Todd McFarlane designs Halo 3 Xbox 360 controllers

Halo 3 is poised as potentially the biggest Xbox 360 game of 2007, and Microsoft is making sure that everyone will join in on the craze once the game hits on September 25. Currently, the Xbox 360 controllers come in the conservative shades of black and white, but the peripheral will be getting an extreme makeover a few weeks before Halo 3’s release.

Spotted on GameStop’s online store for preorder are two wireless controllers and a headset in Halo 3 motif. The two wireless controllers come in either MasterChief or Covenant themes with artwork by Spawn comic book master Todd McFarlane (pictured above). The controllers will also come with an exclusive Halo 3 figurine from McFarlane Toys. The Halo 3 wireless controllers are priced at $59.99, representing a $10 premium over the more pedestrian black and white controllers.

For chatters on Xbox Live, a Halo 3 wireless headset will also be released alongside the controllers. The headset doesn’t feature any McFarlane artwork, but instead comes in a shade of green that would match well along with the MasterChief helmet from the Halo 3 Legendary Edition. It also will retail for $59.99, the same price as the regular white edition currently on the market.

For those who must have all things Halo 3, GameStop will be selling this week an appropriately themed Halo 3 Zune music player. The special edition grey music player will come preloaded with artwork, music and videos from the Halo trilogy, plus episodes from the Red vs. Blue machinima.

Halo franchise and Microsoft

Microsoft needs more franchises to capitalize on than just Halo. The XBOX feels like it is made around Halo.

If the beta was any indication, Halo will be huge again though

lol... is Halo going the way of Square enix franchise. Now if Microsoft holds a party like square enix party every year to get the fans in to show the game and then fool them to buying craploads of halo stuff. Square really makes a killing out of those party.

I'm not an Xbox 360 owner but even I know that Gears of War and Forza are big, exclusive franchises that they were/are milking.

They are nowhere promoting them as much as Halo. Actually Forza is a good example. Based on game reviews it is widely considered to be superior to Sony's Gran Turismo 4 yet Forza is an obscure title compared to GT. I know that there were "four" iterations of GT and the installed base of the PS2 dwarfs the XBOX but when I think of XBOX Halo is in my mind despite the fact that there are other great exclusives like Ninja gaiden and Forza or Gears of wars but when I think about PS it is not only about Metal gear, final fantasy, god of war or ratchet and clank.

I was thinking we'd get some controllers skinned to look like Spartan armor or look like weapons (or at least look something like the Zune player does) - having game art instead is just too tacky IMO.

I agree 100%. They look pretty tacky. I liked the Halo controllers for the original Xbox. They were Master Chief Green and with a Halo jewel instead of the Xbox logo. Cool and different, yet subtle. Of course those only came with the special edition Halo Xbox, but then they sold similar green ones for the same price as the normal black ones.

The new H3 headset looks pretty cool and much more like what I'd want in a H3 branded controller. And the Halo 3 Zune is awesome looking. Too bad it's a Zune :(

seems good enough

the controllers are too flashy for my liking and i have 2 already,so that wud be a complete waste of money

Imagine a Halo 3 ipod!!!!
It will never happen,but it wud be really cool if it did

I wouldnt pay the regular $49 price for these, much less a $10 premium at $59. In fact, these would probably have to be sitting in the "stinky bin" at big lots for $5 to make me consider buying these....then hiding them in my closet when i have company over so no one can see how stupid they really look.

I'd liken these to the Spongebob Squarepants PS2 controllers. I bought them cheap just to make my company use them when they came over...

Not quite sure if that's supposed to say "The" at the beginning there or what, but it's not exactly right as is.
