New app lets users check email with Outlook or Gmail

Google is looking to best Microsoft on many levels. Google already rules the search market leaving Microsoft scrambling to find ways to compete. However, on other fronts, it is Google scrambling to compete with Microsoft.

One of the fronts that Google finds it hard to compete against Microsoft on is in office productivity. By far the most popular productivity suite is Microsoft Office. Google offers a full spectrum of online offerings that are free or cost much less than Microsoft's software, but the search giant is still struggling to get users to make the change from Microsoft software to its online only applications.

This year Google has been working to remove some of the barriers that are preventing many enterprise users from using Google applications like Gmail. In January, Google announced offline Gmail -- the lack of offline availability was one of the major reasons many users cited for not using Gmail instead of Outlook from Microsoft.

Google has announced this week that it has removed another barrier that prevents some users from taking advantage of Google emails service. Some users like the Gmail interface, others want to use Outlook to get email.

Google has announced a new feature called Google Apps Sync for Microsoft Outlook that lets users continue using Outlook to manage their email and other functions like calendars and still take advantage of Google's cloud-based email service.

The application lets Outlook users connect to Google Apps for business email, contacts, and calendar on their computers and when away from the office the same data can be accessed via the Google web interface.

Key features of the new offering include email, calendar, and contacts synchronization. The plug-in uses the Gmail offline protocol, which Google says is much faster than other methods like IMAP. A data migration tool is also built in that allows users to migrate their data form Exchange or Outlook into Google Apps with two clicks. Users can also schedule meetings with coworkers using Outlook Calendar or Google Calendar.

You're right, but the feature difference between Office and Google Docs is so significant that it deserves a mention. I would say that for a normal business, Google Docs doesn't even register as an option. The only place I'd use it would be for home use, and even then it won't do much of what I need.

Agreed. On the surface the free side is appealing to me (I am a net admin for about 100 users). However one problem to any cloud solution, that most fail to account for is bandwidth. Internal bandwidth is never a problem as we are all on gigabit. However with an increasing number of remote sites/users hitting us via VPN, along with normal internet/email access, make it less attractive to me at least.

I would need a sizable increase in bandwidth to accommodate moving all MS Office functions to the cloud. Once the Office license is purchased that PC is good for the life of the machine, the cost of that bandwidth never goes away. We use a 3 year lifespan for computers and the added bandwidth cost over 3 years for just my 100 employees would make it a break even prospect. For the ROI involved it just is not worth it when you consider training and such as well.

Not to mention, do you really want a corporate-wide productivity hit like you'd have if your Internet connection stopped working for whatever reason? It's bad enough to lose browsing and e-mail, but to also lose your office apps and access to all your business documents as well would be pretty bad.

The difference between Google Docs and Microsoft Office is even greater than the difference between OpenOffice and Microsoft Office. Really there is just no comparing the two. Most companies would have a difficult time just moving to OpenOffice which has most of the same features and usability as Microsoft Office. When you switch that down to a severely limited app like Google Docs, prepare for user craze.

You could just use Zoho. You can login using your Gmail account and even use it offline.

Free? A Google Apps account costs $50 per head. SBS would be cheaper for most I guess.

Application vs Security

Interface vs Security vs Compliance vs Integration vs Budget the list goes on.

General Users - Sure

Very Small Business that don't want to buy Microsoft Small Business server or cant afford to hire an admin even part time - Maybe G-Mail but I might just recommend pop3/imap accounts on your domain hosting provider.

Actual Small Business with a few dollars - Microsoft Small Business Server. Probably one of the most overlooked and complete products on the market today.

Compliance or Security - Any company that remotely concerned over security or compliance - Exchange\Lotus Notes-Domino

Integration if your company is anywhere past the year 2007 then your leveraging sharepoint now and definitely blackberry servers so its not just e-mail.

Budget - plays a role but if you can muster up the money get Microsoft small business server you really get a lot for the money.

G-Mail is pretty with a few neat tricks please don't confuse a few gui items as being battle tested and ready for the enterprise. Do you trust your company sensitive information on something outside the office? But then in some companies management can make some poor decisions.

LOL. There are a number of bad or funny labels for the messaging field or any IT field. I too have to laugh at the words people will throw in.

My Favorite is when electronic is thrown into the name when someone is applying for an e-mail position or when agencies use the term.

EX:
Electronic Messaging

Being in the computer field Im glad you clarified that you specialize in the electronic type. You don't know how many people we get who use Voodoo instead of electronic.

Not for Google Apps Standard

I realise they're trying to win Exchange users here, but I still think it's a shame that they're not allowing this app to work with their free "Standard" edition of Google Apps.

That would be brilliant. Google powered Poor Mans Exchange.

This article got me massively excited because this is the exact feature I've been wanting from Google. Then I spent an hour trying to find out how to set it up only to find you need GA Premiere. This makes me very sad and disappointed.

The point of this is to replace Microsoft Exchange Server with Google Apps. It looks interesting.
