Masterchief is the the most popular choice of last year

Like it is with console hardware, game makers look to the holiday season as a time for major sales of its most anticipated game titles.

Even with Nintendo hardware making up more than half of all systems sold in 2007, the top game of the year belonged to Microsoft. Halo 3 sold a total of 4.82 million copies in 2007, making it also the best selling Xbox 360 title of the year.

Halo 3 already had massive sales secured before even launch, with 1.7 million pre-orders before a single copy sold. Upon launch Halo 3 raked in $170 million on the first day, making it the biggest launch in video game history. During the first week following the release of Halo 3, consumers went on to spend over $300 million on the game alone.

700,000 units behind Halo 3 in second place was Wii Play at 4.12 million sold. Although the game itself received lackluster reviews from game critics, consumers continued to snap up Wii Play for its inclusion of a Wii Remote controller.

The top selling game throughout December was Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare for Xbox 360, which sold 1.47 million copies. Super Mario Galaxy was second with 1.4 million, and Guitar Hero III for PS2 third with 1.25 million.

That is so ridiculously condescending. I bet you're yet another "zomg fps on t3h consolez? shuld be ilegalz!!1!!"

The Halo series has its merits - obviously - and has sold well thanks to them. In terms of multiplayer, they have a unique feel to them compared to other games. The single player is...meh. I'm not going to say it's the greatest bunch of games ever, because they certainly aren't, but they are good, and fun, and easy to get into.

Hm, a mouse-and-keyboard elitist? :P

I like Halo because it's fun and easy to play (and I'm quite good at it now). I tried getting into Counterstrike back in the day and couldn't even survive long enough to figure out how to kill someone. Different strokes for different folks, eh?

Simply having a Keyboard and Mouse will make you elite agianst any FPS gamers with a controller.

Pending of course that you are skilled enough to use both at the same time.

There's the FragFX for the PS3. According to them, it supports all games. I've never tried it though. Keyboard/mouse should be a control option on more games though as you said.

Uhh, there are no PC players of COD on XBox Live. COD does not include cross platform play.

Say's who? I call seniority on you. I go back to the original FPS games (Castle Wolfenstein 3D, Doom, Pathways Into Darkness, Marathon). The standard then was to only use a keyboard. When games first started supporting the mouse, I could still beat anyone I played who used the mouse. Eventually, I had to change to mouse control to keep up.

So who's the "real" FPS player? I would argue me, who could hold his own with a significant disadvantage.

One might argue the same about console shooters. They're closer to keyboard-only controls and it certainly takes more skill to be good with that control scheme. Anyone can line up a mouse.

I've played just about every significant FPS shooter out there, except Crysis and the newest UT. Halo's multiplayer gameplay ranks right up there among the best FPS games, along with Counterstrike, the original Unreal Tournament and Marathon. I suck at it compared to Counterstrike, but that doesn't keep it from being a great game.

I played Ultima Underworld. Sorry, no seniority over me :P

And I too played Wolf 3D and Doom shareware with just a keyboard. I don't remember when I moved to mouse and keyboard... probably when I finally got a mouse for my computer. I think it was 1996 when I got Windows 95 so that I could play X-Wing vs. Tie Fighter, that I probably got a mouse just to use Windows normally.

That doesn't change a thing though... M+K is superior control (and Halo multiplayer is pretty lame).

imho, there hasn't been a truly great fps on consoles since goldeneye for the n64.

halo is...lukewarm to me. it's decent, but it offers only a mid-road ability compared to some of its pc brotheren.

mmofps it isn't. rpg fps it isn't. survival/horror fps it isn't. there are better games in each of these genres. and i'm 100% convinced that if you play cod4 & ut3--halo offers absolutely nothing more to the player in terms of gameplay. and that's not even to mention how much player-supported mods there will be for ut3/ cod4 on PC vs halo3.

i watched the video. whatever. leave it to the halo fanbois to "hype" their beloved game. the pc gamers know the real score.

I think that Golden eye is one of the best FPS in history. I spent way more time playing Golden Eye with my friends that the time that I've spent in all the other FPS together.

Well that's because MS's attitude with Halo was incredibly condescending towards the consumer. It follows a oft trodden pattern. "Flesh out alien universe with graphical novels, 'collectable' action figures and limited edition tins containing making of documentaries and 'exclusive artwork', building background story to make the product seem far more than the sleight game it was based on".

