Google is mum on details of the service
The music industry is most popular today in the digital world with download services like iTunes and streaming offerings like Rhapsody. The world of physical music purchases with CDs and singles is still there, but nowhere near as robust as it once was.
Google is into just about everything today and with its Android OS, it now has one of the most popular and best selling smartphone OS's in the world. Talk of a Google Music service has been around for a long time and it appears that the Google Music service might be closer now than ever.
PCMag reports that Motorola's mobility chief Sanjay Jha has noted that the Xoom tablet that is set to land soon will have Google music and video services. The Guardian quotes Jha saying, "If you look at Google Mobile services [via Android] today, there's a video service, there's a music service – that is, there will be a music service."
PCMag also reports that Billboard noted in September that Google was shopping around a proposal for Google Music with major record labels. Billboard has more recently offered details on what Google execs are working on the project. Google's Andy Rubin is pitching the service to record labels and there are two groups working on the project with one group working on actually getting the service running and building the store and the other tasked with getting label and publisher deals for content. When we might see the service go live is still an unknown, but it seems that the service cold be tied to the Xoom launch and Honeycomb.
