GM wants to sell lots more Volts

General Motors hasn't exactly been burning up the sales charts with its Chevrolet Volt extended range electric vehicle. However, the auto giant hopes to increase the sales figures for the Volt significantly this year.

The Washington Post claims that GM hopes to build 36,000 Volts and other plug-in hybrids for delivery during 2013. That represents a 20% increase compared to 2012.

Analyst Jim Hall from 2953 Analytics said that 36,000 is "probably a doable number." He added, "It will have a full calendar year in Europe." The analyst also believes that the fact that the Volt is now eligible for the California carpool lanes will also help increase sales.

GM struggled to sell the Volt during some months of last year, but blamed poor sales during November on a lack of inventory for the vehicle.

“We had some on and off starts with the assembly plant,” said GM marketing director Christi Landy said. “California, which is our strongest market, was selling great then they would have no products. They’ve run out of products probably three or four times in the last 12 months, it’s been very frustrating.”
The second vehicle to use the Voltec platform in the U.S. will also launch shortly. The two-door Cadillac ELR is set to debut later this year, but its price of entry will likely be much higher than the Volt’s $39,145.

I'll laugh if the Model S outsells the Volt. After all, Volt's are sitting on the lots across the country while Tesla is now selling hundreds a month with no end in sight.

-Tesla's maximum production capacity is only 20k/yr.

-Obviously you didn't read the article if you think Volts are merely sitting on the lots.

Well it is also a much more expensive car as well.

The Volt is expensive enough to appeal to a limited audience, but I would personally find it amusing if Volt sales were eroded by Tesla.

Lately after having to drive in commute traffic in CA I have seen many Volts and Teslas, the Tesla is by far more desirable IMO. Not sure what designers at GM were smoking when they came out with the final design.

* Volt sells more than Corvette, and among all cars ranks somewhere in the middle, even among cars that cost about the same
* Volt's R&D costs are mainly stuck in Motors Liquidation (the "old" GM entity that went bankrupt) so it turns out that the "new" GM actually earns a profit on Volts sold. Their PR would rather not remind the taxpayers and shareholders that took the brunt of the bankrupcy about that fact tho :p

I do fear GM falling back into complacency, and would like to see a true Gen2 of the Voltec powertrain with a proper genset that's purpose-built rather than an off-the-shelf iron lump, and a 400Wh/kg or better newer-tech battery, along with a 10kW charger and a 5th seat (battery entirely under the car). A higher-voltage battery with a 200kW motor would be pretty spectacularly-performing, and a purpose-built drivetrain could have the motor integrated into the engine block (or vice versa), though I'd prefer to see a turbine or SOFC with steam reclamation for gas conversion efficiencies >50% ..

Depends on what your looking at. Unit sales or gross sales.

Price point is key in any kind of product you sell.

Personally, I'd go for the Tesla any day of the week, if I could afford it. Regarding the Volt...not as appealing to me, even if the price was lower.

Just my personal feelings, I don't care about being "First" when it comes to having a product for the sake of having it. I'm more focused on my personal experience. The Tesla would not be my "Road-Trip" car of choice, but as a daily driver to work and back.... Absolutely I would use it each day. That's where I do most of my weekly is the same with many others.

With the Volt, my ~50mi round-trip commute is entirely electric.

Between it and my 40mpg bike, I paid $311 for gasoline in 2012, or about $6/week.

Teslas look really nice, and if they can get newer battery techs that push 400-600Wh/kg for the same or lower price than current tech (promised by LiS, Envia, etc) then I'd certainly be interested in a $50-60k Tesla S with 100kWh battery that weighs ~4200lbs and does 0-60 in 3.5-4 seconds.

In the meantime, I only need and have one car, and the Volt fits my use case pretty nicely. I would of course like more power, more electric range, faster charger, etc. But I'm looking forward to Voltec 2.0 and 3.0, and hope GM doesn't fall back into complacency (which I did fear given the ELR has such minor tweaks to Voltec, more like Voltec 1.2 or something).

I was in the market for a new car a year and half ago and considered the Volt but there was a 6 month wait in my area. I didn't buy a Volt and it was primarily due to that 6 month wait.

Volt production was suspended due to lack of demand last year. Could be that your decision to buy coincided with that time-frame.

Even if it wasn't available locally, it could have been shipped to your dealer or you could have flown out and driven it back. If you were really serious in getting one....a 6 month wait or traveling to pick one up, would have been minor considering you will probably own it for 5 or more years.

I looked between 6 months to a year to find the exact model/features/price for both my convertible (Michigan) and truck (Texas)...and recent purchase of a HD Street Glide. Just drove 2,200 plus miles to pick it up with my truck. It may seem odd that I would go to these lengths, but I knew exactly what I wanted and will be keeping each vehicle for at least 10 years or more.

