Fujitsu slams Tellabs with optical technology patent infringement suits
Fujitsu is well known for producing all types of hardware from storage products to laptops and servers, and even point-of-sale equipment. Fujitsu is also highly involved in the research and development of networking equipment such as optical transport systems and network management hardware for enterprise applications.
Recently, Fujitsu followed through with a patent infringement lawsuit against Tellabs Operations, Inc. The suit alleges Tellabs infringed on four Fujitsu patents covering optical communication technologies. According to the press release, Fujitsu seeks monetary damages and an injunction against
Tellabs' future infringement of Fujitsu's patents.
The supposed infringing products include the Tellabs 7100 Optical Transport System, Tellabs 5500 series digital cross-connect hardware, and Tellabs 6300
series network management hardware, all of which feature support for optical communication.
Fujitsu claims it has tried to come to some agreement with Tellabs outside of the court setting numerous times but an agreement could not be reached which resulted in the lawsuit, according to the official press release.
According to Masanobu Katoh,
corporate vice president and president of the Law & Intellectual
Property Unit of Fujitsu Limited, "Fujitsu has been investing heavily for years in research and
development and owns approximately 10,000 patents in the field of
optical communications around the world." Katoh goes on to say "We consider our intellectual property to be valuable company assets and are committed to protecting and
enforcing them."
Fujitsu's last patent infringement case ended in favor of the company against the Taiwanese semiconductor manufacturer Nanya Technology Corp. The Tokyo District Court granted Fujitsu an injunction against all future sales and imports of Nanya products infringing on Fujitsu patents as well as full compensation for infringements in the past. Fujitsu is looking for a similar outcome in the case against Tellabs.
