Anticipation was high for the Bill Gates and Jerry Seinfeld ads when they debuted earlier this month.  After all, they paired one of comedy's greats with a father figure of the tech industry -- that should surely be enough to take on feisty Apple computers, right?  Not, so it turns out. 

First the initial ad was blasted across the internet as being nonsensical, unfunny, and generally pointless.  Said ZDNet, "Maybe I’m off base here but I think if Microsoft is trying to engage people with this ad, it has failed miserably."

Gizmodo piped in, "There's not really a whole lot of anything, including laughs, information or pimping of Vista. It's kinda like Seinfeld's really long, really rambling Superman ad for Amex he did a few years back."

The LA Times said the first ad had disturbing racial overtones and generally was in bad taste.  Their blogger remarked, "It pulls none of the emotional strings that might have helped Microsoft "reconnect" with its audience (not that I remember ever being connected to them)."

Criticism for the clips taken from the second full length ad was less vitriolic, but it was not glowing either.  The 4-5 minutes spot about Bill Gates and Seinfeld moving in with a suburban family had its funny points, but again struggled to make a clear connection to a product.

A couple days ago a frenzy of reports began circulating around the internet stating that the seemingly inevitable was about to happen -- Microsoft was pulling the plug on the Gates and Seinfeld spots.  While the gist of this statement may be true, the official word is that the ads are not canceled but merely on "hiatus" and may appear back again at any time.

The true story first began to surface when a Crispin Porter + Bogusky, the ad firm in charge of the campaign and also responsible for the latest Burger King commercials, contradicted the reports according to Gizmodo.

While the old ads may not be gone for good, Microsoft has moved on to "Phase 2", with brand new spots.  The first of these entitled "I'm a PC" aired last night on NBC's popular comedy The Office.  The ads open with a John Hodgeman lookalike saying that PC users have fallen victim to stereotyping.  It then shows off Windows users ranging from geek, like Gates and Deepak Chopra, to glamorous like Eva Longoria and Tony Parker.  Seinfeld was conspicuously absent in the new commercials.

The new ads received a much warmer reception.  As Gizmodo puts it the ads "definitely beat the crap out of those (ill-fated?) Gates/Seinfeld ads when it comes to making a point."

Another funny part comes in the second version of the spot, where, at the end, top MMA fighter Rashad Evans spits out, "I'm a PC.  You got a problem with that."

No one answers, but it seems likely that Justin Long would suddenly have not much to say if he were around.  Indeed, the line delivers the sentiment many frustrated PC owners had been feeling themselves for a long time, but were perhaps not intimidating enough to say.

Perhaps the strongest aspects of these new ads are the parts where they show a variety of everyday people stating the perhaps soon-to-become-iconic line "I'm a PC".  They also seamlessly tie together these with comments on the people’s occupations -- such as an environmental activist, a McCain campaign staffer, an Obama blogger, and even an astronaut.  And there's a bit of randomness too, with comments on the people's facial features like beards and glasses, without losing the point or sounding too inane.  It all ties together into a sort of spot that’s significantly more endearing and even a bit funny.

While Gates and Seinfeld may not be done with their strange antics, the new lifeblood of the Windows campaign seems to have been pumped.  Microsoft finally realized that it should give the people what they've been asking for all along -- a direct and witty response to the snarky "Get a Mac" commercials.

I just saw the "I'm a PC" ad last night and it was bounds better than anything they have ever done, IMO. It makes the Mac ads seem even more pretentious than they actually are. After painfully watching Mr. Gates adjust his underwear and do the robot, this is a welcome change.

Why Microsoft hasn't been doing commercials like this all along is beyond me.

My favorite part was the end of the one, which had Rashad Evans. He'd probably snap Justin Long in half. I know more than a few MMA fans were probably happy about that one, even though he's a bit of a heel.

I also was a fan of the "I have a beard" line. Now that is random but FUNNY. Good job Microsoft, IMO.

what's kinda funny is that on apple's own website they admit "the new mac is a PC at heart".. and then in their ads they go to such great lengths to separate the two. ha.

You are missing the point.

Microsoft isn't the one that tied the phrase "I'm a PC" with Windows. Apple did that on their own.

Most tech-literate people said WTF? when they saw what apple was doing. We knew that PC didn't equal Windows.

Now, after over 2 years of Apple telling everyone that PC = Windows and PC = old & boring, the idea that PC = Windows is now a part of popular culture, like it or not. So in a sheer stroke of genius, that I didn't see comming, Microsoft took its forced branding of being a PC and ran with it. Pure genius.

