HTC Touch to be offered initially in black and "wasabi" green
HTC's touch-screen handset could give iPhone a run for its money

HTC Corp., maker of popular Microsoft Windows Mobile-based smart handsets, today announced the global launch of the HTC Touch; a mobile phone that makes use of touch screen navigation and Windows Mobile 6 Professional.

HTC says that its Touch phone represents extensive research and development into “fingertip control” TouchFLO technology that enables more efficient, natural and intuitive touch screen navigation.

Users simply sweep their finger up the display to launch an animated, three-dimensional interface comprising three screens: contacts, media and applications. The interface can be spun by swiping a finger right or left across the display, while web pages, documents, messages and contact lists can be navigated in a similar way, like the Apple iPhone. The HTC touch goes a little further though, as it is able to distinguish between finger and stylus input and responds accordingly.

“With the HTC Touch, access to your most commonly used content, contacts and features is only a simple finger flick away,” said Peter Chou, chief executive officer of HTC. “Mobile phone makers have done a great job of cramming ever-more exciting features into ever-smaller phones. But the way in which one accesses these increasingly sophisticated features has not kept pace. That ends today with the HTC Touch.”

Dimensions of the HTC Touch are 99.9mm (L) x 58mm (W) x 13.9mm (T) with a weight of 112g with battery. On board memory is 64MB RAM and 128MB ROM, plus a 1GB microSD storage card bundled in. The 16-bit LCD touch screen with backlight measures 2.8 inches and has a 240 x 320 resolution.

A rechargeable 1100 mAh Li-Ion battery will provide standby time of up to 200 hours and a talk time of up to 5 hours. The HTC touch will also be able to take pictures with its 2.0 megapixel CMOS color camera. Connectivity options include GSM/GPRS/EDGE Tri-band 900, 1800, 1900, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g and Bluetooth 2.0

The HTC Touch is now available in the UK and will be released later this month in Asia and throughout Europe. The North and Latin American version of the HTC Touch will be available in the second half of 2007.

I am surprised that it does not have 3G?

I'm not. The GSM networks in America are not 3G and I'm not sure about Europe but I doubt they have 3G yet. If you want faster speeds go CDMA.

I don't think this will be much of a competitor to the iPhone. You'd be better off with an HTC Wizard or the new Wing from TMobile (can't remember the HTC name.) The nice thing about the iPhone is the very large screen and thin profile. I want a screen that takes up the entire front of the device.

I have no idea about central Europe but all major cities at least here in Finland (home of Nokia) have 3G. I was just browsing Dailytech with my 3G phone.

You have got be kidding me right? In Europe and I mean basically all the 27 nations of the EU have 3g and Holland. Their 3g is HSUPA http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HSUPA
or faster.

Now Cingular which is GSM has a 3G network up and running (HSDPA with HSUPA soon) in the US and T-mobile has most equipment rolled out ready to go in a few months. Please don't speak when you clearly don't know what you're talking about.

Wow... what a coincidence, I just wrote this a second ago:

http://forums.macrumors.com/showpost.php?p=3711838...

Basically, even Spain has 3.6 Mbps speeds available for more than 70% of the population, later this year they'll be 7.2 Mbps speeds. Where as the US has like 20% of its population in EDGE speeds and the rest of the population at 12.2 Kbps (if there's coverage, you have to take into consideration that there's a lot of territory with no coverage at all). Sorry but... LOL!

What? There's no 3g in Europe and North America? Where have you been for the past 5 years?

By the way, did you guys got the "trick" that HTC did to make the screen look larger? The solution makes the device less classy. Maybe when I get one in hands I might find it more attractive, I don't know.

By by the way, this device reminds a lot the HP4150/4155 in terms of design. Looks a lot like those older iPaqs/not phone.

These days, I do not buy anything without a sliding/phisical keyboard.

I'm sure it will - my Cingular (HTC) 8525 has it now, so I'm sure this will too. I wish they went to a 640x480 screen though...

Oh and HTC, PLEASE release a Windows Mobile 6.0 ROM!

Cingular/AT&Ts data speeds are still behind that of Sprint's though.

But at least with AT&T you can have data and voice at the same time. With EV-DO, you have to choose either one. I do with that the 8525 had support for HDUPA through a firmware upgrade but that's wishing really hard.

Price?

P.S. - "Wasabi green"? Sigh... it's a 70's reprise. At least not calling it "Olive Green". Ick.

Well, with a verdant shade like that, you have to think of something creative in hopes of selling it (or just hope people somewhere think it looks cool)... either of those aforementioned choices sound more like something that Sony's PR department would come up with for one of their products :)

not close to the iPhone
By RamarC on 6/5/2007 5:48:59 PM , Rating: 1
I'm not a apple-holic but I do think the iPhone is a killer product.

The iPhone is more than gestures, a "3d" interface, and a glossy paint job. So anything that wants to compete with it on any level other than price had better bring some good tech with it.

The iPhone's threaded SMS message trail is brilliant. The natural phone interface is equally inventive and useful. The web browser that can handle "full-size" web pages with decent font support is equally impressive. The slick album cover flipping shows that the MP3 is not just a lame afterthought (like most phones). And I expect the iPhone to support plug-ins and other add-ons from the software community.

There are lots of cool-looking phones that turn into crap once you start using them for anything other than phone calls. I don't think the iPhone will be one of them.

same here , I also belive the iPhone is better than these new clones that doesn't bring anything new to the table, god knows I want a more responsive phone, and the iPhone's threaded SMS message trail is great !!!,plus all the other functions, the only thing I could say I don't like, is the lack of a memory slot, 8 gb of memory seems like a lot but it goes fast, and it could have been nice to have the option.

please

I have an HTC Wizard (aka cingular 8125)last years model and it beats the Iphone right now and its not out yet

the replacement for the wizard has what the iphone doesn't

3g
400mhz instead of 200mhz
a slide out keyboard (just wait till your in itty bitty touch screen hell)
so i have a movie storage card and a music 2gb apiece
I think but I'm not sure on this the 8525 has gps for moving map display
the iphone is the clone goombas not the other way around

my only complaint was i had to load a bootleg rom on mine to make it bluetooth stereo compliant so it would wirlessly stream music to my motorola ht825 stereo headset

if you load tcmp player and recode to divx you can capture tv with a home built HTPC and transfer tv and movies to it in case you get bored

and how many games do you think will be compatible with apples brand new os

any windows mobile compliant will run on mine

while i'm playing galaga you can play what games come on a mac anyway ?

how about close your eyes and what do you see

don't have an ipod don't see the point I've been using a converged device for a year now

come on break the apple braiwashing now

and as for the first poster

can you hear me now

cdma

please go play with your chevy

we got 3g here in Austin now

were do you live

Although I do agree that the EyePhone is more attractive than this one, I don't think that this one is a clone of Apple's product. In fact, to talk about clones, I think Apple is the one running to catch up the ball, WM devices have been there for years now and they weren't clones of nothing.

Funny, in another review, the article's writer said: HTC reveals a new smartphone with touchscreen display, just like the iPhone.

Same with Surface in another article: MS reveals table device with interface and touchscreen technology that reminds Apple's iPhone.

Try $650...
By Jammrock on 6/5/2007 2:06:12 PM , Rating: 3
All new HTC high-end jobs start at roughly $650. This might go a bit higher, but I doubt it. Fortunately you can expect them to drop under $350 within a 9-12 months, after rebates and new contract, etc.

But since HTC's are designed for businesses, this is considered acceptable. Unlike the iPhone price tag which is not considered a business-grade device, but consumer. At the moment at least.
