Finalists have been selected in the contest to name the 2011 Chevy Volt EV's silver-green paint color. All the finalists get a free trip to the LA Auto Show, while one will win a chance to drive the Volt.  (Source: GM-Volt.com)
A few lucky individuals vie for the chance to name the highest profile electric vehicle's paint and prizes

The 2011 Chevrolet Volt is arguably the highest profile electric vehicle.  With the entire industry slowly drifting towards EVs, public reception of the Volt is critical not only the electric movement, but to the future of GM as well.

Last month GM announced a special contest to name the original Volt paint color -- silver with a "touch" of emerald hue.  On Sunday, GM posted a blog announcing the winners who will get a free trip to the Los Angeles Auto Show, with one lucky winner getting selected on December 1 to test drive a pre-production Volt.

The winning entries were Viridian Joule, submitted by David Thomas of Sanford, Florida; environMINT, submitted by Matthew Valbuena of Rancho Santa Margarita, California; and EV-ergreen, submitted by Devin McQuarrie of San Jose, California.

GM selected entries based on a variety of criteria, particularly that they fit with the Volt's green/high-tech vision.  Some who submitted similar entries were disappointed -- GM processed the entries on a first come, first serve basis, so later entries of the same (or similar) names were discarded.  Other favorites of the GM staff not selected for the big three included Joule of the Nile, High Ohm Silver!, Kermit the Fog and Bye Bye Foreign Oil Blue.

You can vote here for which of the three finalists you think should win from November 16 at 8 a.m. ET through December 1 at 8 a.m. ET.

Well at least we know their names, that's the hardest part. Now the easy part, arranging a bus to hit them.

Do they really expect hybrids/EVs to be accepted by the mainstream when they keep doing stuff like this? There is no reason that electric cars need to be to marketed as eco-friendly hippie mobiles. There are plenty of real world financial benifits that should be emphasized, instead they chose to endulge the environmentally zealous minority.

I was highly considering buying a Volt until I saw how they changed the physical design from the sporty concept car to being a Prius clone bubble car. The 3% gain in aerodynanics, or whatever it might be, is not worth alienating the vast majority of Americans. Most people dont want to look like an eco-nut. If you gave me a Prius or a Volt for free I would sell it and use the money for gas for my Jeep.

If they ever want a significant market share outside of california they need to rethink their strategy.

That's better than the name I submitted. I guess they didn't like dead battery blah.

No. Joule is a unit of measurement that describes quanities of Energy (or a person). Its not like say Lead and Banana that while not colors (grey/yellow) are associated strongly with a color.

It would be like describing a blue color as
"Azure Inch"

What makes Azure Inch different than Azure? I have no idea....

You do realize that Viridian is a color?

This just follows the conventions of other carmakers, just reversed. For example, what the heck is "Electric Blue"? Blue is not electric, you can argue. But those words add "character" to the car.

This time aroud, with the Volt GM decided to reverse the convention and call it [color] then [character word]. Hence the Viridian Joule.

That's how I take it.