I think the other aspect of this campaign is that it effectivly pulls the rug out from the I'm a Mac comercials. I think they will be much less effective when you have a whole slew of home made videos of people proudly proclaiming "I'm a PC!"

Well, I do think they should push Vista specifically a bit in forthcoming editions. And yes, PC doesnt have to mean Windows but by and large it does.

PC side note: I know a girl, studying for the A+, who OCR scanned her study guide and uses Vista's accessability features to make Microsoft Sam read it to her.

LOL, but seriously, if Microsoft can run with this and make some money by selling more copies of Windows, great for them.

Isn't the point of advertising to sell more of whatever? If it works, then Microsoft should give Apple a pat on the back for starting it all (but of course not any of the money made, they are a business after all).

I, for one, like being a PC :). When do I get to be in the commercials?

Microsoft sells 92% of the operating systems in the world. They also have a very successful product called Microsoft Office. They don't need to advertise anything.

Microsoft is running these commercials to ease people's idea of Vista... ideas that the Mac commercials put in people's mind. Even after 3 years of Mac commercials bashing Windows, Microsoft still doesn't have any problems selling its products. They're just getting ready for the next version of Windows.

In my experience with computers, starting in the 80's. Computers that ran a Microsoft OS were called IBMs or IBM Compatible or IBM Clone. PC was a term used for computers you had at home and/or workstations.

When Linux became more popular the term Wintel showed up. Now because of Apple anything other than a Mac is called a PC. I guess Wintel doesn't have the same ring to it.

The original IBM product was the "IBM PC" and the compatible machines that followed were refered to as "IBM PC Compatible", "IBM Compatible", or (what I heard the most) "PC Compatible".


Yes, there were other personal computers, but the "PC" initials because synonymous with the IBM PC/DOS-type machines pretty fast.

I don't think so. The average Joe doesn't know what Windows really is. Most people think that "the internet" is the IE shortcut on your desktop. That's why most people think PC computers are boxes running Windows. They have no idea what Linux is and since all the PCs that are displayed in stores are running Windows "PC" term became a box running Windows.

To geeks this terminology may not be correct but to the average consumer it makes sense. PC with Windows = PC. Apple has nothing to do with this. Apple chose to use the term PC because consumers understand what it means. Apple wasn't targeting professionals or geeks with those ads.

As others have already said, "PC == windows" is an Apple generated concept. What Apple makes and sells also are PC's but Apple wanted to differentiate the Apple PC from the IBM PC (and compatibles) so their marketing pushed to separate the two. Reason for doing that is to not have people compare their product's prices with those others -- can't do that because after all "they make PC's and we make something else".

Apple had been different because they didn't have x86 processors, and so couldn't have been called "IBM PC compatible". Of course, that's changed now, but for a long time before the switch to Intel processors, it was the case. So the distinction does make historic sense, especially during the 90's, when most households got their first computer.

True, but note too that even the Apple ][ was a "PC", it just wasn't an IBM compatible one.

Apple PC's have had many CPU's (let's see: x86, PPC, 68K, 650x, and I'm not sure what was in the Apple I, I saw it at the first Atlantic City computer faire in 19mumble but don't recall if it was a 650x (which I suspect). Don't recall what was in the Lisa either (although I did enjoy playing with one between frequent reboots -- one we had made Windows 9x seem stable).

PC = Personal Computer.. which usually means a machine used by the end user. It has nothing to do with the OS, Apple gave it that label. Windows, OSX, and Linux are all PC Operating systems.

The OP is correct, Apple gave Microsoft the label, now they are using it to their advantage.

You should explain your "tech literacy" to Daily Tech writers! The article confirms the point of the confusion (or someone else's perceived "Brilliance").

PCs are a "IBM Compatible" hardware standard. Always have been since the early 1980's. Now you have Dell selling "PC"s with Linux" installed. I have PC's with Windows and Linux installed because linux is PC compatible. PC is just the box.
The irony is that Apple never targeted Windows, just the PC and let the customer draw the conclusion. Apple has been known not to use "Industry Standard" equipment and they haven't been known as PC compatible. Most "tech-literate people" know that.

That doesn't deter the fact that PCs are generic, (and until the Intel switch, Apple has never been PC compatible, hackers created that)and windows is unique. So whats your take on this? (this is the same thing Intel ran into)

Personally about the ad agency using mac's to make the ads... who cares.

If Toyota hired an ad agency that used Fords to drive around should Toyota fire them? Of course not, it's just a silly way to try and spit in someones eye. I mean, come on, should Microsoft screen all their ad agencies to make sure they're a Windows only shop?

