at my dad's businesses from time to time. But priorities were drugs and alcohol; chicks digged that too.
But I am sure that even in your case, when you were 15, you didn't buy $200 CPU and lapped it right out of the box. Generally people 25+ can piss $200-500 on stuff and junk it the next day; a 15-year old can't.
I would speculate that people between 25-50 represent at least 75% of the market for electronics/gadgets. We tend to be the ones more likely to buy the stuff for the teenage punks than they would on their own. As a matter of fact my dad still makes more money in a developing contry than I do in the US wearing a suit and waving my licence and degrees. Of course he doesn't care about computers as long as they work well enough for him to skype. I think the poll got it spot on!

If they read this site I would change "don't care" to "experienced enough to not be sucked in by gimmicky fads".

Hey, I'm 55 and I get to fix all the problems that your "target groups" can't handle. Most of them don't keep up with tech - they just want some new toy to amuse them or do a job! I bet there are heaps of us oldies who have non computing backgrounds who have had to integrate old (and new) hardware into systems. I've had young systems engineers who cant do anything unless you've told them how data is transfered from an old instrument. And I'm a research chemist... I've had the experts tell me how its impossible to run a VPN on a 64 bit system - from experts who run a supercomputer no less! I guess logging in from home on a 64 bit OS to their supercomputer wont hurt them I guess!

I'm really shocked. I've been waiting for such a poll or stat to come out on the average age of Anandtech viewers. I suppose maybe most of the people who comment are 24 or below. I post comments in the past that are full of facts, references, sources and I ask blarringly obvious questions that none of the 100+ commentors asked... yet I get ridiculed. Whether its about the real cost of Nuclear power and its waste... or the fact that some technologies have been put up on the shelf just to be slowly milked for all of its profit for the next 10 years... which stiffels the advance of technology. It never fails to amaze me how many angry, ignorant, immature and outright wrong responces I get to my comments.

By CptTripps on 7/13/2010 1:45:24 PM , Rating: 3
In all honesty, it's highly likely that the young crowd posts more where my group (35) likes to read a few articles/comments and then move along to the next one?

Just a thought.

With 5,000 only responses I don't think we can really assume that the numbers represent the readership here.

I think there should be an IQ test.
By JonnyDough on 7/11/2010 6:54:01 AM , Rating: 2
Rank us on our IQ and personal skills. Not our age.

Also, if you're using this for sales demographic research you're morons. People over 30 are probably not going to even bother "voting" on their age - although I'm not sure I'm even correct on this because its scary (and I mean terrifying) how many 40+ women are glued to a PC screen playing Farmville...

I do think that we need to break it down into 5 year spans. There's a huge difference between say 25 and 30 year old's mentalities.

By MrJustin5 on 7/11/2010 3:35:38 PM , Rating: 2
Good points. Although what 19 or 23 year old would know their IQ or even if they did - answer it honestly? I seriously agree with the 5-year increment. There is a big difference between 25 and 30. Also, you're right: Most older people dont even bother to vote. Let alone read the vote question. Its probably ignored along with the ads. Good point about Farmville. Even my girlfriend who HATES video games, she cant even play Super Mario World on an OLD SNES because she dies every 30 seconds, she plays Farmville on Facebook. Notice my comment below about the immature responces and the ridiculing I recieve from my comments. I really think there should be some sort of "maturity quiz" or something to weed out all the irrelevant and nonsensical commentors.

Should everyone over 50 not come to this site?

I'm over seventy years old, and have been visiting Anandtech.com since its inception, reading DailyTech from those daily visits, after Anand Lal Shimpi added it to the site.
I'm not a "poster" ... rarely look at comments .. BUT
have always appreciated Dailytechs news keepimg me abreast of tech news ..
Next time you do a poll ... add 50+ ... you might be surprised how many of us "Old Farts" still can read & keep up with the latest technology!

Why do folks care about age?
By callmeroy on 7/14/2010 9:03:52 AM , Rating: 2
Probably the best reason is for advertising purposes as far as the site goes...but why do people, as in general every day to day life (especially women) get so bent out of shape over how old they are or act like its a government secret.

Look long ago I realized some facts of life that I just have to accept and deal with...

1) One day I'll die.
2) I will be taxed through out my lifetime.
3) I will get older, as I age over time my body will change..

I'm only 36 right now...but age itself I don't worry about...what I worry about more is the CONDITION I'm in...there's people that are nearly twice my age I've seen at the gym who honestly look fantastic...there's a woman at the gym who is 53, she has a body that rivals young 30-something women who are in good shape.

On the other end of the extreme there are teenagers who I see that probably couldn't even keep up with me (at 36) in a sprint.

So its all about taking care of yourself...worry about your health...because THAT's what you can help guide and control...don't worry about your age...not a damn thing you can do to control that.

I'm suprised this rather useless poll is still here. Might as well just had two options. Are you:
- alive
- dead
