HTC reports unaudited profits

Most of HTC's early years were spent as a contract maker of phones that were rebranded by other companies. HTC started to brand devices with its own mark and has made a big name for itself over the last few years in the smartphone and feature phone industry.

HTC has announced its unaudited Q2 profits reports
The Wall Street JournalThe WSJ reports that the profits at HTC rose by an incredible 33 percent for the quarter. Total net profit for HTC for the quarter than ended on June 30 was $268 million USD (NT$8.64 billion). That amount works out to 37 cents per share. The profits are the largest posted by HTC since Q4 2007 when it reported NT$9.99 billion.

HTC revenue grew 58% to NT$60.53 billion in Q2 compared to NT$38.20 billion the previous year for the same quarter and NT$37.7 billion for Q1 2010. The significant growth in profits beat the estimates HTC had previously offered.

HTC issued a statement saying, "HTC's second-quarter earnings result is better than its original second-quarter guidance, [as] both June and second-quarter revenues continuously hit record highs."

Analyst Bonnie Chang from Yuanta Securities told
The WSJ, "We expect the strong momentum to continue in the second half of the year as HTC will launch another round of new smartphone models in the third quarter."

Chang predicts that handset shipments will hit 20 million this year for HTC compared to 12 million shipped in 2009.

HTC is currently the largest maker of smartphones using Microsoft mobile operating systems, but the company is better known today for its Android handsets. Popular Android handsets from HTC include the EVO 4G and the Droid Incredible. The EVO 4G is the first 4G handset on the market and is offered exclusively by Sprint.

you do realize that apple is still MASSIVELY successful and the momentum hasn't slowed with the Ipad and Iphone 4 right? Not a fan of the company or anything, but you have to admit that the prevalence of Android/HTC phones hasn't yet had a significant impact on Apple's revenues.

Sure it has had an impact on Apple. Almost every customer who gets Android could've been someone who bought Apple. At this stage Google is Apple's only competitor for good or bad. As far as Steve is concerned, that 268 million HTC just made amounts to about a half billion loss for Apple since their profit margins are higher.

I agree with you though, it's not slowing them down sufficiently. That being said I wish Apple would stay around and be successful. It's an option that exists for us out there. I don't ever see myself buying an Apple product but the fact these are on the market brings prices down of other products.

I just hope Microsoft and Nokia put it together so that they can again compete in the smartphone area.

Totally agree. Apple obviously realizes the threat HTC poses, hence the preemptive strike they made with the ITC. With the strong sales of Motorola's Droid lineup that makes two major competitors on the hardware front.

Apple, revolutionary? They sure have some REVOLUTIONARY hardware alright! Go buy an Apple desktop, and when your video card starts to age, have fun replacing it, because its soldered to the motherboard, that's how revolutionary their products are! They like to make mediocre products with a 'revolutionary' design so fanboys drool over them without looking too hard into the actual specs. It's all about the brand. You pay an extra couple hundred for the name and logo. As for their phones, there's nothing revolutionary about them, smartphones have been around for years, they just created one with a single button and a touch screen and people bought it because it was a new take on something that we have already had.

Yeah, I have the same problem with my Xbox360. I'm guessing that most people have a console of some kind, though.

Great argument besides the fact that the Xbox is designed specifically FOR gaming, and gaming alone. It's not a personal computer. My pc is modifiable, and not very limited in what I can do with it, hence expansion slots on the motherboard. Macs aren't whatsoever. They sell cheap pieces of hardware in a glossy white package with so much markup that it makes it laughable to even own one. I priced out a computer that has about HALF the power of my system on the Apple site for $2,500, mine cost $1,300. Steve Jobs is laughing all the way to the bank. You pay over $1k for the OS and brand name.

Plenty of people seem to think it's worth that. A PC is there to be modifiable, an Xbox for gaming and an Apple for style? ease of use? What ever. A lot of people seem to want one.

Sheep tend to follow the herd though, and Steve Jobs is a pretty good sheep dog!

Nah, Steve Jobs is the shepherd while the media are the sheep dogs telling people how awesome Apple products are while downplaying the rest of the competition. A couple of weeks ago Jim Cramer gushed about Apple's products which left a bad taste in my mouth.

You mean like you following the herd of apple haters?

Apple haters AND Apple lovers; get a fucking life.

Should I wait?

I was going to buy an HTC desire (UK) this week but considering they are going to be releasing new phones in Q3 do you guys think it will be worth the wait?

I believe that Android 3.0 is being release around Q3 and from what I've read the specs will be quite a bit higher, but then again so will the price =/

The Desire is fantastic. It will get a 2.2 update later in the year, but it does everything I want now so I wouldnt be worried about waiting.

If you did wait, there will always be the next phone in the next quarter.

Just do it!