For $300 million, I would demand it. Otherwise, it hypocritical. If Intel made a commercial (with AMD chips) to show the power of their processors , you don't think Intel would be embarrassed? Give it a few weeks and MS will change this. Just the fact that MS feels cornered by Apple speaks volumes. The 800 lb gorilla perceives Apple as a threat.
Also, why drop money into a market that you have 95% control? I would rather drop $300 mil in Zune advertising and see a return. This whole concept to take on the little guy is retarded. It makes them look insecure about their product line.

This is why you don't run your own company nor make decisions on how to spend $300 million.

Microsoft is currently number 1. Microsoft would like to stay number 1. A company does not stay number 1 by letting its competitor define its public image, regardless of the competiors size. Microsoft needs to engage its customers to make them proud to be using Microsoft products. This whole campaign ins't "Hey you should switch to a PC" this campaign is, partially, about "hey I'm a PC and I don't have all these stupid issues that others say I do. In fact I'm quite productive. I'm proud to be a PC and I want to tell people why!"

There was a really good blog by Kathy Sierra called "Creating Passionate Users." It wasn't about just creating useful products for people, but making people proud and passionate about your product/service/company. You've seen the Reality Distortion Field putout by Steve Jobs, it is an amazing thing to behold and is very effective in keeping the company proffitable. Apple users not only love their Macs but feel the need to tell everyone else why anything non-mac sucks. It is great business and great marketing.

Microsoft's biggest fault is not doing this sooner.

I know this is a tech site and not a business site, but it would really make the discussions a bit more useful and educational if people really thought about all the many facets of why these tech companies make certain business decisions. Instead it usually decends down to personal emotional comments of how stupid company xyz is for doing this or not doing that.

One of the most improtant things I learned in my Strategic Management class in college (My degree is in Business: MIS) was that there are no right or wrong decisions, only decisions that hopefully turn out better than others.

If Apple does't use industry standard 'equipment' then why can Windows and Linux run on Mac equipment? Windows and Linux wern't designed for the 'non-standard' Mac equipment.

All Apple did was take generic PC hardware and then put a special key in it to allow their OS.

Okay, the OP was probably referring to pre-2006 Apple strategies, when they used Motorola CPUs (non x86, therefore no Windows without virtualization). Nowadays, Macs can run Windows just fine because they've switched to Intel processors (x86). But as for Linux, it could always run on Apple computers. Linux can be compiled for any kind of processor, and I personally knew people running Linux on their PowerPC Macs. Linux wasn't designed to be run on any specific platform.

These days, all Apple does is take PC hardware (usually not generic, it's usually pretty decent stuff) and provide the software support (drivers, &c.) to allow OS X to successfully run on the hardware.

But anyway, the OP was referencing the historical distinction, when Macs were not IBM PC compatible machines, and that's why they weren't grouped in under the "PC" heading, even though they were literally "Personal Computers".

It seems that when an ad is so ambiguous that it is subject to rampant interpretation, it's not a well produced ad. Obviously most people are in serious disagreement about the meaning of this particular ad, so, I guess it's not a very good one. Also, IMO, Gates looked like an ass doing those robot gestures and was, generally, nerdy in his affectation. Seinfeld was, as usual, a pompous git. That's about all I have to say about those silly ads except that I hope we don't see anymore of them.

I'm going to use Vista now because I have a beard, too. I used to use it because it came pre-installed on my laptop, but now I have a new reason to use it. I also feel more qualified to fight in the MMA. But that's because I stayed at a Holiday Inn Express last night.

Microsoft's rebuttal to the "I'm a Mac" adds is pure genius. In a sense, Microsoft managed to pull the proverbial "race card" in a dispute between operating systems!

Microsoft just likened Apples PC bashing to ageism, racism, sexism, and any other ism you can think of and now Apple kinda looks like a bigoted @$$ hole.

The references are subtle but we live in the most political correctness focused country in the world so I think this is really going to resonate. Pure genius.

Just because a bunch of loony blogers are proclaiming, in a circle-jerk fassion, that the Jerry ads were awful doesn't make it so. If anyone wants to actually read a real news article about it, or read from the horses mouth at you'll realize that the Sinfield ads were meant to simply kick-start the conversation by getting people talking about them. Also, early reports show that the Jerry/Bill ads were very very successful.

From all reliable indications this is going to be a prolonged ad campaign and we are just now seeing the first signs of meat.

