The Xbox 360 Core system is dominating the competition so far
Amazon.com gives customers a vote on four tasty deals

If $300 is too much to spend on an Xbox 360 Core system, then $400 for an Xbox 360 Platinum is surely out of the question. Well, how would you feel if you could get an Xbox Core system for a mere $100 instead? Of course, there is a catch involved but it could be quite the deal if the votes are there.

The folks over at Joystiq.com noticed that Amazon.com will be running a promotion for the next four weeks in which customers can vote on four deals that they'd like Amazon to provide. The choices this week include:

  • 1,000 Xbox 360 Core Systems for $100 each
  • 2,500 Mongoose dual-suspension bikes for $30 each
  • 2,000 Barbie in The 12 Dancing Princesses Interactive Genevieve Dolls for $10 each
  • One-year of Amazon Prime plus a $100 promotional certificate to Amazon's Toy Department for $40

Customers can begin voting for this week’s items right now and voting ends on Tuesday, November 21. The winning item will be announced on November 22 and will go on sale at 2PM EST on Thanksgiving Day.

If the XBOX 360 wins, those'll be gone in a minute or two :o.

I know I'd buy one for a gift, because that's an incredible deal! This means I better setup my one click purchase option ASAP!

Not so fast there buddy:

Whoa. Here I thought the Wii was going to be the most affordable console, bar none. This is an outrageously awesome price point that is immediately more attractive than the Wii... unless you already have a 360, like I do.

Personally, I would STILL buy this, then sell it for a meager profit, while still keeping the price lower than regular retail. Help buy other games, console, or even food.

Wow, indeed.

Remember this will be 1,000 consoles only, that is a drop in the well compared to the 4.5 million of 360 sales so far.

I wasn't even interested in a 360, but damn, for $100 bucks I'll take two! then i'd add a hd-dvd drive. mmm..hd....

Seriously, I didn't want to get one cause of the price. But for $100, I'll pick one up. I'll also tell my roommates I paid full retail to get them to chip in $100 each, and I will make money in the process!

Why are we left out?

Why does Microsoft have to enforce such strict warranty rules? Strictly because of the fact that the systems are on the American version of Amazon means that I can't order a system to ship to Canada. For $100--even USD--I'd buy an Xbox 360 right quick, but alas, I cannot :(

you have to live near the US border like me, hehehe
that's where I got all my cheap computer goodies. I'm such a bastard, I know

DUDE!

Amazon might have impressive servers, but there is no way their provider will live through this.

I was thinking the same thing. If the Xbox ends up being the deal I can see Amazon coming to a grinding halt. The mass of requests could literally kill their servers and force a systemwide reboot. Maybe they are doing this as some kind of stress test?

Huh, thats a pretty good point. You can't pay for that kind of stress test. Considering they are selling what, 1000? Its not like they are losing a substantial ammount of money, and they basically get to test out their system agianst a syn flood or ddos attack (I can't remember the names for attacks).

I'm sure the x-box 360 would be the winner here, but can you imagine the tens of thousands or hundreds of thousands of people trying to get one online. Can the website handle that much traffic all at one instance. I would like to know how the computer determines who has the first shot at it. I mean we are talking milliseconds here.

By CascadingDarkness on 11/16/2006 4:53:52 PM , Rating: 2
We are talking page can't be diplayed because servers can respond to everyone in time.

My home town is home of worlds largest trivia contest. Ten seconds after question is asked the first 3 sites google pull up crash due to so much volume of people looking for answers.

I know Amazon is designed for many more people then a typical historial/personal site, but volume will have everyone smashing refresh.

I'd hate to be on their tech support that day =)
