HP will cut more than 24,000 jobs as it gets ready to bring in EDS

Hewlett-Packard announced plans to cut 24,600 jobs, about 7.5 percent of its workforce, over the next three years as the company begins to integrate Electronic Data Systems into its business.  The company will offer lucrative severance packages, counseling and new job placement services for employees who are being released.

After the $13.9 billion HP acquisition of EDS, most of the 24,000 job cuts will come from EDS's job forces, though HP will slowly replace half of the jobs in new business sectors.  Half of the job cuts are expected to be U.S.-based jobs.  Corporate overhead positions like information technology, human resources, marketing, real estate, legal and finance will be hit especially hard when the job cuts begin; HP employees have reportedly been warned.

HP will "replace roughly half of these positions over the next three years to create a global workforce that has the right blend of services delivery capabilities to address the diversity of its markets and customers worldwide."

HP purchased the company in an attempt to help compete with IBM, who is the only company now leading HP in computer services.  HP was ranked fifth overall, and received an important boost in the United States and United Kingdom, where EDS was stellar.

HP has 210,000 total employees worldwide, who help bring in more than 38 billion dollars in revenue per year, and the EDS acquisition will help the Palo Alto, CA-based company expand its technical outsourcing for HP and others.

“HP now has the broadest technology capabilities in the market to meet customer needs today and in the future,” said Mark Hurd, HP chairman and chief executive officer. “HP has a strong track record of making acquisitions and integrating them to capture leading market positions. We will deliver on the promise of HP and EDS for our customers and shareholders.”

The deal was first announced in May, and the $13.9 billion deal was finalized last month.

More IT layoff's

As EDS corporate office is near Dallas, this is just what the DFW metroplex needs: 6000+ more laid off IT workers.

When the web bubble burst and within a few months after Sept 11 2001 economic effects arrived, we had system/network admin's fighting over entry-level helpdesk jobs. The IT market here never really recovered fully. I remember seeing a guy at an intersection with a sign "MCSE, will work for food", and that is no joke.

And now EDS is downsizing.. this is just delightful. Hello $14/hr wages for all IT workers, skilled or not..

Yeah, it's pathetic. It's not only in the IT world that jobs are being cut. Hell look what happened yesterday with the whole Bank of America crap.

And Bush is telling you: "I--I believe the economy is strong!"

Like hell it is, if jobs are being laid off, especially in the IT world, it's not at all strong!

Jobs are always being cut and gained in different areas. The problem with IT jobs is they're redundant. Some can be kept but when companies merge there's no need for the acquired companies main IT staff. And with software further automating a lot of tasks IT guys used to do, less and less IT staff is needed. And the fact is IT staff are a dime a dozen. Especially ones with just an MCSE.

Our company recently got bought out. Our local IT guys are all still here. In fact our overall employee losses were quite low.

I'm never happy to see people lose their jobs. But its an unfortunate reality. And don't blame Bush for whats happening to banks. They brought this crap on themselves. Yes its the little guys who suffer the consequences but where one fails, another will pop up. Personally I'm pissed that the government has now put you and me liable for what happens to Freddie and Fannie. Our tax dollars now get to support a failed business to keep it afloat.

Jobs getting cut sucks, but it's an unfortunate reality when it comes to mergers. It's impossible to have two companies merge with zero overlap.

That's one of the wonderful things about being a state employee IT staff. The wages aren't as competitive as in the private sector, but there is very strong job security.

Plus no matter how hard you screw up, you never have to worry about getting fired. Leave a laptop lying around with half a million SSNs in plain unencrypted text? No problem.

Anybody who blames Bush for this needs to give their heads a serious inspection. This kind of thing has been a long-time coming and is due much more to various global movements that have meant (and will mean even more) some serious changes for North America. Bush didn't prevent it but neither did, for example, Clinton. In fact Clinton accelerated the process. In any case, if some jobs are increasingly outsourced out of the US and wages fall do not be surprised.

Bush isn't responsible for HP buying EDS? Hard to believe!

P.S. - What I mean is that these layoffs aren't an "outsourcing" thing. One of the main points of a big company buying another is that there is higher efficiency that theoretically makes the whole better than the two parts -- and part of that has to do with functional redundancies -- which seems to be the thrust of this announcement.

Come to Denver. Better climate, and a glut of IT jobs.

Chicago has even more IT jobs available, but I think that's because nobody wants to work there.

I know I don't. Drove through it on the way to and the way from Milwaukee, WI and that was enough for me.

I took a vacation to Chicago last month. I thought it was neat city. Lots of great architecture. Didn't drive at all though; I took the L.

I like sunshine. When I finish school I'm headed south. You can have the northeast, Chicago, Denver, etc.

I went from South Carolina to western PA. We DEFINITELY don't get much sunshine here in Pittsburgh, but I'm not missing the 110 degree days.

Denver has 300 days of sunshine a year, and about 7 months of awesome weather a year. It is no comparison to Chicago.

You never stop fearmongering do you? My own company (Houston-based, very close to Dallas) is paying almost five times that now. They just hired five more in the past two weeks. They were looking for a couple more, but couldn't find qualified applicants.

The IT sector has as close to full employment as any industry can have. Thinking wages are going to fall like a rock is just stupidity.

HelloKeith,

I have a better idea. Instead of feeling sorry for your self, you need to understand that it might be wise for you to move out of the area. Sometimes you have to man up and make the hard decision. Stop complaining about the lack of jobs in one area. This is not a systemic issue of lack of jobs rather a overflooding of an area with the people of similiar skill sets due to a layoff.

Start looking elsewhere in the state and/or other states. I believe you will find more job opportunities than you can respond.

Plus ---- MCSE, What is this 1995? How about getting a four year degree to back-up that certificate.

The only out of work person is the one which is not looking hard enough for a job.

HP job cuts EDS

So, roughly 12,000 U.S. jobs will be cut. What HP has to remember is to not get rid of expertise and experience. If HP starts to fire only at the bottom, safeguarding the jobs of management instead, as is usually the case, then it will be for naught. The engineers and the repair technicians, those with the most intimate knowledge of the product, should be spared. Likewise, the salesmen who know the customers' needs intimately should be spared, least the old customer become dissatisfied with the new organisation and leave for IBM.

Eh? In any large corporate merger, redundant management is always the first to go. Look at Exxon/Mobil, SBC/AT&T, AOL/Time Warner, etc. Even when AMD bought ATI, the first to get pinkslips were upper management....though it's usually announced along the lines of "leaving to pursue other interests".

I think between this and the layoffs yesterday there is about 100,000 more people who need a job today and there is an absolutely wonderful opportunity in the manufacturing sector!!! You know where you actually make products to sell instead of trading around with other peoples money and products and losing it! Nope, apparently not everyone is good at desk jobs so back to the farm with you. Grow some corn, drill some holes, make us some better cars, and you can service the floors with a mop while your at it.
