Google is definitely much more than just a search engine

The latest version of Google Pack, which integrates several popular third party utilities, seems to have left a big omission this time around: Trillian, multi-client instant messenger. Trillian has been growing quite steadily since its creation, and remains one of the most popular instant messaging clients available. Thanks to its customizability and usability. Google originally thought it would be a good idea to include Trillian in its Google Pack. Some questions are being raised as to why Google has dropped Trillian, and while no definitive answer has been given by the search giant yet, it's not difficult to see why.

Google currently has its own instant messaging client, called Google Talk. While Google Talk isn't quite popular yet, it integrates well with Google's GMail free email service, which is no longer in beta and no longer invite-only. So is Google Talk enough reason for Google to drop Trillian? Not entirely. Both Google Talk and Trillian have been included in Google Pack for a while, but only now has Google changed this.

Earlier this month, DailyTech reported that Google had entered a partnership with cell phone giant Nokia, to develop a hand-held Google device. The device would be a palm-top, able to browse the web, connect to various Google services like GMail and also be able to communicate via Google Talk. The device would not use cellular networks, but rather Wi-Fi networks.

So here we have a formula: Google, Google online service, Google Talk and now a hand-held Google Device with Google Talk as the primary mode of communication. Google is hoping to promote Google Talk as the definitive communications tool. The company insists that search is still its primary market focus, but communications is a big next step for Google. Google Calendar, GMail, Picasa and Talk, are essentially all modes of communication. Whether it’s done using images or by text, communications using Google services is clearly important for the company.

While the change in Google Pack is subtle, the launch of other Google communication-oriented services are not. Once upon a time, a company named Yahoo used Google as its search technology. We all know how this turned out.

Hrmm, Google Talk is largely Jabber which is in Trillian. Hrmm, gaim supports google talk and voice features are currently being added. Oh wait, lets go to the source:

http://www.google.com/talk/developer.html

"...We believe users should have choice in which clients they use to connect to the Google Talk service and we want to encourage the developer community to create new and innovative applications that leverage our service. To enable this, Google Talk uses the standard XMPP protocol for authentication, presence, and messaging. ..."

"... Google Talk uses extensions to XMPP for voice signaling and peer-to-peer communication. Source code and documentation for these extensions is now available. ..."

Your speculation has 0 merit and a search would have told you that in about 10 seconds. Oh well, anything goes on the internet, eh?

But the free version of Trillian doesn't support Jabber. Maybe that's why Google dropped it, because it wouldn't support their IM service. Unlikely I know, but it's still a possibility.

This should read "...but only now has Google changed this." or "...bur until now Google hasn't changed this.". The sentence just doesn't quite make sense as it is.

I can certainly do a good job of making myself look stupid.

Correction: "...but until now Google hadn't changed this."

Maybe they will add gaim when it hits the 2.0 release (I believe I read a while back that one of the top developers for gaim is working on googletalk as his main job), or maybe they are just hoping to gain market share with talk.

As an aside did you recently change something with the sight as it worked fine in firefox two days ago and now I cant post (it says I have to login even though it says I am logged in and it wont let me log out to log back in). I had these problem months ago, and then it went away for months, now its back (no changes to firefox from when it was working to now so I am guessing it is on your end).

I didn't know that Google has announced a mobile device, but I think it was a predictable move that they would drop Trillian from Google Pack.
Why should they support an application which they compete with?

Hmm, could it be because it is a virtual back door? Incorporating the weaknesses of three IM systems into one so it is just that much easier to hack into my system? I don’t know about the rest of you, but I have seen it used as a portal into my friends systems more then enough.

Is it the end of the world? I thought Google only released beta products.
Edit - Oh wait, just read the other posts. GMail is still in beta.

Who cares?

This is what constitutes as news nowadays? I'm sorry, but Google doing something relatively trivial isn't really cause for concern, especially if its Trillian or something you can download yourself independently. Jeez, if the media has enough time to notice this, maybe it should focus on more interesting Tech News topics like the progress of ATI's R600 or nVidia's G80, psht, Google drops Trillian, what a joke.
