Gateway joins Apple and Sony in the latest round of all-in-one PC designs

Although Gateway has been in the news recently regarding the Acer takeover, the company is today hoping to get some exposure from an all new desktop product.

Apple recently released its totally revamped all-in-one iMac and Sony countered with its own pricier VAIO LT series. Gateway is now entering the mix with its new Gateway One.

The Gateway One is built around a 19" (1440x900) LCD which features a prominent "chin" at the base of the display. Surrounding the display are a plethora of inputs/outputs including three USB 2.0 ports, one Firewire port and dual memory card slots. Inside, users will find two HDD based for expansion.

Gateway even includes an innovative power adapter which manages to incorporate four additional USB 2.0 ports, SPDIF, optical and network connections -- this leaves unsightly wires and cables under the desk instead of on it collecting dust.

"Gateway One exemplifies the idea of simplicity, of less is more," said Gateway Senior VP Gary Elsasser. "This computer complements its environment and becomes a design element you want to show off as much as you want to use. Because it doesn't compromise on features or performance, it will be appreciated for its brains as well as its beauty."

The base $1,299 system will get you a Core 2 Duo T5250 processor, 320GB HDD, Intel X3100 integrated GPU, 1.3MP webcam and a slot-load dual-layer DVD burner. $1,499 adds a 400GB HDD and an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 2600 XT GPU. Stepping up to the $1,799 model will get you a Core 2 Duo 7250 processor, 500GB HDD and an analog/digital TV tuner.

The $1,299 model and $1,799 model will be made available exclusively at Best Buy. The $1,499 model will only be available direct from Gateway.

seems expensive

so this is essentially a laptop motherboard inside an LCD case? seems pricey, especially the 200 dollar jump from the base model to the next one up. 200 bucks for better graphics and a slightly bigger HD... but then i guess style has its price, and although i can't see myself buying one of these i do believe that it looks better than the imac with its cheap white plastic. i haven't seen a pic of the sony yet, though.

1. This Gateway has an additional (4) USB ports in the power supply (click through the Gizmodo link)

2. Your laptop has an unusually high number of USB ports - most have 2-3

Yeah, his laptop does have a high amount of USB ports. My Toshiba has 4 (1 left, 1 back, 2 right).

The only laptops I have seen with 6 USB ports are extremely high end ones from Alienware or HP, and even then only the highest of high priced HP's have six.

1 to the portable laptop-attached printer
1 to the mouse (you don't use the touchpad)
1 to the usb drive that hangs all the time in it

Man, I hate it how designers just follow the most popular guy blindly. Apple was stupid to not allow horizontal swivel for the Imacs, and now it looks like Gateway's designer is following suit. In fact, it looks like it can't even swivel vertically.

And what's up with that photo on the desk with ZERO wires? Lame. Designers are too stuck up and live in a dream world -- instead of designing the thing as if there are no wires, if they quit denying it they could design the wires in and make it look nice still. Kinda like the cars where you can tell the designer didn't want to design for the front license plate. They always look hilarious with the plate.

I am a good friend of a product designer so I know what I'm talking about here. :P

After reading Gizmodo's review, it looks like it does have a vertical tilt only. Better than nothing, but still sucks not to have horiz.

The coolest was 2 generations ago's Imac with that awesome neck. That was cool.

Not true - designers are shooting for the ideal world where we have no visible wires around our computers. Neat and tidy. From my vantage point sitting at my desk, I see zero computer wires, which is nice compared to the tangled mess of computers and monitors in the past.

That photo is from the BACK. Apple does it too in their product shots. It's deceptive and lame.

Yes, product designers hate wires. But for now, they're here. Yet when designers design something, they won't show or admit to that "flaw".

Ok so I have never owned an all-in-one computer, but seriously I am confused as to why horizontal swivel matters... why can't you guys just turn the computer at an angle? Besides, being an all-in-one package and designed the way it is, it would be pretty hard to go for slim, elegant and a seemingly useless horizontal swivel. Now you guys apparently have a purpose for horizontal swivel, so please enlighten me (seriously, I am not being sarcastic).

I don't know, the same reason we've had it on CRT monitors for the last 20 years I guess.

Sometimes you want to turn the screen to show someone else nearby something or to watch TV from your couch or whatnot. Lots of reasons. Maybe you just want to sit at your desk from a different angle or you have an L shaped desk and can use either side.

It just lets you adjust the screen to what you feel like easier instead of having to adjust yourself to a static screen.

If you assume you have room on your desk around the base, sure. And you don't care about the table surface getting scuffed. And don't tell me this thing weighs nothing. My 24" CRT with no computer components is fairly difficult to turn or move the base. It's got soft feet so as to not scratch the desk, but this makes it much harder to turn and slide.

You just like doing things the hard way I guess.

Wireless PC? battery dieing? This is not a laptop so you have to plug it in. Even if you are talking the keyboard is wireless the battery issue is very small. I have a wirelees Keyboard at work it last 9 months on the same battery.

Yup, the PC isn't a laptop, but it's attempting to reduce the wires (reminds me of that Apple vs Dell image).

My issue is with wireless peripherals. Response time is not on par with wired ones and there's the battery issue. I'm somewhat surprised that batteries have lasted you 9 months. Not sure how and with what frequency you use it. Then again, I may have simply strayed from wireless technology for too long.

Probably true - wireless devices are not slow, nor do they typically chew batteries very quickly (except maybe for some of the poorly-designed Logitech BT sets). I've got a couple of MX3100 sets here that I use a lot. The MX1000 mouse is superb, and the keyboard is pretty good too. I change the batteries maybe twice per year.

Yeah I have a Microsoft wireless keyboard at work I paid $25 for (it was on sale at Staples from $90) and its still using the Energizer batteries it came with. Bought it about 8 months ago. And I write code so I'm typing all day, every day pretty much.

I think its a matter of opinion and personal taste, well, I think it looks quite good.
Then again I would NEVER buy a computer (No matter what company) for looks or 'novelty'. What matters to me is what you are going to see when you are on the computer. Namely the image on the monitor, and the performance that the hardware inside your computer is bringing you.

Well yes, but an iMac can be a Mac and a PC.

The One doesn't look too bad, but I think I prefer the slender metallic visage of the current iMac better. And in this case the iMac seems a better value.

I think what this kind of PCs miss most is touch.

I mean, a touch-sensitive screen, especially if it supports multi-touch. It could make them revolutionary instead of just another "one" :/

I prefer a notebook, docking station, bluetooth keyboard/mouse and a 22" wide screen LCD. - It costs less and you can take the notebook with you.

Is how much heat that LCD screen will be able to handle when the heat is no longer just coming from the monitor components. I can just imagine it malfunctioning due the heat that goes on during summer where I live. My cheap modem does that, so I'd assume it'd do that, because nowadays things are made hella cheap. No I didn't say they cost hella cheap, they're made cheap.

I think this is great for Gateway; it's about time they get back in the game and start putting some interesting stuff out on the market again. Gateway used to be where Dell is now, but have slowly faded into the distance until recently.

I just recently decided that Dell now sucks at least as bad as Gateway used to, so I threw caution to the wind and picked up a new Gateway notebook a couple of weeks ago to replace my old Dell Latitude. I have to say, this is just about the most solidly built notebook I've ever had. I'm very impressed with it, especially considering that it was on sale for $650 at Best Buy.

My point is, I'm glad Gateway is getting back into the game again. They really needed to step it up. And Acer backing them can only mean good things for the company.
