Trail of crumbs leading up to launch of Android 2.3

The newest update to Google's Android mobile operating system, 2.3 "Gingerbread", could show off its sweetness any day now.

Friday afternoon, GoogleMobile posted a Tweet on its Twitter stream that read "Our cafe's are baking something sweet". It was accompanied by a Twitpic of a pile of Android gingerbread men. PCMag also has video of a large gingerbread man being erected in front of Google's Mountainview, Calif. offices.

The post has lit up the blog world with speculation about the forthcoming OS update (often mixed up with 3.0 "Honeycomb"), which has been bolstered by rumors of the Samsung Nexus S, a follow-up to Google's Nexus One.

TalkAndroid is reporting that the update could come to Nexus One users some time this week, and others are speculating that it will be announced later today at the Web 2.0 Summit in San Francisco (Google's Nikesh Arora is one of the event's panelists).

With recent reports of app and Android Market trouble, here's hoping that the newest update isn't a half-baked attempt.
