Epic and Microsoft talk of Gears' success

Epics much-hyped Gears of War, which cost an estimated $10 million USD to make, has sold over 1 million copies in its first two weeks of availability. The breakneck selling pace for Gears of War makes it the fastest-selling game yet for Microsoft's year-old Xbox 360 console.

While topping 1 million units sold is quite impressive, it comes nowhere close to matching Halo 2 which sold an impressive 2.5 million copies in just 24 hours. Reuters reports:

Halo 2", however, had the benefit of building on the successful formula of its predecessor, and it also came three years into the life of the original Xbox, meaning there was a bigger pool of potential buyers. By contrast, "Gears of War" is an all-new game and arrived just a year after the Xbox 360 hit the market. Its price tag is 20 percent higher than that of "Halo 2" when it was launched.

And for the Gears of War faithful out there, the inevitable has been confirmed -- there are sequels for the game in the works. "The goal of this ad is to establish Marcus Fenix as the hero of the Gears of War trilogy," said Jeff Bell, Microsoft's Corporate Vice President of Global Marketing for the Interactive Entertainment Business unit. Epic's Mark Rein was even more blunt when it comes to sequels:

Gears is a trilogy? If we can keep making quality games that fans obviously then why would we have to stop at three? I don't see the Metal Gear Solid, Mario, Grand Theft Auto or Final Fantasy series (among others) stopping at three and they're still delivering compelling entertainment content that's easily worth the money (see Unreal Tournament as well). There's definitely, as many of you have pointed out, a lot more to learn about what's really happening on the plant Sera and in the lives of the members of Delta Squad.

Microsoft and Epic have a hit on their hands with Gears of War and they are going to do everything in their power to keep the fire burning. Gears of War has already become the most-played game on Xbox Live with 850,000 unique users battling it out in over 10 million gameplay sessions.

Any idea if this game has or will have a PC version?

Its an exclusive to the 360 but I'm sure when Gears2 comes out, MS will release Gears1 to the pc crowd as crumbs for the poor.

Who said that? Not that anyone will care about GoW anymore, by the time it may or may not come to the PC (following your theory).

I am looking at a picture in the Holiday 2006 edition of PC Gamer that shows a Games for Windows kiosk which is very similar to console kiosks you see in stores now. Apparently these kiosks will be a big roll out with Vista when it releases in January.

Anyhow, the thing I noticed is that the kiosk has Gears of War in it with the "Games for Windows" logo on the box. It is accompanied by all of the traditional Microsoft games. Of course when i go to the games for windows site I find no mention of Gears of War. http://www.gamesforwindows.com/

MS claims that image was an 'artist’s conception' of what a Games for Windows kiosk might look like, and that the Gears of War cover was ‘accidentally’ used by the artist.

That image was ‘supposed’ to be removed from circulation, but was ‘accidentally’ given to PC Gamer when it was bundled with other art.

The retraction was made in a blog here: http://gamerscoreblog.com/team/archive/2006/11/21/...

Of course, they make no claim that Gears of War will never be a PC title, just that the picture was an 'accident'.

Actually, this is exactly what happened to the original Halo title for the first Xbox - it came out for the PC right before Halo 2 was being released for the Xbox. And apparently it sold incredibly well.

It would appear his theory has a helluva lot of merit.

Halo 2 is coming to PC also, but with no release date yet. Maybe it will be released around the time as Halo 3's launch. Speaking of which, I wouldn't doubt that if Gears does come to PC it too will be a Vista-only title.

We don't need it as Crysis is coming out soon

GoW uses the Unreal engine, and Unreal 2007 will probably come out before GoW gets converted to Windows.

Why is the PC crowd being placed further and further back?
This is a real question, as I don't know.

I feel the same way.

I'm afraid the answer lies with money...

Uh...I don't exactly see everyone switching to Macs in droves.

And with Vista, development between the Xbox 360 and Windows will be closer than ever. So they'll be able to easily port games between systems using XNA.

I don't think DirectX versions factor into that since any PC game I've ever played comes with the DX version it needs. Nor should an LCD screen be factored in, as today they are basically interchangeable with televisions. There's far too much other speculation for me to properly comment on.

with the Gary Jules song from Donnie Darko even made me want to buy this thing and I don't even own an Xbox 360.

Good marketing + good word of mouth + decent gameplay = profit!!

That song wasn't Gary Jules - it was done by Michael Andrews and is a cover of the original Tears for Fears song (written by Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith).