Anyways. When I first heard about the ad campaign I thought it would be foolish for Microsoft to engage Apple, least it give credence to the silly Apple ads. However what they have done with these "I'm a PC" ad is pure genius. It is a devistating form of marketing Judo against Apple. Apple spent a lot of time and money getting everyone familiar with "I'm a PC" and "I'm a Mac" where the Mac would, very suavely, belittle and humilliate the PC. Now Microsoft is taking the the idea of "I'm a PC" and wraping themselves up in it, without mentioning the Mac, very smart.

Also, part of this campaign is to encourage people to make videos of why they're "A PC."

So my biggest question is will Apple continue with the "I'm a Mac & I'm a PC" ads? It seems to me that if they continue to run those ads they will now be insulting the people they want to win over, since now Microsoft is encouraging people to be a PC.

I've been saying since Vista was released that Microsoft needs more marketing. I'm glad they finally realized that because I'm tired of listening to know-nothing idiots tell me how crappy my OS is.

I agree. As it is already, the PC character in Apple's ads is more interesting and likable than the smug, dressed-like-a-bum Mac dude. What's really interesting is that Apple dresses PC in a drab, beige suit, even though the beige box PC died quite some time ago. PC's come in more shapes, sizes and colors than Macs.

Have you seen the Burger King commercials?? They have got to be in the top 10 worst commercials of all times. If that ad agency was proud of something, I wouldn't talk about Burger King...

Burger King took a Grand Prix for the USA in the Titanium category for a promotion that included TV ads, a website and three original video games for Microsoft's Xbox starring BK's King. Titanium awards honor ideas that redefine the industry, in this case taking advantage of gaming as a new ad platform.

The $5 million promotion created by U.S. agency Crispin Porter + Bogusky helped push up BK earnings 40% for the quarter in which it rolled out. BK has sold 3.5 million games at $3.99 each with a meal purchase.

"It was a well-crafted campaign, and they took a risk," says judge Colleen DeCourcy, creative group head of digital business at JWT New York. "It stood head and shoulders above other things."

I'm not saying that the ads aren't successful. I just don't understand why they are successful. I mean really, the commercials are totally dumb. All of the BKs near me have almost no business, while the other comparable fast food joints are thriving (McDonalds, Hardees, Wendys, Taco Bell, Arbys, etc). I actually thought they were going out of business back around the time Hardees seemed to be going down the tubes. Alas, Hardees made a comeback and Burger King continued to suck wind. Does anyone here like their commercials? If so, please explain why. Thanks!

So why is it that every two-bit blogger or reporter uses the word "nonsensical". Sounds very much like bloggers blogging bloggers Mr. Mick.

Maybe American's just are not getting the point. If there is no laugh track, they don't know when to laugh.

The most popular late night "comedian" in America is Jay Leno. A guy who delivers a punch line and then explains the punch line for viewers too stupid to catch the "subtlety" of his joke.

The problem is not Microsoft or Bill Gates or Jerry Seinfeld. It's just a sad commentary on American society.

Just last night I downloaded Apple Safari...I took to it instantly. Its so blissfully uncluttered. Itunes is the same way. For the longest time I paid no attention to Apple, but not any more. I see a Mac heading my way.

As a software engineer, surely you are aware of the concept of an API, which allows software engineers to do their job while remaining totally oblivious to the inner workings of the OS. Unless, I suppose, your standard of a "new" OS is a total lack of backwards compatibility.

I read this blog word for word - from start to finish. It's a first for me with one of your blogs. It was very informative and I thank you for the time you put into it.

I'm glad that Microsoft started an ad campaign finally after a year and a half of the product being on the market. It's still a bad time for sales in this economy but a response to the continued lies from Apple were warranted. Have a great day!

I like that, as opposed to the mac commercials, these commercials seem to be taking the high road. They say nothing negative about mac os, but simply say positive things about windows (or more accurately "there's nothing wrong with using windows"). Anyway, I like that. A refreshing/unexcepted turn away from the political campaign type slandering of competitors we must normally endure.

Hope to never see another bill & Jerry commercial again... pointless, other than the nice paycheck that Jerry got.

The NEW "I'm a PC" Ads are much much better. Not funny or silly... just an ad.

But you know... anyone could have FUN with that AD and change the end of it with Utunbu Linux Logo... Since a PC technically be anything (usually not a Mac). ;)

But my own personal take "I'm a PC... but because I have to use it to be compatible with everyone else. Love it, no. But it works."

The MS ads seem very defensive to me, but I guess that's unavoidable with the perception problems they are having with PC. They seem to say "Mac says we're not cool, but hey, we are! Really..." The Mac ads have done their job, whether these ads do, remains to be seen.

It's just like Microsoft to go into defensive mode. But, that is what Microsoft does. All of Microsoft's successful products are re-engineered products of other companies. If it wasn't for Apple who would Microsoft copy?

