Lara Croft is named by Guinness as the "Most Successful Human Videogame Heroine."
Guinness to track video game world records

Guinness World Records already compiles many of the world’s most bizarre and amazing feats from mankind, but oddly enough, gaming achievements are currently a little lacking from the latest book of world records. That will soon change, however, as Guinness World Records will announce at the London Book Fair that it is working on a book dedicated to video game records.

"We reintroduced videogaming world records to our annual book a few years ago, and it’s proved to be one of the most popular sections with our core readers. It makes sense, therefore, to dedicate an entire annual to the subject," said Guinness World Records editor in chief Craig Glenday.

The book will include reviews of the 20 biggest games of the year, plus record game scores, hardware profiles, sales figures, technical achievements and professional gamer salaries, according to GamesIndustry.biz.

"Our record researchers are already scouring the videogaming community for superlatives, and the vast number of games, gamers, developers and platforms mean that we have an incredible pool of content to dip into each year. It's going to be a very exciting project," added Glenday.

Guinness World Records: Videogame Edition 2008 is expected to release in April 2008.

I think the most successful pc game in the last 10 years should be nominated Half Life

Actually I would think the vote would go to World of Warcraft.

However the most susccesful video game franchise may go to the Unreal or Battlefield series, HL2 only had two (HL1/HL2) iterations as well as 6 expansions total (Black Mesa, Episode 1, etc.).

They would have to update the book every year as Wow is still growing. I just joined last night after putting it off because of my addiction to Ultima Online.

you could also put Solid Snake from Metal Gear Solid or Sam Fisher from Splinter Cell you could also put Hitman 47 and the zelda character or Mario from Nintendo not to mention Duke Nukem or Sonic the Hedgehog...

You're confusing "most successful" with your favorite game. I played and greatly enjoyed half-life and have never played WoW, but WoW will probably be the most successful game of all time (if not already) and certainly the most successful in the last 10 years.

If by "most successful" you mean copies sold then I think the Sims franchise would win

Meh - I never understood HL1's mass-appeal. The mods that came afterward, sure, but I found the SP/DM pretty average. HL2 on the other hand impressed me a lot more.

I prefer Angelina Jolie. She definitely has a better physique compared to the model in the picture, something that weighs quite heavily in terms of the type of activity Ms. Croft is (typically) exposed to.

*Shrug* - not sure why the downrating. It's pretty much a question of opinion, and I do prefer Angelina Jolie too.

how many archeologists do you know who carry guns? Two of them? I think by the time they got to designing her other attributes, the picture of an archeologist was long out the window.

If more archaeologists could pull off the tight clothes like her, it would been a credit to their feild. I would certantly be more interested to study in that feild. But then, what exactly would I be focusing my studies on... Much the same reason I took that useless marketing course.

The new Lara Croft has a nice... Belt!

I had a fun time explaining why there was a huge picture of Lara Croft on my screen instead of AutoCAD. :P

By True Strike on 4/20/2007 12:58:27 PM , Rating: 2
Heh, as soon as this pic came up I had to scale the window down you she didn't fill the screen. I don't know if my manager would have liked seeing that on my screen...not sure if I could explain how that could be work related...

And yes...a very nice "belt", indeed.

why isn't the picture of jolie?
By ForumMaster on 4/13/2007 4:48:13 AM , Rating: 2
while it is true that in the last tomb raider game, angelina jolie wasn't lara croft, but she is the popular one.

Galaga Champion

Darn I would have been the worlds highest scoring Galaga champion.

I dont recall my final score but if you didnt even break a million you werent even close.

George Castanza for Frogger anyone?

Blizzard

has already made into GBofWW. It was their Battlenet realm servers with somthing like 500,000 peeps playing all at one time.

That was the 1996 edition I think. I'm sure their wow realms have broken some records by now.

More of the classic arcade
By tygrus on 4/16/2007 6:05:24 PM , Rating: 2
You have to look at the sales/player numbers in context. 20 years ago there were less computers, less gamers, less sales. Then look at the affect on people and the industry by the early arcade games and their progress into the home. There has also been movies that were based on or featured video games.
There is a large parallel social history that could be explored.

You do realize the category is "Most Successful Human Videogame Heroine."

Gordon Freeman, Master Chief, and Link are all guys.

Zelda hasn't had her own game.

The Metroid series is MUCH better than the Tomb Raider series. Metroid Prime is awesome. Even so, more people have heard of the Tomb Raider series and Lara Croft because of the movies, so I'm not surprised by their selection.

RE: WHAT ? !!
By Zurtex on 4/13/2007 5:30:54 AM , Rating: 2
I do think more Metroid games have sold than Tomb Raider games though. Certainly seem to remember Metroid being above Tomb Raider in the top selling game franchises. So yeah, I'm always miffed with this (seen this exact record been given about before by other stuff) unless they state that Samus isn't human.

RE: WHAT ? !!
By Aikouka on 4/13/2007 12:32:54 PM , Rating: 3
I look at it like this... if I went around and asked people if they knew who Samus Aran or Lara Croft were... who would people know? Survey says... Lara Croft. The Metroid games are definitely very good (in my opinion, the earlier ones... not a fan of Prime), but Lara is just more well-known. I don't think most people really know that Samus is a girl unless you die in Super Metroid and see the silhouette of a girl when you blow up (I think that was the scene? Correct me if I'm wrong, please)

RE: WHAT ? !!
By JDHack42 on 4/13/2007 6:34:29 PM , Rating: 2
You find out Samus is a girl if you beat Metroid in under 4 hours, and there's no mistaking it if your time is under 2 hours.

This points to the whole issue of demographics. If Guiness relies on the younger generations to determine popularity, we'll miss many of the games that have come and gone.
