Google is definitely much more than just a search engine
The latest version of Google Pack, which integrates several
popular third party utilities, seems to have left a big omission this time
around: Trillian, multi-client instant messenger. Trillian has been growing
quite steadily since its creation, and remains one of the most popular instant
messaging clients available. Thanks to its customizability and usability.
Google originally thought it would be a good idea to include Trillian in its
Google Pack. Some questions are being raised as to why Google has dropped
Trillian, and while no definitive answer has been given by the search giant
yet, it's not difficult to see why.
Google currently has its own instant messaging client, called Google Talk.
While Google Talk isn't quite popular yet, it integrates well with Google's
GMail free email service, which is no longer in beta and no longer invite-only.
So is Google Talk enough reason for Google to drop Trillian? Not entirely. Both
Google Talk and Trillian have been included in Google Pack for a while, but
only now has Google changed this.
Earlier this month, DailyTech reported that Google had entered a
partnership with cell phone giant Nokia, to develop a hand-held Google
device. The device would be a palm-top, able to browse the web, connect to
various Google services like GMail and also be able to communicate via Google
Talk. The device would not use cellular networks, but rather Wi-Fi networks.
So here we have a formula: Google, Google online service, Google Talk and now a
hand-held Google Device with Google Talk as the primary mode of communication.
Google is hoping to promote Google Talk as the definitive communications tool.
The company insists that search is still its primary market focus, but
communications is a big next step for Google. Google Calendar, GMail, Picasa
and Talk, are essentially all modes of communication. Whether it’s done using
images or by text, communications using Google services is clearly important
for the company.
While the change in Google Pack is subtle, the launch of other Google
communication-oriented services are not. Once upon a time, a company named
Yahoo used Google as its search technology. We all know how this turned out.
