Gateway One ZX line includes machines for entry level and high-performance use

Gateway has announced a new all-in-one series of computers called the Gateway One ZX Series. The new line of computers has multi-touch screen technology and range from entry-level to high-performance configurations.

The AIO systems look like flat-panel TVs and have glossy black cases. The machines have adjustable stands, integrated speakers and accents of clear acrylic and silver with illuminated feet and an illuminated keyboard. The illuminated sections make for a nice ambient glow according to Gateway and should make seeing the keyboard in dark environments easier to do.

The line includes the Gateway One ZX6810-01 with a 23-inch 1080p resolution screen priced at $1,399.99. The computer will run Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit. The LCD itself has a resolution of 1920 x 1080 with brightness of 300 cd/m2, a response time of 5ms, and a contrast ratio of 1000:1. The machine runs an Intel Core 2 Quad Q8200S at 2.33GHz and has an Intel GM45 Express Chipset.

Graphics are via ATI HD 4670 GPU with 1GB of DDR3 RAM and the machine has 8GB of DDR3 SDRAM. Storage includes a 1TB HDD for data and the machine has a 64GB SSD for the OS and applications. A slot load 8x DVD burner is built-in and the machine has 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi and six USB ports. Other features include a wireless mouse and keyboard, HD webcam, 5.1 surround sound built-in and a set of 5-watt speakers along with a hybrid TV tuner.

The Gateway One ZX4800-02 will retail for $749.99 and sports a 20-inch HD resolution screen with 1600 x 900 screen resolution, 250cd/m2 brightness, 1000:1 contrast ratio, and a 5ms response time. The machine runs a Pentium Dual Core T4300 at 2.1GHz. Other features include the Intel GL40 Express Chipset, and graphics via Intel GMA X4500HD integrated GPU. The machine has 4GB of RAM and storage is to a 750GB HDD. A slot loading DVD burner is built-in along with a memory card reader and HD webcam.

Both the ZX4800-02 and the ZX6800 series will ship at the end of October or the beginning of November with the high-performance ZX-6810-01 shipping later in Q4.

$1400 really isn't that bad for what you're getting in that machine and the nice form factor.

As evidenced with Gateway's gamer laptops I'm not surprised that these machines are reasonably priced. For what you're getting the Gateway is cheaper than a similarly configured iMac.

Apple fanboys can piss off because I enjoy using my 13" Macbook but Apple's desktop line and higher end laptops cost more than they are worth.

- Quad core
- 8Gb of DDR3
- 1Tb of hard disk
- 64Gb SSD
- ATI 4870 1Gb
- 23" 1920x1080 with multi-touch
- TV Tuner

all of this in a nice form factor. Very good deal indeed.

very nice price indeed, devil is in the details on the SSD.

But for once an all-in one machine does not seem to suck.

Unfortunately 4670 Graphics not 4870

heat dissipation.

4770 is similar to the 4850 anyhow.

+1 to SSD's

SSD's going mainstream ftw, everyone should enjoy how snappy they are in everyday use.

Yes, but WHICH SSD is it getting? If it's not an Indilix or Intel, it won't be good for intense randoms.

Tell that to Lenovo who puts Samsung SSDs in their laptops.

Yeah, the OEMs are more worried about price than they are about speed. Most consumers won't know the difference.

Don't be so sure. The masses are much dumber than you think.

All-in-one PCs being launched without crap hardware, and for reasonable prices. This stomps all over Apples offering in this form factor. I never understood putting laptop chips in a desktop. Electricity isn't THAT expensive yet.

Not always about electricity. With these chips you can have slimmer machines since it won't produce much heat which also means a quieter machine because you don't need a lot of cooling fans.

There are some desktop graphics chips that run plenty cool and allow this form factor. Obviously, since Gateway just chose one. Besides, there is no guarantee that the laptop chip is gonna run cool either, if it happens to be nVidia.

Nvidia 9400M is just fine in PC laptops. Excess heat is due to poor design by Apple.

Solid hardware with a nice form and a nice price.
Apple should take a cue, their desktop line is ridiculous...

Honestly, if I could sell my own product line for 2 or 3x my current pricing I certainly would.

Do you like my pocket watch? Look closely as it swings back and forth on its chain like a pendulum. You're getting stupid... very stupid.

Quite nice

Pretty nice price for the hardware you get in an all in one unit. I would think that one reason most all in one makers use laptop chips would to keep down temperatures. However I would also prefer a disktop chip. I wonder if the graphics card in the upper level machine is upgradable.

The only problem is I still dont trust the reliability of
gateway after having a really bad experience with one of their laptops.

Back in August 1995 I started as a tech on the phone for them two weeks before Windows 95 came out. I'll never forget the nightmares and will never buy a Gateway as long as I live.

I'm guessing you haven't seen Gateway's laptop offerings... gaming laptops that don't cost much and have decent battery life.

Not bad
By PAPutzback on 10/7/2009 12:07:04 PM , Rating: 2
Decent hardware, lots of ram, cheap enough. Defintely a good pc for the kids and wife who don't do any heavy gaming.

I wonder if the base has enough weight and grip to not slide or tip when using the touch interface.

Also is there an easy way to bring up an onscreen keyboard? Then you could do away with the mouse and keyboard and make it a nice kitchen counter pc or build it into a wall.

I'd like to se a BD drive in it but then I guess you can always play the file across the network.

The HP touchsmart has no problem with being pushed back when using the touch screen. One thing I do like about the touchsmart over this one is the widescreen ratio is 16:10, so its resolution is a bit higher at 1920 x 1200.

Quite Nice

Nice little unit.
