Niko Bellic and company soar towards the half billion USD mark.

Pundits were itching to see a battle between Iron Man and Grand Theft Auto IV (GTA IV) last week. Some predicted that GTA IV would take a chunk out of Iron Man ticket sales, but that didn't turn out to be the case -- Iron Man managed to rack up over $100M during its first three-day weekend.

GTA IV also had a stellar opening and surpassed the lofty estimates that were thrown about for the past few weeks. Early estimates opined that GTA IV would generate $400M in sales during its first week. According to Take-Two, however, GTA IV pulled in a whopping $310M globally during the first 24 hours of availability and brought in $500M during its first week.

3.6M units were sold on opening day and more than 6M units were sold during the first week.

"We knew Grand Theft Auto IV would break new ground in terms of the player's experience, with its compelling story line, extraordinary gameplay and action that ranges over a broad urban canvas. Now, it has broken sales and rating records as well," said Take-Two chairman Strauss Zelnick. "Grand Theft Auto IV's first week performance represents the largest launch in the history of interactive entertainment, and we believe these retail sales levels surpass any movie or music launch to date."

The huge opening for GTA IV is no doubt attributable to the growing anticipation for the game once the initial delay was announced last fall along with the steady trickle of information relating to the game’s mechanics, story, and gameplay that was brought to the public's attention.

It also helped that nearly every gaming review site around the globe gave GTA IV a perfect or near-perfect score which further piqued the interests of potential buyers who may have been sitting on the fence.

Given the resounding success of GTA IV during its opening day and week, it should be interesting to see how Electronics Arts repositions itself in its bid to purchase Take-Two.

My $60 went into the pot.

But god I hope EA isn't able to purchase Take Two. Or this will probably be the last good GTA. EA will ruin it.

I agree, but sadly I think EA will win in the end.

After hearing that Spore will be launching with an even more invasive DRM then Bioshock, my hate for EA went to an all new level.

Any link to this info? Not doubting you just curious because I was interested in Spore. But I'm not installing a game that puts shit on my system like Bioshock did (I didn't get it either just heard about it).

I'm trying to cut back on my game spending so it was either Mass Effect or Haze this month. This has made my decision easier. They wonder why PC gaming is dying. EA and BioWare are officially dead to me.

According to Wikipedia, Halo 3 only made $300 million during its first week. Looks like GTA IV claims the crown.

Kinda apples/oranges. Just think if Halo 3 had launched on 360 and PS3 with the same number of consoles in the wild as today. Not discrediting the record revenue, but it's just not that black and white.

I had a chance to play GTA4 the other day... glitched into a wall within 5 minutes. I really didn't think the shooting controls were that much better than previous GTA games. TeamXbox gave this 10/10? Really? Really?

A lot of people agree with ya.

I think the game is fun, but equally forgettable as Halo 3. I just don't think its the greatest game since the coming of mankind like some people are making it out to be. Once I beat it, I seriously question its replay value. Its fun, don't get me wrong. But a perfect 10 ???

The PC version, hopefully, will address some graphical issues I have with it. One being the fairly short and hazy draw distance. And the second being, for a high def next generation title, there are still far too many jaggy lines. Cranking up the Anti Ailiasing on the PC will take care of that.

Dang, it just came out a week ago, you already beat it? I am probably on 30% completion. Just starting on Packies missions.

They said the game contains 100 hours of game play...

Nah I didn't mean I beat it yet. I'm probably about where you are. Have done a few Packie jobs. LOL, that guy is a pretty cool character huh.

I'm actually moving through GTA4 much faster than any other GTA I have played before. Rampaging has been harshly nerfed in this version so I'm moving through the story missions a lot faster then I used to. Rampaging is what I call it when I just go around and see how long I can be killing and chaosing before the police and feds finally bring me down. Its a lot harder to keep that going in this game. Also the police respawn rate is INSANE in GTA4. They are literally everywhere it feels like.

Oh I read it as "Once I beat it, I (started) to question its replay value" lol

Remember the game data is a replica of NYC. I read on a few other sites they took actual street camera footage to capture the demographics and police data of each area.

I found this to be very true. The best way I have found to stay alive is get in a pretty sturdy car and burn rubber.

The cops are pretty good at shooting out your tires for some reason and if your car is too light it will skid out of control and if its too heavy it will flip.

That is another reason why I say the game is more movie-esque and much more realistic. You cant go on a rampage on Madison Square and expect to stay in a four-way cross street and live. The cops will tell you to surrender and if you don't they will gun you down. If you try to escape they will shoot out your tires and baracade every road.

The game is much more realistic than the previous versions; characters are smarter.

You don't get it. It's the gameplay man! the gameplay!! I could care less about graphics as long as I have good gameplay. Thats what gaming is all about! GTA4 delilvers.

The game play is great but it is not perfect IMO. I personally don't like the shooting controls very much and let's face it shooting is a big part of the game.

I would give it flat 9

You have to remember most people playing GTA IV are most likely used to existing console graphics. Not everyone has the money (or desire ) to spend obscene amounts of money every year or two on new hardware for the latest games. That said, I'm sure Crysis looks great at 2560x1600 on a 30" monitor with 9800GX2 SLI.

$300mil is correct.

And since I know it's only a matter of time before someone reminds us that Halo3 was only released for 1 system, I'll do the math ahead of time...

Claims are that the 360 version has sold 2:1 in comparison to the PS3 version, which would put the 360 verion of GTA IV alone at $334mil. Now let's say those numbers are bloated and really it was 1.5:1 then the 360 version still sold $300mil tieing with Halo3.

The only one to claim 2:1 was MS, and in their statement they said "anectdotal evidence" which was shown to be off, way off.

I'm hearing 60:40 (your 1.5:1) being tossed around, which would land it squarely at $300M, but the userbase is bigger now than in the Halo period.

The graphics & gameply deliver to me. Given the scope of the game & the limitations of the console, R* did an amazing job here. I just finished the funeral scene & the story telling is also breathtaking. This might be my favorite game this gen so far. Is the game perfect, hellno, perfect games I don't expect, but damn good...

I wonder why ppl think PC gaming is dying. Ya, I love to be stuck to old ass hardware. May not seem old now, but give it another 5-6 years and tell me how that goes.

While you were stuck playing Halo 2, we had games like Doom 3, Fear, HL², Knights of the Old Republic 2, BF2, etc.

Even now certain games simply suck on a console. Any kind of RTS blows on a console, when compared to it's PC brethren. Have yet to see an MMORPG translate well onto a console. Starcraft 2 will probably never touch a console.

Then there's the stupid exclusives. If you want all games, you have to get all three consoles. Sometimes multiple versions of the same console. To get all PC games you simply need one PC.

I have a PC, Japanese PS3, Japanese Xbox 360, and US Xbox 360. Stupid Microsoft for not making the 360 have region free games.

Halo 3 was only available for the 360. GTA IV was available for 360 and PS3. I'm sure if they showed the 360 sales, they've be near even.