Bottom line....I don't think you were seriously interested in a volt. I may be wrong, but if you truly'd be driving one now.

Badly managed dealerships with poorly trained salesmen are the reason cars don't move off the lots. I know this because some dealerships move Volts
Right. They need more expert salesmen to close all those "impulse" buys.

I know this because some dealerships move Volts and others simply don't and that goes for all over the country.

Yeah, you have different cultural values in different parts of the country. In lots of areas in California you are hip and cool for driving a prius or volt. In neighborhoods in Kentucky they would no doubt call you a hippie qu eer.

Yeah, of course the testla is a premium car that will appeal to a niche market that has lots of diposable cash and puts a premium on environmentalism or at least the appearance of. Think hollywood or wealthy california suburbs. These same people who can shell out the cash aren't going to want the volt.

It currently costs GM "at least" $75,000 to build the Volt, including development costs, Munro said. That's nearly twice the base price of the Volt before a $7,500 federal tax credit provided as part of President Barack Obama's green energy policy.

Other estimates range from $76,000 to $88,000, according to four industry consultants contacted by Reuters. The consultants' companies all have performed work for GM and are familiar with the Volt's development and production. They requested anonymity because of the sensitive nature of their auto industry ties.

So best case scenario. GM gets $47,500 per vehicle, costs them $76,000 to make. That's still a $28,500 loss per vehicle. If we then take all volts sold in the US from start through january 2013, 32,598 volts times $28,500 per volt.

Means GM has lost $929,043,000 - nearly a billion - on volt sales so far in the US alone. Best estimate. Not entirely impossible either since GM's biggest loss was $38,9 billion in 2007.

This isn't strange either since GM - before being taken over by the government - always stated the Volt itself was a Engineering car and never ment to make them a profit. It was ment to pioneer the technology for the next "volt".

In comes the government "which can never fail" and suddenly the volt has to be a sales succes. Never mind that the more they sell the worse the company actually does, the government can't fail! We'll sell even more next year!

Honestly, i'd say if you can afford one get one, you definitly get the best tech at that price. Gas prices are only going to go up in the future, this car'll last you 10 years at least. The next car won't be better, just cheaper. And it must be cheap right now, production was halted twice in 2012 and they've produced almost 10k more volts then they've sold in total.

Not to worry about GM going backrupt again either. As long as this dictatorship is in power it won't be allowed to fail.

If I remember Toyota was selling the prius for a loss when it first went on the market. They eventually figured out how to turn a profit on it. It could be the same thing happens here, future volt generations might end up being profitable.

Motors Liquidation got stuck with most of the development costs for the Volt. Motors Liquidation, aka "Old GM", is the entity that went bankrupt and had much of those legacy costs erased in Chapter 11.

Volt actually costs less to manufacture (minus those bankrupted-away sunk R&D and tooling costs) than it costs for the customer to buy, so accounting-wise each Volt sold is profitable to the "New GM".

They don't like telling people that though, since it reminds them of the highly unpopular bankrupcy and bailout.

The volt concept was a cool looking car for the future, and I wanted one. The volt production is meh! The current volt with full sized people has no rear leg room, so forget about taking another set of adults in the back seat. I hope that the ELR keeps its current form and if they can dial in the pricing, I might be a customer.

It's missing a couple of doors.

Voltec on a larger platform such as the CTS would have been nice. Voltec on a new platform (D2XX) that will allow for under-floor mounting of the battery would be even better.

I actually own a 2013 volt in Canada. It took four months to order a customized volt from the factory so I would say that delay isn't helping them. There's also the fact that the sales person wasn't the most knowledgeable about it. He admitted that most owners know more about the car than he did. Then there's the fact that most people don't like a high tech car so it only really works for some of us.

The Telsa is a nice car but I doubt it'll work for some of us in very cold climates. Gas is useful for that. The even longer wait / order time and amazingly high cost will likely scare folks away.

Overall, no regrets. Electric is definitely fun. There's massive amount of torque off the line that only an electric can pull off which lets you pass slower cars without anyone noticing until you're very far away. :) I also had some overweight friends (400lb) ride in my car and you don't even notice the extra weight. Brakes on the other hand. XD

Drive it in Sport/Low all the time, that improves the brake feel quite a bit IMO.

I reckon public charging infrastructure in Canada could be easier to come across since electric sockets for block heaters can be repurposed to run 120V chargers, as long as you have a way to lock the EVSE..

I think that gm has cut advertising on the volt in pref to Cadillac . When spring comes and ads increase the volt should sell. If you want to go from Chicago to Denver you need a volt. I average 90 mpg for 4500 mi in 10-30 degree weather.!