Microsoft needs to work at coming up with their own original ideas. Oh, wait a minute. I guess they have tried:
- Windows ME
- Windows Bob
- Clippy
- SPOT watch
- Microsoft Creative Writer
- Microsoft Actimates
- MSN Network
- Windows Vista

Whatever happened to advertising PRODUCTS? If you can't market Vista as being good software...then why bother?

It's a sad day when advertising no longer promotes products and services, but competition has becoming all about PR. I want to see reasons to buy Microsoft products, not be targeted with brainwashing ads about how great their company is compared to an even lousier company.

Macs are overpriced pcs with an outdated OS, they are virtually un-upgradable, they don't play video games or even offer a decent selection of software. When you don't want a choice, choose a mac. For mac users, the best advice I can give is this: 1- mac boiled until soft, 3- cups processed cheese, 1/4 cup of milk. Mix until you have attained the desired consitency, enjoy!

Typical ahole mac guy that can dish it out but can't take it so he pulls a "funny" and throws a blue screen is. Funny thing is I can't remember the last time I actually saw one.

As I understand it, in today's world, BSODs are caused mostly by hardware faults or poor drivers... I think it's pretty rare, in general, for the Windows OS to be the source of one.

The last Mac I owned (dual G5 PowerMac) also got BSODs, except that on OSX, the "B" stands for Black, as in "Black Screen of Death." It basically is a kernel panic, and the screen tells you to reboot in 3-4 different languages. For me, the crashes made no sense most of the time, as they would happen completely at random--stress or 3rd party apps were rarely involved.

Then there's another form of OSX lockup that I've heard many users refer to as the "Spinning Beach Ball of Death." In that case, the mouse cursor turns into what looks like a spinning beach ball (which is basically the equivalent to the hour glass) when the system hangs. You can move the mouse around, but that's about it. Sometimes the system recovers from the spinning beach ball, other times a hard reset is required, hence it also gets the honor of the "of death" ending as well. Do a google search on either and you'll see they're real and relatively well known in the Mac community.

In my experience, the OSX crashes seemed more random and frustrating, and it eventually drove me back to the PC, which I have found to be much more stable. Right now, my only issue on Vista is "HL2.exe has stopped responding," which Valve refuses to acknowledge as a widespread issue. :\

I'm a both..

I thought the Sienfield/Gates ad sucked. It was so lame and didn't touch a single thing with computers or diversity of PC users.
I was so disappointed that someone in Microsoft decided that was worth $10 million, hope they got fired, I know I would have if I made that ad on that budget.

the 1984 Apple ad, was so much better, and 1/10 of the budget, $900000 commercial, which was outrageous those days..

The "I'm a PC" is much better ad then the Steinfield/Gates ad, and I'm sure didnt cost 1/3 of the cost.

As For BSOD.. I saw one 2 days ago.. Decided to Update my GPU drivers. Reverted back all said and done.

I can't remember the last time when I saw a BSOD exactly. However, the only ones I ever do see are caused by one of two things. Either graphics driver faults, both ATI and Nvidia, or during stress testing when overclocking. Not Windows fault.

The candy wheel/beach ball of death I have seen on more than one occasion in the last couple of months in my computer science labs. Bloody frustrating when a mornings coding gets corrupted and not something I have happen on my home computers.

They are not marketing "Vista" so much as "Windows" and "PC". Everyone sees Mac vs PC commercials, so Microsoft is hitting back by referring to themselves as PC, and that the PC is used by everyone and everywhere.

No it doesn't. The thrust of this campaign is to humanize the PC. Not as a tool that does things, but as an extension of ones self. Image is everything in marketing; Apple knows this and has been very good at growing their image.

Marketing campaigns are about connecting people to their product or service, and I agree with you, thankfully Republicans are very very good at this. :)

Oh, and I'm a PC.

Most of the Mac ads are incredibly misleading and some are blatant false advertising.

I love Apple computers in this x86 era as well as the iPod and iPhone. While their ad campaign was witty and comical initially, they have drug on too long and it time to move on.

I love the PC ad b/c I feel like Msft has taken the higher road. Instead of making some some-what childish ad that directly and blatantly make fun of another company, they do something that is funny but overall more serious and it shows how big the world is and how much computers impact the world.

Not really; marketing has always been a challenge for computer technology... a great example is AMD.

Apple is in a unique position since their ads are playing on the sterotype of PCs being dorky and difficult to use.

Since most graphic design houses use Macs somewhere in production, they can tap into their personal feelings when designing an ad.