Looking at the finished product. It in no way came up to scratch, and relied heavily on a marketing blitz and system fanboys to sell. Gears of War leaves it in the dust, both graphically, sonically and even gameplay wise (which is saying something) Halo feels unbelievably dated and the storyline is non existant. This is reflected in its disappointing sales figures. Yes they are disappointing. Does this even enter the top 10 of all time games sales? Nope. Its outside the top 20 actually. Pokemon has sold more than double what Halo 3 has sold...

The Xbox should find a new mascot as Halo has ALWAYS been a triumph of marketing over substance. When any of the titles launched, far superior alternatives were available. When you have all the little Xbox fanboys viciously defending their flawed product with all the entrenched support that involves, you have to laugh. Back when Halo 1 came out on the Xbox, *nobody* thought it was especially revolutionary. It was above average, nothing more. That it was the best of the launch titles available wasn't very hard. Now an inferior version comes out using the same core gameplay, hi-res graphics and textures with a record marketing spend, and look how different the reaction is! Entirely predictable and entirely sad to watch, especially when it outsells a genuinely revolutionary title released in the same time period which will be remembered fondly (and will eclipse it in total sales) long after Halo 3 is forgotten.

Im a fan of HALO AND UT .. but you've got it wrong.
Like alot of UT fans..Before I played Unreal Tournament back in 1999.. I played "Unreal" in 1998 ..

You'd expect Halo3 to affect Halo2 since 85% of Halo fans play on the Xbox, not the PC.

I wouldnt expect the same of UT whose main roots users began playing on PC 10yrs ago and had to continue playing on PC as it has not been a console game.. There are alot more people still gaming on PC's then gaming consoles. Consoles have gained tremendous ground, but PC's are still the king for online gaming for now.

only halo 3, wii play, and mario galaxy are the exclusive titles.

ps3 didn't even have an entry in here.

cod4 is better on pc, imho. and ut3>halo3 any day of the week for me.

so once again, pc+wii=FTW.

In regards to WOW, which is a massively popular game on the PC platform is absent from this article.

The subject of this article (nor the body) mentions that this is about Consoles only, since COD4 is also a PC title.
Can we get some clarification from a DT editor?

Also, I would love the day that a multiplatform game like COD4 or UT would allow console players against PC players to go head to head. WooT!!!

Considering the sales, im guessing you are probably one of the only guys playing it. ;)

Wii Remote
By Megadeth on 1/18/2008 8:52:24 AM , Rating: 4
I bought my second Wii remote by buying Wii Play.... I only played it through once... That was more than enough.

The other night I went to Gamestop to try and find 2 more Wii remotes.... They didn't have any, but they did have the Wii Play bundle. I told the guy that I already have Wii play, he told me that I could return Wii Play for $9... So, I bought 2... Went to my truck, opened the boxes then walked back in the store to return them and apparently, you can return the game for $11... I think I actually saved money.

My point is, as everyone already knows. Wii Play sold so well because it was so hard to find Wii Remotes otherwise.

RE: Wii Remote
By darkpaw on 1/18/2008 9:00:05 AM , Rating: 2
Perfect summary of why the game sold so much. It was the only way to get a second controller when I got my Wii. The game itself wouldn't even be worth a $5 download IMO.

RE: Wii Remote
By helios220 on 1/18/2008 9:59:18 AM , Rating: 2
I don't think anyone will really argue that Wii play sold because of it's gameplay. It's kind of amusing to play multiplayer, the shooting seemed kind of before Link's Crossbow Training showed me otherwise, and I had some fun with Tanks.

But all and all, it's kind of like the top selling games for last year were Halo 3, CoD4... and the Wiimote.

RE: Wii Remote
By jajig on 1/18/2008 10:32:30 AM , Rating: 2
Here in Australia the Wii Play bundle at Toys'R'us was $10 cheaper than the remote on its own. And that was without having to return anything!

Nah, 170$ is right. That's all the Halo franchise is worth...
</sarcasm>

In all honesty though, the reason Halo is so popular is because it gave console gamers a decent FPS that was playable with a controller, IMO.

RE: $170

Halo 3's $20 million advertising budget didn't hurt either. Then there was lots of press releases, media hype, and handing out plenty of swag.

I know it's popular...

...to decaler halo overrated... But the game shipped in september and still murdered the competition! You've got to respect that! Go go master cheif!
