Google refreshes Glass hardware, but will only be available to customers that place new orders

The Google I/O conference kicks off later today, but that doesn’t mean that Google has to save all of its announcement for the show. With that in mind, the company has announced that Google Glass is getting a slight hardware/software upgrade.

After performing a few tweaks in the past year to increase battery life by 20 percent and voice searches by 10 percent, Google will now start shipping Glass with 2GB of RAM (up from 1GB) to further improve performance.

In a statement to The Verge, Glass product manage Steve Lee said that the move to 2GB of RAM “Will allow for more Glassware [apps] to run in parallel and for each Glassware to start more quickly. You'll notice the device generally feels a bit faster and more reliable."

Other enhancements include a viewfinder that allows you to frame a shot before capturing it. The option is brought up by simply saying “ok glass, show viewfinder.”

There are also two new Google Now cards available on Glass. One will alert you when you have a package inbound, while the second will let you know where you parked your car, if you’re the forgetful type.

For those with older versions of Glass, Google won’t be swapping out your equipment this time around as it did back in the fall. The upgraded version of Glass will only ship to customers placing new orders.

Don't be evil!

Don't be evil! supposedly, used to be google's motto. All I can see through these pair of glasses is that google is trying to create an army of zombies around warehouses and anybody who does a job to carry something from point A to point B. In google's adverts they deliberately have this good looking girl or boy wearing these glasses but in reality I have the feeling that it will be people that already fed up with their life and their life will be G+'ed in direction of being proper zombies. Can they do something about that? I guess they can. Will they do anything? I doubt it.

Don't buy it then!

What is this zombies business?

"google is trying to create an army of zombies"

Seriously? Have you seen anything on what Glass can do and it's potential for future products? It's an unreleased product. If you don't want it , don't buy it, but really, your comment is just a few steps beyond ridiculous.

pfff...
first of all it is not an unrealeshed product
and secondly, what does this thing offer you?
Browse the internet with a mobile device that is attached to you head?
Hah.... like you cannot do that already.

stalk people and record silently videos, that's a proper use...

It is useless unless, you are a freak, and by freak I mean stupid that buys anything that the market commands.

the only use that I find on that thing is to concentrate on someone, touch your google glass thing and yell at him "It's Over 9000"
other than that, rubish.

(the concept has been implemented 4-5 years ago, but since it's useless it never went popular. now google and/or apple make it, so it's "usefull")

"first of all it is not an unrealeshed product"

It's an open beta, not a released product. It says right on its start page "Join our open beta and help shape the future of Glass" http://www.google.com/glass/start/

" what does this thing offer you?"

Where to start. HUD navigation while driving, FOV camera, and unlimited potential. Years from now when many things we look through are augmented with a Glass style HUD, from your car windshield to motorcycle helmet to even in your kitchen when you are following a recipe, working on your car, fixing a computer (really almost anything that needs training) through Glass or a Glass like product, you remember what you said here and how opposite reality it was... Even medical applications will use this tech. http://www.theverge.com/2013/8/28/4668822/osu-knee...

you can also stand behind someone at a ATM and record their PIN number.

OK, but to be fair if they are not blocking it and are allowing you to see it with Glass, then you could have seen it with your eyes just as well.

Sure I can rig something to hold the phone in front of my eyes, but that would look a lot stupider than Glass. Just IMO, you can do it if you like it.

I wouldn't say he got a free pass. 5 posters here so far and 3 of us shut him down... But that was mostly because of the ridiculous comment. "Zombies". LOL.

I'd say just think before you talk. it seems some people here have no idea what's going outside of their computer screen.
Check here http://mashable.com/2014/05/07/business-google-gla...
from my understanding it is just "do the job and don't think!"

Yes because before Glass came along, filling orders in a warehouse was one of the most intellectually demanding occupations out there.

#1, that is a single case use, not the designed prupose for Glass.

#2, what reclaimer said.

Either way, it's hardly "zombies" it's a single use among many. Here is another higher intelligence usage. http://www.theverge.com/2013/8/28/4668822/osu-knee...

I hadn't posted yet because I wasn't home from work yet, not because what he said wasn't stupid. Yes, some of us actually have jobs where we are expected to work, not troll the internet.

It was stupid crap, I don't get the zombie comment either. I just hadn't seen it yet when you posted. Why the hell was job in quotes? You think I have nothing better to do than sit here all day picking on you? Grow some balls, man, instead of crying about it.

Where were you when I was defending Google's initiative to get more girls interested in coding, or when I said the satellite imaging company purchase was a smart move on their part? I do defend Google when they do something worth defending. I also criticize Microsoft when they do something stupid. I know that is a hard concept for an apologist to wrap his head around.

Not sure you realize it, but the majority of your posts are to me, yes. And they aren't even conversation posts, but just more "whaaaaa Wecwaimer is picking on Microsowft whaaaa" cry baby sh*t.

So no I'm NOT sure you have something better to do. You act butthurt every DAY towards me. And you think I should grow balls?

And I love that you call me an apologists, you when admitted your posts here are only a function of Microsoft's stock price and you're invested in the company. Making you biased and your "opinions" worthless.

My evaluation of Google or Microsoft or whoever, is not influenced by my personal gain or loss. Now maybe that doesn't prove I'm impartial totally, but it sure as hell means I'm more honest than YOU.

"admitted your posts here are only a function of Microsoft's stock price and you're invested in the company"

This actually makes sense now... Most of his posts do seem to be more based out of "wishful thinking" than they are logic or reality.

I get that. I wish MS pulls their collective heads out of their asses too.

Yeah lol. The guy who said this, word for word, is calling ME an apologist:

" I don't see Microsoft as "family", I see them as a large part of my investment portfolio. When they take actions that have the potential to drive share price down, I am critical."

Irony overload!

I don't know why these apologists are surprised when they are "attacked". Even most fanboys would think that their mindless defense of everything Google does, no matter how awful or anti-user, is a little crazy.

So which of these guys do you think they are?

Don't buy the product. I rail against Google turning "customers" into products and the dangers of giving Google every little detail about your life. But this is a $1,500 pair of glasses that no one is buying.

I don't even know what the hell you are talking about with the zombie junk.

The tech is cool. I would probably buy it just to see what it was all about... if it wasn't $1,500 and didn't phone home with every single thing I said, call I made, text I sent, thing I looked at, question I asked, or place I went. Honestly, I could live with the intrusion into my privacy but I won't pay $1,500 to become a product for Google to sell.

"But this is a $1,500 pair of glasses that no one is buying."

It's still in beta phase. It's so desirable that Google is charging $1500 just to to be part of the open beta and people are joining it.

When its refined and released at a non-ludicrous price (most insiders are saying from $299 to $449) it will be a very different story.

By atechfan on 6/25/2014 6:18:51 PM , Rating: 2
It's like $80 or so worth of hardware. Tack on a couple hundred to pay for the services and allow some profit, and it still should come in under three hundred.

For something so obnoxious and expensive you'd hope that it would at least work well.

Nope. Basic operation is terrible, gestures are awful, battery sucks, it's laggy (surprise), and you look like an a** to boot. Maybe it'll be good in a decade when its in something discreet like a contact lens and a company that isn't Google gets a swing at it.

You could say the same thing about MS and Apple. MS, often buggy as hell and Apple, usually works well but is horribly lacking in features and functionality.

Glass actually is an open beta. Not an officially released product and trollboy above is crapping on it as if it is like he chimes in on every Google article. Clearly he has an angry little hard on for Google.

Yup. That and the "free" price gives their defenders all the excuses they need for their half finished products
